....sorry ladies... a little breakfast in bed with my new Country Cottage magazine... hubby took care of the animals and such so I was Queen Bee holding court from my throne :D

..so... a few basics here...
This will be done totally in sc... at the end of each row you will ch 1 turn... this always counts as the first stitch.....

If you have never changed color mid row... there are several onlline tutorials and we can also help you every step of the way ( I however will NOT fly to your home to give personal instruction unless your Ilene that lives all of a half hour away)....

....you may share this pattern with friends or if you have a bee in your bonnet to make a bunch and sell them that is fine, just give me the credit for the pattern AND you may not sell the pattern....( that part was for Amy:P )

..Here we go: with white....chain 53

.row 1: In 2nd chain from hook sc... sc across chain 1 turn
row 2-5: in second sc from hook sc and all the way across chain 1 at the end of each row and turn..
You will end up with 52 stitches in each row.... get there anyway you can
( how's that for pattern clarity)
My 2nd st or ch might be some one elses 1st or something... just make sure there are 52 sttiches when you finish the row....( clear as mud huh???)

...That's it... that's it for right now..... have a fine day... all day long!

I think I can handle this... so far :lol
Thanks, I can't wait to see it unfold as we go.

November 24, 2006, 12:17 PM
Okay, if I'm reading this correctly (and I'm probably not) we are decreasing one stitch in each row?

minwifeof4boys
November 24, 2006, 12:38 PM
Ummm... nope... does it read htat way??? I need to edit... evry row should have 52 sttiches.... If you count the chain one as a stitch then go into the 2nd stitch then you should just have 2 stitches, not decreased by one.....clear as mud huh??? Anyhow... how about if you have 52 stitches in a row your probably good... just make sure you are counting the chain one as your first stitch

I am off to get white yarn and I think I may have to get the variegated too that sounds soo pretty. Let me understand this though. You use the variegated instead of the red and green? So it's white and variegated instead of white, red and green. Just wanna make sure. LOL.

November 24, 2006, 02:03 PM
What weight yarn? WW?

I'm using WW, but I htink others are trying thread... either will work, just adjust your hook....

...with WW I am using a G....but it depends how big/ small you want a piece...there is alot of artistic license with this piece...

Have fun!!

sesnsew...I just did a test graph on the varigated...it won't work like I thought....stick with white as a base and green and red for the graph part....
off to edit ( again)

Just did my first 5 rows...c'mon tomorrow!!!

I'm so glad I bought a bright red and a forest green RHSS "just in case" I wanted to do some holiday-ey crocheting!

This is both my first mystery crochet-along AND my first graph - wish me luck!

Plus, it's a great way to get my mind off the million and one granny squares for the kids' afghans. I know it's a 'good thing', but I need a break sometimes, lol!

I'm in on this one again. I definately need the practice. :lol I've already done the first part and I'm itchin for the next part! Can't wait to see some color added to this.
I'm using Bernat Softee Chunky with a G hook for mine.

I think I realize what I did wrong last time, I started counted one on my first sc and didn't count the ch as the first st. Hopefully I will get it right this time. :D

I *think* I have it right. By my count I have 52 so I hope my count is the same as yours. :think This is my first graph too. I'm a little nervous about the color change thing but it will help me practice my color changing since I want to make an afghan with a bit of colors in it.

Darski your so funny... hehe

I think you all are just about ready for bed and Im going to have my afternoon cuppa and try and make a start on this mystery cal.

minwifeof4boys
November 25, 2006, 10:25 AM
OK... Day 2....

We're going to add color today ...the bulk of the project will be with green so what I would suggest is to take 2 small pieces of cardboard and wrap the color white around it... or you can make one cardboard "bobbin" and use your skein for the other side....I always make a notch in the top of the cardboard to hold the yarn in place when I am not using it ....If you want you can carry it across the back of your work....

Remember chain 1 counts as your first stitch.... here we go....

Row 6 with the white sc 13 but on the 13th stitch with the last two loops on the hook, add green... to do this you will use green to finish off the stitch leave a tail leave the white behind the work and begin crocheting with the green for 25 stitches ont he 25th stitich ( do not finish off green yarn, leave it behind the work)you will pick up the white again for 14 stitches.... chain 1 and turn...

...I find it helpful to take the tail of the new color and sort of crochet it into the row to avoid having to weave it in after the piece is finished....

If your frustrated stop and ask a question instead of giving up... there are tons of great minds to work throught his with you...

Row 7: with white sc 11 switch to green 30 sc switch to white 11 sc chain 1 turn

Row 8: white 10, green 32, white 10 chain 1 turn

Row 9: white 9 green 34 white 9 chain 1 turn

row 10: white 10 green 32 white 10 chain 1 turn

...That's it... that's it for right now.... have a fine day... all day long!

Well I've finished mine for today and everything is working up right. I have 52 stitches each time. The stitches come out correctly at the end of each row so far. :yay Last time I would finish the stitch and then pick up the new color, but this time I'm following your instruction and it's coming out good so far. But the yarns are a mess in the back :lol Before I stitched in the color I wasn't using to the end of the row and back again on the next row, but it would show through the stitches, so I like this better because I don't want the colors to show through.

minwifeof4boys
November 25, 2006, 11:46 AM
Good job!!! Dianna..... it will be a piece of cake for you now... Brandybuck... glad your joining us!!!

sewnsew
November 25, 2006, 12:40 PM
Ok I'm a little confused. When I change the yarn from white to green I don't finish the white but I also don't crochet over the white? Then do the same when I go back from green to white?

darski
November 25, 2006, 01:52 PM
I'm not sure what you are asking...
If you are asking about what to do with the yarn when you are not using it, you just let it lie and pick it up again when you get to it.

You should have two balls/bobbins/butterflies of white yarn and one Green ball at this point. the whites are on the outsides and the green is in the centre.

as you do your last white stitch (for example) you pull through a loop as you normally would then drop the white and pick up the green then draw through two loops on hook. that loop always lays over the top of the next stitch so it has to be the same colour.
If this is not what you meant... Nevermind! - Emily Litella rocked:2rock

November 25, 2006, 03:22 PM
I think the link confused me. LOL I was reading about crocheting over the yarn or carrying it over the back and I didn't know if that was what I was supposed to do. LOL I'm glad I got it figured out. Now that there is a little color I'm having fun trying to guess what I think it is.

Tiga
November 25, 2006, 08:33 PM
Okay, I'm crocheting *OVER* my white; what I'm doing it pulling all the yarn I'm crocheting over to what is my "backside" - when I pull up my two loop of green, I pull the white that I dropped between the two loops so on one row I'm actually crocheting over in the side of the work facing me (the backside). The next row, I just crochet over in the back, like normal.

Is this just too complicated? I didn't understand about having TWO balls of white. Should I just make another ball of white for tomorrow? How big should I make it? I'm using a RH Giant skein, so I've got plenty, I'm sure, lol!

Some of my white *is* showing through the green, but it's all on my designated wrong side - is that okay? On the front side, it's all purty.

Oh, and I think we're making a Christmas Viking boat. Yup. Christmas Vikings of Crochetville :grin

OK... dial up is giving me a headache so I need to be quick...

Rows 11-13 white 11 green 30 white 11 chain 1 and turn at the end of each row

Row 14: white 11 green 31 white 10 chain 1 turn

Row 15 white 9 RED 5 Green 26 Red 1 Green 1 white 10

( If you choose you can skip adding in the red and "other" things can be done later... if you don't do the red just use green for that stitch....

That's it...that's it for right now have a fine day... all day long!

AAAARRRGGHHH! :thair The one stitch color changes are making me crazy! I stopped at row 17 because of the "missing stitches" in 18, and I will wait patiently for the graph-guru to return and confirm...lol. Okay it looks like I'm going to have to print out the instructions here at work and take them home with me; my home computer is acting up! :( I'm thinking it's the power supply, but that's still going to be a pain to replace(it's christmas time, how much extra money can a body have? :D ) So hopefully I can catch up soon.

I stopped halfway through row 18 awaiting instructions too. I am having a hard time with the one stitches too. My problem is because that area of the row seems messy to me. We'll see when it's all done. I'm not sure I fully understand the bobbin thing either so I'm not going to explain it. LOL This is the first time I've done a project that requires changing colors throughout so as long as it resembles what it's supposed to I'll be happy. lol

I had the same problem. I did the last 10 white and still have 2 sts left. I've double counted and everything is correct. So I wasn't sure if there should be more red sts or more white sts. I'll wait till I hear from Lea before I continue.

I agree tlisley, this one st change can make you crazy! :loco :lol

Well Ilene had to get me in on this, and I've got all 20 rows done. Yes there is a mistake in row 18, short 2 stitches so i did 3 reds instead of one. If that isn't right I frog it and put the correction in when she gives it to us. Glad to be joining you all.

My area there looks very messy, too. I think I'm going to frog it, and try to "catch" the yarn that looks like it's going sort of sideways across the other stitches (when you pull it up from the previous row) and crochet over it, in the stitch I'm pulling it up in. If that makes an ounce of sense, lol!

Or, figure something out where it just looks messy on the wrong side. Right now, it's messy on both sides.

Can't mess around with it too much, though - on top of all the squares I'm doing, I've decided to try to make a BICO for my 4 year old.

Clearly, I'm insane.:confused :juggle

Just a heads up... I completed the final product minus some of the color changes I had originally done because I am going in a toatlly differnt direction with this... so... if you happen to be out and about pick up cool buttons, charms, weird beads etc.... so after the beagle viking ship is done we can decorate it... I used ribbons , a few buttons, and some bead sort of charm things that were like 2.00 a pack at Walmart... the effect is so totally cool you would not believe!!

....now... back to your regularly scheduled posts... I just had to share!

Dont worry , I tried it and you could see the green being carried on top of row thru the white . So I will just have to cover the back to hide the loops then , as I was thinking of using this as a pocket for a pillowghan , for a little one the might get his fingers caught in the loops .

November 28, 2006, 02:07 AM
ok , its me again , lol , I have read back thru all this and I missed the part about the 2 balls of white . Does it make 2 sides purty?By that I mean does that eliminate the loops of white at the back , cause if it does I am a frogging. rippit rippit rippit

darski
November 28, 2006, 02:15 AM
I just find it easier to have 2 balls of the white - one on each side- so I don't have to drag the colour across the whole thing.

Jjenjen
November 28, 2006, 02:19 AM
Darski , does this eliminate the loops across the back then?

Darski , does this eliminate the loops across the back then?

pretty well,

the back isn't quite as pretty, but there are no huge loops.

Thanks chenille , frogging right this minute , lol . I am determined to catch up right now .
OK , I frogged and started again with 2 balls of white . BUT , I seem to have a problem . One end on both sides of the piece is like the back should be , it must be something I am doing when taking up the green and changing back to white or something . Should I be twisting the 2 colours together when going from one to the other ? Is that a clear enough explanation?

Im up to day 6 and Im finding it really easy. Now and then Im short a stitch but thats because I seem to hide a stitch when I pick up a new color.

Lea you are very clever to have worked this graph out. I used to do cross stitch and never thought to combine the two. It surely cant be too hard.

What is everyone going to do with theirs once its finished.

A pillow sounds like a good thing to make it into. I almost bought some beads from Wal-Mart but I decided to wait. Then I was looking around my craft stuff for some beads for my little snowman and found some other beads that I had from awhile back that would look good on the tree. So I don't think I'll have to buy anything extra right now! :D

Thank you so much Lea for sharing the pattern. I've learned alot from doing these and I'm starting to love making them a lot. :manyheart I think I might try to come up with a snowman pattern sometime :hook

Hey, I didn't join this cal but had to do this anyways. It's been awfully fun. I actually did a half decent job on the color change. You know, it's funny, but I've been crocheting since I was 6 years old ( almost 13 years now), and I never did a whole lot of color changing projects( unless it was super easy), I was actually afraid of doing it. Changaphobia.
Anyways, thanks again. I started yesterday, and I shall finish tonight. It's a nice looking tree. Yeehaw.

God Bless!!!

Here is my finished tree:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/Alneget/Crochet%20Photos/Christmas-tree.jpg

I'll be using it as a door hanging on my front door, until we get the jingle bell wreath down from the attic.

I'm going to crochet in a "handle" for hanging.

Here's a close up of the tree's decorations:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/Alneget/Crochet%20Photos/close-up-of-tree.jpg

I used pony beads as I crocheted, and added the tiny jingle bells in the red ornament areas and the baby rickrack after. Those, and the angel iron on patch are all sewed on with thread - I hope they don't fall off!

everyones trees look really nice. I plan to finish mine today then decorate it. I am also thinking about making it into a pillow. I was thinking about crocheting a ruffle around it with christmas vaigated yarn (which I am doing the back in). I'm not exactly sure how to do this. I was thinking if I sc the two sides together that would give me the start on the ruffle. Am I thinking in the right direction here?
