I ran across this group the other day called Operation Gratitude.

It's all about supporting our troups overseas. I don't know how anyone feels about the war (I'm not very happy about it myself) but I worry about our young people over there. Personally, I feel I can support the troops without being in favor of the war... anyhow.....

They are collecting scaves right now to send to the troops. They will take knitted or crocheted scarves (although the site only mentions knit). I've been in contact with the organizer of the scarf drive and she gave responded with this information.

Thank you so much for your interest in sending our troops some nice warm scarves this winter! Here's some suggestions for the dimensions: We're keeping them nice and simple. It's just a straight across knit or crochet with no complications---about 5-6" across and about 38-42" long is fine---and any fiber is fine too. We're not picky at all!

Thicker yarn and bigger needles will allow you to knit faster, but any size is okay---whatever you'd like. As for colors, I think we will have a variety to send them (and any color is welcome), but if you have a choice take the more masculine colors, since most of the receivers will be males!

And please help spread the word about this wonderful project to anyone who is interested. We started loading boxes for Operation Gratitude this past weekend and will continue through December. If you'd like, put a note on
each scarf with your name and address.

I am a Supervisor for Operation Gratitude and am also knitting scarves!
Thanks again for your kindness in helping to put a smile on the faces of our soldiers this winter!!!

Sincerely,

Sharon Howard

I think they're taking them until December 15th.

Here's the main website for more information. (The scarves are listed on the "wish list" page)

I'd love it anyone else would care to join me in this cause. :)

I wonder if they would like some Izzy dolls too?

The page for the dolls is challenging to navigate

I will try to get some scarves done. so a pattern would not go over well huh. Ok, I can just knit if I have to :D

I'm probably going to use this pattern:

http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=19076&highlight=unnamed+scarf

it works up pretty fast and looks good made all in one color or in two colors.

I agree that regardless of our stance on the war, we can support the individuals who are serving there. Count me in as well.

Are these being sent to soldiers in forward areas or to men /women stationed overseas?

Since this is an older post I hope that it isn't in poor taste to say that we're (mostly knit1crochet2 for getting it off the ground) will be doing a Support our Sick/Wounded Troops project.
The thread can be found here:

I've started a CAL specifically for those of us sending to the incredibly War Wounded. That post can be found here: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?p=659013#post659013

I'm in. I can make some.
So do we have til Dec. 15th then to send them in?
I most certainly want to support our troops even if I don't agree with the War.

From the Operation Gratitude wishlist site:

Operation Gratitude ACCEPTS DELIVERY OF ITEMS DURING THE FOLLOWING TIMES ONLY:
OCTOBER 1-DECEMBER 15 for the Holiday Drive
APRIL 15-JUNE 15 for the Patriotic Drive

http://www.opgratitude.com/wishlist.php

So crochet away.. but hold them at home until Oct. 2007. You may want to email the person listed on the webpage for more information. (It's listed as Knit Scarves, but they'll take crochet too. I've gently asked once to have that changed to knit and/or crochet.. and I won't ask again. I'm a big girl and can handle it. :D )

Thanks so much for contributing!!

I believe these are being sent to soldiers/sailors/airmen(women)/marines overseas and/or in forward areas, but I don't know the details.

You might find that information by emailing the coordinator of Operation Gratitude.

You might also check out the mail call section and read some of the notes from the soldiers who have received the "care" packages.

I think your fisher house drive is a wonderful thing.. and I commend you for it. The operation gratitude scarf drive is pretty much a seasonal thing (see my previous post).

Thanks for your interest.
