I bought cotton yarn on sale and now I can't find the right pattern or stitch to use with it and need some ideas. I would like to make a long rectangular shawl, but I am also thinking about seraphina's shawl. links to the yarn and shawl pattern are below. any ideas would be very much appreciated.
thanks!

I just love this one:

But I'm not sure if the yarn you got would work with it. (I'm a total dummy when it comes to yarn!) :ohdear

I like Seraphina's, too, though. :bounce

That's my two cents, but choose whatever you like best!

I'm working on the Seraphina shawl now in a very slubby cotton/rayon yarn. I did a little test one using Aunt Lydia's Baby Denim cotton and it was perfect (now I want to do one just in that!) I'm giving the swatch one to my friends daughter to use w/ her American Girl Dolls.

It's a beautiful piece but I'll give you a heads up, the way the pattern is written is a little tricky. Keep a close eye on the pictures to make sure you are doing it correctly. Sometimes the writing doesn't match exactly what you need to do.
Once you get the base of it done and are in the 4 repeating sequences it goes very quickly. I can see myself making a lot of these for gifts.

Rachel:
I actually started making it in the pattern you mentioned. It's coming out pretty and lacy looking, but I keep on debating whether or not to frog it. Not sure if the design fits the color and texture of the yarn. :worried I might try to work a few more rows on it and post a photo tomorrow.

Yeah, I love the design, but the yarn always has to match or it won't look right.

Pictures would be nice...I always love pictures. :D

Holly, these are beautiful! I especially like the yellow one. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/yay.gif" /> Good job!

Tiff,
Yes, I did. I love it! I knew I saw it on someone's blog but I couldn't remember whose.

I'm using a J hook and it's coming out very open & lacy. It's a little hard to bend the slubs around a small hook but it's worth it. I bought two 8 oz skeins and I'll probably end up using almost all of it. I want it really long (I'm tall and :::ahem:::: wide) and I'll fringe it as well. The picture shows it with one full skein used.

It's hard to see the detail without making the picture huge.
If you want to see it close up here's a link to a full size picture

:woohoo Now I have an excuse to buy more of that beautiful yarn! :) I only bought one 8 oz skein because I didn't know how much I would love it.

My cat's named Buffy. She was trained to be a mosquito slayer but then we moved to the desert where mosquitoes don't roam. :)

Rachel:
Below is a picture of the fews rows made with the pattern you posted. It's pretty, but really doesn't go with the yarn. It would probably look better with a soft sportweight yarn.

HollyM:
Your shawls are lovely. I had printed out seraphina's pattern a while back and decided to try the pattern last night. It's perfect for the yarn, even with only 8 rows done it's very soft and drapey. I agree that the pattern is tricky to read. I was always surprised when the number of double crochets I did matched the pattern. If I had the time I'd rewrite the pattern. She seems to assume that you remember what you did on the last row. Those are things I tend to forget, especially on patterns that you have to follow closely.
