View Full Version : Comfortghan for 12 yr old girl whose gramma passed

Hi Villagers.
I've never asked for a comfortghan before but I am now. I'll explain.
My younger daughter is Tara and her closest friend is Maggie - they have been friends since before they were born (her mom and me were pregnant together and they live across the street)
Yesterday (November 26th) Maggie's grandmother died after complications from pneumonia brought on by a weakened immune system from a kidney transplant four years ago. Maggie has never lost anyone close to her and had a close relationship with her grandparents on both sides and has a lovely extended family who are grieving right now.
I told Tara and Maggie to come over to our house and I held Maggie and cried with her while we talked about her gramma and she said she should have visited her more - all the guilt things - and I told her her grandma knew how much she loved her but I knew that was of little consolation. I asked her what might make her feel better (ice cream?) and she said, "One of your afghans to keep me warm." - no one in her family is crafty or sews - they are all really into sports, especially professional hockey. Maggie said she and her grandma used to enjoy watching the California hockey team The Kings play on TV and sometimes going to home games.
So here's the request: The Kings colors are purple and black and I'd like to make Maggie an afghan of eight-inch squares, six squares by eight squares, 48 total. Any yarn would be fine, Fun Fur, scraps, whatever. She's a fun and funky almost teen and I know she'd love something wacky, that's why I'm not suggesting any specific square to use or yarn to use, just black and purple. If you want to edge them in black SS yarn so I can connect them easily, that would be great - otherwise I'll put the edging on if you don't have any.
Here is a link to one of their jerseys to see the color:
http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/3/32/180px-Kings20033rdjersey.gif
I appreciate anyone that can help as it would mean a lot to be able to offer something of comfort that would remind her of her grandma and also let her know how loved she is.
Thank you:manyheart

It was wonderful to get home and see more offers for squares - I've PM'd each of you with the addy and am so grateful for the generosity of the fellow Villagers, especially knowing everyone is so busy with holiday projects and just life in general. You all are so wonderful.... now off to the shower and back to making squares!:hook

If you can use some more squares, PM me your address and I'll get some out. I have some purple, though probably not the same shade, if thats ok? I also think varying shades would be cool, but let me know what you think!
Big :hug to Maggie!

OH thank you all so much! You're all so wonderful! Maggie is over now and her and Tara are helping each other figure out what to wear to the funeral on Friday. It will be cool (California cool - we're wimpy here! Could drop below 50 degrees)
They are happy and it's wonderful to see them smiling. They want me to take pictures of them so I'm off to play photographer and crochet some more!

Well, a little calmer now... the girls were having a blast which was really nice.
I showed Maggie Crochetville and told her how the Villagers were making squares for her afghan and she said, "I feel so loved!"... it really made her happy!
Her and Tara were having fun with the digital camera and took about 100 pics (okay, maybe I'm exagerating... they probably only took 96) but here's a really sweet one that I wanted to share: (Maggie on the left, Tara on the right)

Well, just got back from the funeral service and it really was a lovely remembrance of Ms. Gonzalez's life... Her children were quite stoic (they are in their 40's) and it was amusing when her daughter got up to do a eulogy and went to refer to her notes only to find that she had a Costco grocery list with her! She said, "Thanks, Mom!" and everyone was able to laugh.
Maggie seemed to have a tough time of it - just sorta overwhelmed by the ceremony of it all, being a Catholic funeral it can be somewhat intimidating.
And what to my wondering eyes did appear (in the mail) when I got home? Two BEAUTIFUL squares for Maggie's comfortghan from Chriscrochetcrazy! I'm talking some excellent work here - absolutely stunning!
Thank you so much, Chriscrochetcrazy, for your generosity! What a lovely gesture and the timing is impecable...
Also I debuted my Butterfly Shawl at the service (I worked hard to finish it last night). You can see it in the Butterfly Shawl Crochet Along, one of the last posts.
Here's a big Hug:hug and Love:manyheart to my wonderful Crochetville family!

Paulette,
I just finished my fourth square! I plan to post a pic in show and tell since its my first attempt at bullion crochet. My problem is that I've used Caron's wintuk, simply soft, and TLC's Heater purple. Are these going to work with what you have coming in and what your intending to use?:think let me know as I intend to get them in the mail tomorrow if they will work!

I am certain that whatever shade, texture or size you used will work... I'm grabbing everything purple and/or black so this is going to be a "purple and black stew" afghan!:lol Maggie is 12 and she'll love it.
I had mentioned earlier in the thread but I'll mention again, when I told her what you all were doing she just cried it made her so happy. I just don't see her scrutinizing it and saying, "You know, that bullion stitch isn't quite up to par!":lol

Hmmm, how did I miss this thread? I love making 8-inch squares for comfortghans because they get doen much faster then 12-inch ones. :) My heart goes out to Maggie; it must be so difficult to be at that age and lose such a source of love and comfort as a beloved grandma.
Paulette, I'll PM you to see if you need more squares. I have to go yarn shopping today anyway (like I need a reason....right).
Questions:
*Does the black edging go OUTSIDE the already 8-inch square, or is it 8 inches INCLUDING the black edging? Am I being too, well...you know what? Wait, don't answer that last one.
*I saw in the uniform that there is some grey, too. Are you using any grey?

You poor, over-extended thing, you! My goodness but you are busy:eek ...
And you reminded me of a X-mas crunch from long ago... My first-born was in kindergarten (he's 24 now... or 23, I forget) but I was room-mom and soccer mom and all that good stuff... also had 1-yr-old Ah Leah to care for... and things were going swimmingly until I contracted CHICKEN POX in the first week of December.
I was going to teach a group of room-moms to make little plastic canvas ornaments for their classes (five classes of 30) but being contagious I had to do them myself.
I also missed the end-of-season soccer party, the classroom Christmas party, the cute little Christmas performance...:( ... but I did manage to make a few hundred heart ornaments while I was lying in bed nearly dying from chicken pox... chicken pox is not pleasant to have :no as an adult and I would strongly recommend avoiding it if at all possible

Paulette, three squares will head out for their long journey to the West Coast tomorrow (I've been watching too many nature shows :lol).
One of them might be a little too lacy for this afghan, but hopefully the other two are okay. It was my first time with TLC Amore, so I didn't know what kind of pattern would work...I guess it wasn't the brightest thing to do to try a new yarn for someone else's comfortghan. :blush

MAIL CALL! Three more lovely squares form Sakurasaku! Thank you SO much for the beautiful squares! I never knew how many lovely shades of purple there were and I must say this is going to be a beautiful comfortghan! I've started laying the squares besides each other to get an idea how it's going to look and it is definitley 'more than the sum of its parts'... Simply amazing, the talent and generosity of Crochetville members!
I'm at 40 right now:cheer and having gotten bored with the 'regular' pattern I was making I started trying 'fancy' patterns which are more time consuming but keeping me "at the hook":lol . Last night, and into today, it is a popcorn stitch thing... very interesting...

Wow! 40! That's a lot of love out there! I think it would be fun to take turns getting a comfortghan. People (whoever wants to) send you a square or two, then you have to sew them together, and then you'd have a love blanket from your crochet friends all over the world. Can I go first? Huh? Huh? Can I? I want PINK!!! Then when mine's made, someone else would say what color they want, and we'd all send her some squares.... and so on.... might take a while, but eventually a lot of us would have comfortghans made with the loving hands of our friends here on the ville! What do ya'll think? Is it a dumb idea? Should it just be reserved for the people who especially need comforting? Like loss of a loved one, illness, etc....

OH, dear, I hope they aren't lost... I'm sure they're on the way and perhaps slowed up by all that pesky Christmas stuff:lol being mailed. Ankey, I hope I didn't mistake your squares for somebody else's - I've PM'd everyone as their squares arrived and a couple I had to do some detective work because I didn't know "real" names, only Crochetville names, but I narrowed them down by the city and state they'd come from. I'll keep watching for yours:manyheart
I sent poor DH to the post office the other day to mail out some work-related things and also slid in a couple Crochetville mailings (hey, why not:think ) and he said it was packed! And boy was the holiday spirit in full swing - people honking in the parking lot, cussing in line... yep, the holiday spirit was alive and well in Los Angeles post offices!:lol Hubby is pretty calm tempered so he just amused himself watching the idiocy of the people that just don't get it: the only thing that moves as one gets more and more frustrated waiting in a line is the blood pressure raising!

Paulette,
Thats an amazing number of squares! Wow! Anyway, no pressure here(lol), but you can be rest assured that we're all on the edge of our seats waiting to see pictures! Even just the four I made showed differences in the shades of purple. The Circle of Friends block took on a blue hue when placed next to the others. This is going to be a wonderful afghan for Maggie. Has she seen all the different squares yet?(Inquiring mind/s want to know)

I think that's the same pattern I used for two of my squares! Isn't it a lovely pattern? They came out pretty good in TLC Amore, which I initially wasn't sure about because it's a "loopy" yarn. I am definitely keeping the pattern for future comfortghan squares.
I think TLC Amore "plum" will look almost grey next to other brighter purples. I never knew there were so many different shades of purple, and I can't wait for a picture of the finished 'ghan.

I am so much looking forward to being able to give this to her... actually I think I'll let Tara present it to her, them being best friends, 'cause she knows it's coming from all of us at Crochetville! Then I'll tell her mom about the 'Ville and I know she'll get all touched and mushy...:manyheart

That's interesting, Sennight. I hadn't thought of trying for any sort of symetry or pattern:lol ! I sorta let them land where they did and then if I saw two together that were too similar I moved them away from each other.
I had a bad experience with a blanket I crocheted for Ah Leah many many years ago (wonder what happened to that:think ) Anyway, it was one of those that you do in stripes (is that Mile a Minute?) so I did the strips in shades of blue going from light to dark... man - that thing came out Ug-Lee!

Yeah, is that completely unreasonable or what? I get the DAY of Christmas and the DAY of New Year off. I could try for vacation but don't have enough seniority to get these highly saught after days... maybe by the time I have GRANDKIDS I'll be able to take the time off.
And you'd think the criminals would take a little time off, too, but NOOOO! I've been working Compton Court for two days... don't know how many of you are familiar with the infamous "Compton" but it's sorta the 'birthplace' of west coast gangsta rap and basically what a pit! Today wasn't so bad but among yesterday's cases was a drive-by shooting (attempted murder with gang enhancements) and then we sent a guy to prison for eight years for forcible rape which I thought was WAY low! I was thinking more like 80 years, but whatever. After the first of the year my 'regular' judge will be back and we can get back to our usual silliness!
My only thought is that the purple and white angel one should go in the center
I think someone else had mentioned putting the pretty white one in the center - they look like angels! I just can't figure out what the center is of six by eight:think ! I also have one that says "Maggie 2006" and would like to put that in a prominent place... maybe they could be beside each other in almost the center:lol .
I had to pick all the squares up so everybody wouldn't be stepping on them :eek but I think I'm gonna go with the the random placement and try not to have any two that are too similar near each other...:yes

You could use the two extra squares to make her a small tote bag. That way she'll be carrying everyones love with her all the time. That's what I'd do with the extras. Or a small pillow she could put on her bed to match the afghan. I think I like that better.

Just finished getting all the squares put together... came out really nice! I will be putting a border around it - I have a book of "beautiful edgings" so I'm going to find something that looks nice and not too complicated... this has taken me longer than expected - the getting them sewn together part - I guess because of the busy-ness of the holidays and also having my older daughter home from college and wanting to spend 'family time'.
I'll post a pic later, hopefully once I get the edging done, and then ya'all can pick out your squares that were so generously donated! And I promise when I present it to Maggie I will take many pictures and post those as well!
Again, thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and generosity!:hug

Tomorrow is Maggie's b-day so I'll give it to her tomorrow night. Her family is taking her to Disneyland and Tara is going along. I know for some people Disneyland is a vacation destination but living 45 minutes away the kids have been there quite a bit, but they still enjoy it!
So here's the blankie. I didn't get too fancy with the edge because, a) my fancy edge book was for thread edges - very complex, and b) I wanted to get this done! I hope everyone can find their squares - they all made it in! The ones I took out were duplicate ones I had made that weren't nearly so creative as what ya'all came up with.
Ta-dah!:cheer

Oh, thank you all so much! I was hoping I could do justice to the beautifully and lovingly made squares that were sent for this project! My daughter Tara was wrapping up in it and saying "make me one:( " ... so funny! She's really excited to be able to give it to Maggie (and of course I am too!) I have a blankie in the works for her - hideous shades of bright green that I got on sale at Michael's this weekend:eek ! She's gonna LOVE it!
I noticed that I have it upside down in the picture - the square that says Maggie 2006 is upside down, but I did put the angel square and the Maggie square 'staggered' in the center as suggested. It was really fun to put together - all the different yarns and textures and designs!
Truly a collective work of Crochetville love! And I promise to take lots of pictures when we give it to Maggie! :manyheart

Yes, it was oozing love, Shelle, which made putting it together rather challenging, having to clean up all the love ooze, but somehow I managed!:hook With hook in hand I trudged through.
I'd never heard that term either "gonna have puppies" but that's pretty cute! Looks like it may be tomorrow that I give it to her, since they're still gone at Disneyland, and I'm assuming they're gonna 'close the place down'. Actually haven't seen my daughter Tara in three days - I think she moved in across the street at Maggie's... I'll have to invite her home soon - maybe tomorrow I'll trick her into coming home by calling both girls over to give Maggie the afghan and then I'll block the door before Tara can leave again:devil .

Two things... no, three things:
1) I talked to Maggie's mom after they got back from Disneyland on the 3rd (Maggie's b-day) and mentioned I wanted to give her the afghan but it was pretty late (past 10:00 p.m.) and mom said, "Oh, she's so excited about it - she keeps telling me you're making her an afghan, and blah blah blah," so I told her about Crochetville and how all of YOU (Us) made her the afghan.
2) Tara GAVE HER THE AFGHAN TODAY WHILE I WAS AT WORK!!!! No pictures, nothing, nada, zilch.:( I didn't even get to see her get it or see her reaction... I'm so sorry I don't have pictures to post, but perhaps I'll walk across the street with the camera and say, "Maggie, look surprised and grateful abou the afghan while I take some pictures!" and I'm sure she will:D
3) Tara has now ORDERED an afghan! last night i was fooling around with some new yarn, just checking it out, seeing how it stitched up (does anybody else do that - make swatches and shells and stuff to see how the yarn is going to act before you decide what it should be?) anyway, Tara says, "What are you making?" and I said, "Thinking about making an afghan. Why?" and she just gave me this look and said, "For who?" and I said, "For you, of course!" and she got a big 'ol smile on her face and climbed up on me which made it impossible to crochet but how can you turn down a big hug from your teenager:hug

Children... Impatient? NEVER!!!! :)
That is too bad, it would have been cool to see... I like idea of having her look surprised...
You could go over there and tell here "OOPS, Sorry, that is for another Maggie!" ;) That would be a picture for sure.

Actually.... Maggie (Margaret) is named after her aunt who lives right next door... she goes by Margie... I could go over there and say, "Oh, I'm sorry, Honey. This one is for your aunt." After all, Maggie's gramma was Margie's mom, so she's grieving too! That would be terrible, huh:devil
Or I could say "look really surprised while I take some pictures!"
