Football pattern?

Hi Everyone.

My bestfriend's son will be turning 2 in about a month. I'd really love to crochet him a football, baseball, soccer ball and basket ball. That kids is nuts for sports - even at this age. LOL.

So far I figure I can do the balls by just crocheting in the round and keep increasing till I get the size I want, then working the decreas. For the soccer ball I was thinking I could just do black and white octogon shapes, then put them all together.

The football's got me stumpted though. Anyone know of any patterns out there? If not if anyone has any ideas on how to do this I would appreciate it.
