View Full Version : Looking For A Hat Pattern

Many years ago I saw a woman wearing a hat. It was what you call a watch cap. It had been crocheted in the ripple stitch. It ended in the points. I had no other band. Then you just folded back the bottom section with the points. It so intrigued me, that I stopped her to ask where she got the pattern. It was something she had purchased at a craft fair, so she had no idea.
I have never forgotten that hat. I looked and looked, but cannot find a pattern for this. Does anyone here know where I might find it?

You might want to surf a bit at Rachel's site.
<a href="http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com" target="_new">Crochet Pattern Central</a> I always find LOTS of fun things there. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" />
Good luck on your search.
[sounds like a really great hat!]

hmmmm.... i'm intrigued now, too :bounce
i have seen several things surfing around called 'watch hats' but nothing like you describe... maybe i'm not understanding the description very well :thinking1

It's just the regular pull on cap. The term "watch cap" comes from the Navy. Old habit, as my DH was in the Navy for many years. They had navy blue woolen caps that they would pull on when they stood watch on deck at night.
The pattern of the one I'm looking for is done in the ripple stitch. I have seen caps done with the ripple, but they all ended with rows of single or double crochet to form a band. This one just continues in ripple. When it's long enough, you just stop. It would look kind of like of tube with the points facing down. You'd just turn up the cuff and the points would then be all around the crown of the hat.

ahhh, i see now. hmmm... i don't remember seeing anything like that around.... have you searched rachel's pages?
if you have the gumption to try and figure something out for yourself, you might be able to use the ripple socks as a guide for how to increase in ripple??? maybe?:thinking1
(check out the first page of "feet need socks cal" for the sock link)

I checked crochetcentral. It's a great site. But doesn't have what I was looking for. But that is a great suggestion. I never would have thought to convert of sock! :D

Teri,
I made 5 of the hats you talk about last Christmas. The first one I saw a girl was wearing it at Wal-mart. I loved it when I saw it. I tried to find it on the boards with no luck. Then one day I was going through my Workbasket mags. there it was. I was so happy. E-mail me and I will scan my hat to make sure it is the one that you want. Then I will go through my mags and find the pattern again.
Happy crocheting,
Lynda

This is going to sound kind of silly, but as I was reading this thread, I started thinking about this baby afghan. It seems like you could adapt the pattern to work for a hat, too. It is the <a href="http://*****************/web/20021003082720/http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/angelcrafts/roundripple.html" target="_new">round ripple baby afghan</a>; I'm not sure how you could go about it, but it is increasing the ripples with each round, same as a hat would be. Just a thought. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/scratchchin.gif" />

Several months ago I inquired about this same hat over at the livejournal crochet board. I had clipped a picture of it off the internet just so I can try to inspire myself to someday try it out. I would love to find a pattern somewhere for it or give it a try by myself...just haven't had the nerve.
Here is that pic: I hope it is ok to post it here if not....sould one of the moderaters remove it....no problem
Thanks for asking this question maybe together we can figure it out.

That picture is the closest I have seen. The only difference would be that the entire hat is done in ripple. The one in the picture appears to have a plain crown.
When it comes to crochet, I am strictly a follow-the-pattern kind of gal. I have no ability to concoct or devise on my own.

Teri, Here are some pictures of a ripple hat I just finished. I think if you delete the last 3 rows af the pattern and continue the ripple pattern, it will give you what you are looking for. http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v298/myprojects1/ripplle_hat-top.jpg
Here is the link to the pattern. You mey have to sign up at this website to see the pattern. Not sure how it works.

Hope this helps,

Hello,
I went through my Workbasket magazines today and found that I had improvised with the hat pattern. The pattern that I used, and made up, goes as follows;
Ripple Cap
Yarn 4-ply worsted weight, three colors of your chose
Hook size H
Ch 98, ( I don't remember if this is the right count it could be a little long and you will have to undo the chain from the back if it is. I did count the chains on the hat and I added two for the first stitch)
Working form the bottom up
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 4 ch, *3 sc in next ch, sc in each of next 5 ch, draw up a lp in next ch, sk 1 ch, draw up a lp in next ch, yo and through 3 lps, sc in each of next 5 ch, repeat from * 5 times, 3 sc in next ch, sc in each of next 5 ch, ch 1 turn.
Row 2: Working stitches in back loop. Draw up a lp in each of next 2 sts, yo and through 3 lps, sc in each of next 4 sts, *3 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, draw up a lp in next st, sk ` st, draw up a lp in next st, yo and though 3 lps, sc in next 5 sts, repeat from * 5 times, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, draw up a lp in next 2 sts, yo and through 3 lps, ch 1, turn. Repeat row 2 for ripple pattern until 32 rows have been crocheted. (If you do not want a brim to roll up I would do 28 rows.)
Stripe Pattern: Continuing in ripple pattern work
4 rows color a, 4 rows color B, and 4 rows color C.
4 rows A again, 3 rows B, 4 rows C.
2 rows A, 2 rows B, 2 rows C.
1 row A, 1 row B, 1 row C.
Finishing: Sew ends of rows together. Fold each point at center top, pull yarn through center st of each point, and draw together tightly. Pull through same sts again, draw together and secure end. Then sew each point of star together.
When working on this it hat it looks like a little ripple afghan, it all comes together when it is sewn together. I do have the picture that I scanned, however I did not figure out how to post it on the board. So please e-mail me and I will get that picture to you.

You are all welcome. I love to share.
I did the other hats in different colors, one in browns and tans, and one all white.
I even did different strip patterns. The sky is the limit.

You should check out YARNCAT 'S SITE, she has a hat called the newsboy cap that I think is what you may be referring to.
