The Yarn Standards website features a chart that shows categories of yarn weights, suggested crochet hook and knitting needle sizes, and gauge ranges on this page of their site (http://www.yarnstandards.com/weight.html).

Can you but this chart somewhere? Preferbly made of plastic as it would be a real handy reference guide.

I don't know of anywhere you can purchase a plastic version, but you could print it out and take it to your local office supply store or Kinko's and ask them to laminate it for you. It shouldn't cost more than $1-$2 to have it laminated, even with the thick kind of lamination.

I think www.lionbrand.com has a similar page on their site

Now if the yarn manufacturers would actually pay attention to this that would be great! Too many companies seem to assign weight designations randomly to their yarns (the Hobby Lobby store brand -- Yarn Bee? -- is especially bad). But, at least it's better than nothing.
Thanks for posting!

I´m not used to these names to describe yarn, so tahnk you :)
What is the yarn, which requires thinner hooks/needles than the "super fine yarn" on this page, called?

Ahhh this helps thanks. In Australia most of ours are labelled by ply, 4ply being a baby wool and 8 ply the standard with 12 ply the thicker one. Now I can hopefully convert to the correct yarn
