Earlier in the week I had bid and LOST on this pattern. I uploaded the pic to my own space because I have to have it.
http://www.yarnicopia.com/images/circlecoat.jpg

Has anyone seen this before or can possibly point me in the right direction as to who published it?

I am in love with this coat!

Oh!
I think I saw something very similar to that....
I was looking at crochet books in Barnes & Noble this weekend and I could swear one of them had a coat like that. Probably not exactly the same but it had a circle thingie in the middle of the back. I'm trying to think what book it was in... <code>:thinking2</code>

I can't be sure, but maybe it was Hip to Crochet or the Family Circle Easy Crochet (with the girl in the floppy hat on the cover)
I know I flipped through both of those but it could have been something else. Drat this spotty memory lol!

I bet that would be so easy to make yourself. Here I go again with looking at a picture and thinking how easy it would be to make a pattern from it lol. But if you made a large circle using the crochet in the round technique using your own stitch pattern, you would leave a spot for the arm holes at some point, then keep crocheting around that - then add the sleeves on after.

Hmmmm wonder if I could come up with something maybe in a smaller size as a guide?

Ah ha!
The pattern I saw was in Hip to Crochet. I went to Joann's this afternoon & they had it there. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" />

That's the good news.

The bad-ish news was it wasn't really the same thing. It *was* a sweater/coat and it did have a big motif in the back. The motif was totally different, kind of a floral looking thing, and the "fabric" of the rest of it was more solid than this one. But it's worth a look, I bet using that as a guideline you could futz around with the stitches enough to get something you'd be happy with. Also from the peek I took today, it looked like the motif was made seperately from the other parts of the coat so you could really use any motif as long as it ends up the right size.

Im making my version of this coat (without the pattern) for my 6 year old :D I started it yesterday, have a couple more rounds to go then to add the sleeves. This one is my rough draft design - then I will modify it when I make one for my niece. This is just turning out to be the cutest little coat!

yarnicopia, I have a copy of a free pattern that was offered at <a href="http://www.cherryyarn.com" target="_new">Cherry Tree Hill Yarns</a> a few years back and it looks very similar. You can see a <a href="http://www.handpaintheaven.com/ribbonin.html" target="_new">photo</a> of it here.

There's also a free pattern over at <a href="http://forums.about.com/ab-crochet/messages?msg=2497.1" target="_new">another message board</a><img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cutewink.gif" /> that is also quite similar. (Pictures are here (http://forums.about.com/ab-crochet/messages?msg=1942.1))

MommaChelle, I can't wait to see your version!<img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif" />

Thank you so much for posting that...those 2 variations are absolutely stunning! I like the one from Cherry tree better because it looks like it's worked in the round which is what attracted me to the whole thing in the first place.

Thank you again very much for posting this.

It finally came to me, just what this pattern is called. It is a Cocoon. In searching for a pattern, what I found was a schematic for one. If you can work from a schematic, than you can do any stitch you want.

www.stephthornton.co.uk/k...cocoon.htm (http://www.stephthornton.co.uk/knitting/bond/list/cocoon.htm)

I've made a couple of these in knit and have the directions for it in knitting. But it would be easier to work to the schematic than to try and convert the instructions.

Here's what I would do:
1. make a circle big enough so that when it is folded in half it goes from your shoulder line to below your tush.

2. where the front meets the back, when folded, sew the front and back together. That makes the armhole.

Now, if you grab it in the center of one half and let the piece drop open, you will see that you have a place to put your arms; the top piece will fold over around your neck to form a collar.

3. you can then pick up stitches around the arm opening to make a sleeve.

But the picture you showed appears to be loosely done double or triple crochet which makes the open weave. If you work loose enough you make not need to do much to finish off the sleeve. The ones I made in knit, I did not add anything to the sleeve length. They end around the elbow.

Good luck in your hunt.

I think I see what it's saying (the website with the rectangle photo) but I dont believe this circle coat is made that way. You actually make a large circle with holes for the sleeves when you get to the arm section of your circle. The circle is started in the center of your back and keeps going around and around. I took photos of my 4 year old wearing the one I made before adding on the sleeves and I will post them soon. I am about finished with the first sleeve. This coat is my rough design and I will modify better when I make the next one - I just wanted to be sure I had the circle coat idea correct while making this one.

Chelle, I can not even believe you are doing this woman! You have such ambition:bow I bow to thee. I can not wait to see this trial run you are doing. Can you take pictures now and give us a sneak peek? So we can see how it looks before assembly? Like a step by step photo guide...lol
I don't ask for much do I? :)

Alright! Are you ready for this? I've finished the first sleeve and have decided that Im going to do either a white sc or soft white sc around the coat and the sleeve, then do a reverse sc in raspberry (which is the color of the coat) over the white.

I used an N hook and RH Super Saver in Raspberry, I think with a smaller hook it will look a little nicer.

This is the photo I took with my 4 yr old this afternoon while my 6 yr old was in school. Before adding the sleeves:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/circlecoat1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/circlecoat2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/circlecoat3.jpg

And taken just now after I finished the sleeves, is on my 6 yr old.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/circlecoat4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/circlecoat5.jpg

I really like the ruffled look it has on the edges. The ruffled part can easily be taken out but I increased a lot on one round which is why it has the ruffled look. I am going to put buttons at the point where I overlapped the front. I didnt add more to the circle because I thought it was long enough in the back and I like the open part in the front :D

Awww thanks! My girls really like the coat - they seem to really enjoy the fact that I made them something, so I dont think it matters what it is! LOL. My girls are very sweet and they will let me know when they dont like something by saying "umm mommy, I dont really like this" but that hasnt happened yet on a crochet item.

OMgoodness! That coat turned out sooooo sweet!
You did a fantastic job! I am still a little confused at how the sleeve holes are formed. Is there any way you can lay that coat open on the floor and snap another pic?
I really want to give this a try this weekend while I have a few days off starting tomorrow.
You truly are amazing!
I ended up going to bed early last night so I missed this post until this morning. I searched half the night on the internet for a pattern similiar to this.
I am really very proud that you came up with this.

Your design is awesome! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/ura1.gif" /> If you write a pattern, please let me know! The pictures are great and the ruffles make the coat. The style is very versatile--hip for us 20+ somethings as well as being cute enough for 1st grade.

:blush I love working out new patterns. I am going to make another one for my niece in navy blue soon and I will take extra photos of that one for the pattern as I work on it so shaping the arm holes and such can be seen from the pictures. I am almost finished with the second sleeve of this one, just doing the ruffled cuff now, then I will border it all in white and reverse sc in raspberry - then sew on the buttons. I should have it finished by this evening and I will take a cutie picture of it on one of my children :) I would say this coat is a size 4-5 but hopefully I will be able to write the pattern out so that you make it by measurements not by rounds.

I put the completed (for the most part) picture of the jacket up in the current projects forum. All that is left is the button, but I put a little tie where the button is going for the pictures. Im already working on my next one for my other dd - this is the one I will write the directions out for and will note how I size it for her.

Ok I found this coat pattern being sold on ebay again Ro but I'm not so sure that I would buy from them...they have a couple patterns being sold that are free on the internet and a couple patterns that are in current magazines being sold as well. I'm thinking this seller should be turned in to ebay for copyright infringement....I'm seeing SO much of this lately it's not funny. Makes me wonder if that coat pattern could possibly be found free on the internet somewhere.

Here's the coat pattern...click seller's other items to see if they are familiar to you as well. The one capelet poncho pattern they have for sale is one that I just recently made from a current knitting/crochet magazine.

When I came across the checkerboard afghan pattern being sold on ebay when I just found it being offered free online, I told my friend about it because they were also selling one of her old patterns. She told me that if they are literally ripping out the magazine/book pages and selling them then that is ok for them to do- but if they are making copies of the patterns that it is not ok to sell them that way.

becjac67
September 6th, 2004, 03:18 PM
Wow I certainly didnt know that but I wonder if this is the same seller that Ro saw the first time and if she's indeed tearing them out of magazines or making copies. Wish I knew what magazine that coat came out of.

Becky,
It most definately is the same seller. I had her in my bookmarks. Her list of patterns for sale are all the same from over a week ago when I saw that coat originally. She just appears to be relisting them. So perhaps they are copies. I had originally emailed the owner after I lost the bid to see if she would mind sharing with me the source for that pattern so I can track it down on my own. And she never replied..so that ****** me off a little bit and now I won't buy that pattern from her no matter how badly I wanted it.
I did also notice that some of those patterns were actually from recent magazines that I PAY for.
That really ticks me.

I kinda had a feeling that they were copies since those patterns from a recent magazine were in there. That just sucks that people are profiting off of others like that. I would love to have that pattern as well but no way I'll get it from that seller. I'm determined to find SOMEthing like that if not the exact one (or maybe even come up with something myself sometime) and Chelle's pattern for kids is great so to heck with that seller LOL.

I don't know if you ever wound up buying this or not, but I have it! I have a copy of it given to me by my aunt and, if it is ok (I don't know what the rules are on photocopying), I'd be more than happy to pass it on to you - mail would be best, probably. I'm so sorry I didn't see your post sooner! But I do have the pattern, and another very similar to it from the same book. Let me know.
