If you have LOTS of time on your hands ;) you can browse through these:

www.crochetpatterncentral...purses.php (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/bags_totes_purses.php)

(I know there are some smaller, easy patterns among them.)

I'm sorry to say I don't have much time at the moment, so I'll let the other ladies suggest specific patterns. :rock

I'm making Lion Brand's Chenille Shoulder Bag
Chenille Shoulder Bag (http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/lionbrand/index.fcgi?page=http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/cchs-bag.html)
Rachel has a link on her site for it too.
It's been pretty easy ... you can see what I have done so far on it here: My Blog (http://kariholtz.blogspot.com)

A really easy pattern is to crochet a block twice as long as you want your purse. When it's about the height you'd like, crochet halfway across and just keep crocheting on that part to create a flap. Your work should look something like this:

-------
| |
| |------
| |
| |
| |
-------------- (Okay, it's a crummy picture, but you get the idea.)

Next, fold it in half widthwise. Then just whipstitch from the bottom of the flap down the the end of the purse and turn it right side out. Add a button and a little loop, and a handle, and voila! You're done! Another perk to this kind of purse is that it's really easy to sew a lining for. Just cut some cloth in the shape above, stitch it up and sew it in.

Rachel I like Ashleys bag on that list you gave me, but it says to work in rounds, but it looks more like rows, why is that?

Hi,

I have no idea! Remember that I just find patterns and link to them...which means I have seen THOUSANDS ;) of patterns... I can't keep track of every one of them. Is this the one you're talking about:

www.marloscrochetcorner.c...Purse.html (http://www.marloscrochetcorner.com/Ashley's%20Chic%20Purse.html)

I'm not very good with following patterns :huh

You can e-mail Marlo and ask her...or somebody on this board may know. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. It looks so simple, I'm going like this: :oops Why can't I understand it!

Stormy,
It looks to me that it is working in ovals. You make your chain, you do your first row stitches on one side of the chain and then go back down the other side of the original chain (not the new stitches you just did). You build your rows going round & round from there. The bag ends up seamless.

Did that make any sense? <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/scratchhead.gif" />
It is really easy though. Grab some scrap yarn, chain 15 or so just to work through it. I do that a lot when I'm not sure I understand a concept. I'll use some cheap but easy to see acrylic and do a few segments of the pattern to see if I can do it. That way I don't mess up my good yarn.

I tried to find a picture of the start of an oval, didn't have any luck. Sorry!

Hi, I am looking for a cowboy hat towel holder pattern. I have the cowboy boot potholder pattern, but I have a request for a cowboy hat towel holder to go with the boot. Can anyone help? If it is a published pattern, let me know where to buy it. I hope someone can help. I'm just not good at creating patterns out of the blue!

I think the easiest purse is an envelope purse. You just crochet a rectangle, bring the bottom up 2/3's of the way, sew 2 side seams. The other 1/3 becomes a flap. Then, you'll need some sort of handle unless you want it as a clutch. The simplest handle is just a chain as long as you want the handle, then either slip stitch or single crochet into each chain, and sew to either side of the bag.

Here a lots of patterns to get you started if you're more comfortable working from a written pattern:
