We have had interest expressed in a Crochet-along for this excellent new book, so let's get started, shall we?

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0307339750.01._AA_SCMZZZZZZZ_V65791161_.jpg (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307339750?ie=UTF8&tag=mermaidennet-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0307339750)
(this image and link are provided freely by Amazon for remote linkage) :hook

If you don't know what a CAL is, check out the sticky thread available here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25727). Also, please note, that for this CAL, you need to have your own book, as those with one cannot provide you with a pattern! ;)

I would like to propose the lovely round shawl from the cover as our project to work on, the Chrysanthemum Tea Shawl, as seen above. If you want to work on something else from the book, that's fine too, post your progress here. :)

C'mon, who's with me! :hook

Well, you can definitely count me in!! :hook My book is on the way, and the shawl on the front cover was the first thing about the book that caught my eye.

I got the book last week. Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet Doris Chan.:clap What an experience! I promised myself I would wait until after Christmas to start any of the projects. Well, that didn't work...After I got home yesterday I started the farpoint topper (page 90).:blush I've completed 1/4. I also went through my stash and pulled yarn for some other patterns I want to work on. I really need to work on some gifts, but I'd like to join this CAL. So I'll be around, but probably not too much before Christmas...

Lucky you! :) That one's definitely on my list, but not 'til I get the right yarn. I'm not entirely pleased with my choice of plain old cotton for my first 2 projects, but I've made myself promise myself to only use yarn ON HAND for a while ( :lol ) so I'm using some of those nice colors I got from that Mil's End bin in 1-lb bags at AC Moore for my first two, or three items... I'm going to start now, making the Chrysanthemum Tea Shawl in the color pictured. :hook

Yay! :woo I'm sooo in! I wanted to do it in the green because I thought it was so pretty, but I've been spending way too much on yarn lately so I have some Aunt Lydia's "Shimmer" Fashion cotton/rayon blend in off white that I'm going to try out. :hook

I was reading the reviews of people who bought the book at Amazon.com and I was wondering if there is posted anywhere corrections for any of the errors in the book?? I love the look of the cover shawl. I just might have to buy the book.

:yayWhat a gorgeous book!

I just ordered it and another one as well. :hookI probably won't have time to start anything until after Christmas, as I still have quite a few things to finish for Christmas. I've just one left to crochet, but have to starch & add finishing touches to a whole lot of things.

Hmm, I don't know Karin, but you might also want to ask in the other thread (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38861) talking about this book. Folks reading here are probably just here to read about the CAL. :D I made a few errors along the way but I think it was just in the way I was reading the pattern.

WOW...a CAL using the cover shawl. Wish I had time to remake a sample of my own :0)! "Shimmer" would be an appropriate yarn sub. The rayon twist in it will add a pretty texture, yet not be too busy. However it is a bit finer than the "Premier" and may not work exactly to gauge. So try to keep your work relaxed so the piece will eventually block to size. Honestly, you can use ANY yarn you want or have around to make this design. Just be aware that thinner yarn might result in a small round shawl if you don't work loosely enough... conversely thicker yarn (say a heavier worsted or chunky weight) might give you a bigger round when worked with the same hook. Also, for your fancy stitchwork to be the star, stick to smooth or slightly textured solid colors. Certainly you may use multicolor or fancy yarn, but all I am saying is that your lovely stitch pattern might get lost. Best of luck. Please keep posting your experiences with this CAL. I LOVE IT!
Yours,
Doris

Yay, thanks so much for the the tips, Doris! :cheer We are so honored to have your tips here. Right from the source. :hook

I am just loving how lacy and pretty mine is turning out, even already. I had just gotten to the base row of where the leaves start, and can't wait to get home and work on it some more.

Mermaiden
December 12, 2006, 08:17 PM
Ack! Here I am now, working on row 10, and I found my first typo on the book here. Hrrrmmmm.

Chain 4, sk next 3 DC, chain 2, dc in the next 4 dc.

Something is missing after that skip 3 DC. Looks like it should be a slip stitch, or a SC.

Though :think I can't tell why you wouldn't just make a DC there instead of a sl-st and chain-2, at least that works out both sides of the leaf evenly where I did that instead. Hmm, or did it, I'm not sure yet.

How COOL is this???!!!!! My book just arrived today! Yippee!:cheer

I'm just finishing the Lisette Shawl (here's a link if you'r interested in seeing it or getting the pattern which is for sale on eBay and also through Annie's Attic http://cgi.ebay.com/Gourmet-Crochet-Lisette-Circular-Shawl-Pattern-NEW_W0QQitemZ280059127409QQihZ018QQcategoryZ11798Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem so I might pick a different one from in the book and definitely would love to work along with you all!

Alright, got a chance to check myself on that and my rendition of a row 10 correction(?) is working out right for me (thanks to the visual on the front cover :D )

Okay, I did it like this. I tried to write it out but this was easier, lol.

http://thumb15.webshots.net/t/59/759/5/21/68/2662521680026294795cRRuvp_th.jpg (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2662521680026294795cRRuvp)

Always skip 3 DC's where you chain 4, and the V will always be over the top of where the cluster was on the previous row.

I was reading the reviews on this pattern book and people who have made this pattern said there were errors in the first round and that there are errors in other patterns in the book. I'm not trying to scare anyone, just giving a heads up.....in case you come across a stumbling block when you work these patterns up.
Good luck to you all! I'm sure your projects are going to turn out stunningly beautiful! I would love to see your pics.

OOPS. I do hate when that happens. To err is human, to forgive is divine, but often not easy. My chief problem with design is the writing. I am much more a visual crocheter and actually can't spot misprints in patterns unless I am actually crocheting the stitches in my hands. Please tell anyone who has a problem with the written instructions to use the symbol diagram on page 26. That should give satisfactory results, huh?

TECHNICALLY, though, the diagram is not correct either, RND 9 not having enough double crochets in each ch sp. Assuming RND 9 AS WRITTEN (with 8 double crochets in each ch-sp) is correct, I have fixed the round in question:

RND 10: Ch 3, sk first dc, dc in next 3 dc, *ch 4, skip next 4 dc, V-st in next dc, ch 4, sk next 4 dc, dc in next 4 dc, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp, dc in next 4 dc; rep from * around, except omit last 4 dc, instead sl st in top of beg ch.

Sorry about the mess.

Doris

Ahh, thank you for that! :) I know that will come in handy for everyone once they get there.

You are so right about the chart being easier to use - this pattern is so very easy to do when you think of it visually. I hardly have to look at the pattern: just long enough to get the pattern of each row down, then it just flows so easily. I'm having so much fun with it, I'll be making another one for a coworker soon! Everyone keeps coming by my desk today wanting it! :lol

I just ordered the book today (:cheer) - so I probably won't be joining the CAL for a couple of weeks(:(). I'm really looking forward to it though! Meanwhile I can finish this ripple afghan I'm working on (feels so good to be crocheting again - :dance - after 2 years of dealing with a righthand abused by excessive PC use at work!)

Meanwhile I'm enjoying the thread and everyone's crocheting vicariously (:D). I also want to send a big :ty to Mermaiden and Dorischan for their corrections. This information will help me when I finally get started.

Doris Chan herself has made some comments regard yarn substitutions over on post 12 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=560304&postcount=12) you can check out. :hook

I have required myself to use up my stash :lol so I'm doing it in just plain old, good ole' cotton (Sugar n' Cream I believe / mil's end bag / edit, checked - yep it is) with an I hook and it's working up great! Row 23 today. I should have brought another ball of yarn to work. LOL.

I am on round 5. I had 4 skiens of a wool/cotton/silk blend that is working perfectly. I had been holding onto it for a while now wondering what to do with it. It is purple with white flecks from the cotton and darker purple flecks from the silk. I just love it.

I am in such luck!! The Farpoint Topper will have to be my 2nd project, because..... the Incredible ribbon yarn was on sale for $2 a ball at Michael's today!!!! It was coincidence that I went in, and I was just blown away to find it. :hook

Now I warn you, my work isn't perfect. I was doing something wrong at first and didn't feel like ripping it. Instead of going into the *next* stitch I think I did some of them in the same. Oh well, maybe it won't show too bad. ;)

Here it is, so far, and unblocked of course --

Doris, I did this round, started with your revised instructions above and found that it put me off one stitch- I ended up only 3 dc's to dc 4 dc's before the ch 2 space. So I eliminated the sk first dc and the whole round worked out perfectly.
Also wanted to ask you- I am a big gal and am doing the shawl in more of a sport weight yarn while still using the size I hook. I was wondering what you thought about repeating round 26 once or twice more to get a bigger shawl..THanks for all the help.:hook

Whilst pondering which yarn to use for a sub for Classic Elite Premiere, I hied on over to Yarndex.com. At Yarndex, I found the website for Classic Elite. To my surprise I discovered that Classic Elite is based in Lowell, MA, which is a 15 minute highway ride from me. So I grabbed the Christmas cash my MIL gave me and ran up there yesterday to visit their factory store.

I couldn't believe my eyes, they have a $1 bin! But best of all, they had Premiere for 3.50 a skein! Yay! :clap I bought 8 ('cause you never know) in a nice blue because green, unless it's dark, looks icky on me. I haven't started it yet because as soon as I got home yesterday I had to get ready to go out and today, alas, I'm at work.

I'll be checking again after I get going on the shawl. Did I say yay?

what a great find. We are moving to Michigan in 3 months.. I found that there is a great weaving and spinning shop about 30 minutes from where we will be living. Starting in Sept. they will be having an intensive spinning class that meets once a month for 8 months. I am signing up! I spin well but they will be teaching stuff I have wanted to know more about.

So far, so good! I am on row 11. I need to figure out a more effective way of using yarn out of a hank. I rolled the first one into a ball, but that took ages and was a royal pain. Now I've got to do the second one.

I visited Oregon (Portland area) a year ago and liked it very much. I've never been to Cali, though, or Michigan for that matter! You should be here in MA if you like the cold! Although, it's not really too cold today. It's in the forties.

Now I must go deal with the hank!

Happy New Year!

The only way to deal with a hank other than rolling it into the ball (did you slip the hank over the back of a chair?) is to put the yarn onto a yarn swift and use a yarn winder.. if you don't have those 2 items than you are stuck winding it into a ball.. sorry :)
I am on round 16. I would be further along but have been doing a couple of rows on the baby cape I am knitting for my son inbetween rounds on the shawl. I want him to be able to wear the cape this winter..

Thanks for your advice, AuntDebbie!
I didn't put the first one on the back of a chair. :bang Took me hours to roll it, at least two, probably more like three. It was sooooo aggravating! I decided to do another one, to see if I could improve the method.

I enlisted my 10 year old son to sit and hold the yarn on his hands. After five minutes or so, he pointed out that I could hang the yarn on the arms of the kitchen chair he was sitting in. (How come the 10 year old can figure this out, but I can't???) So I did and it went better and hours faster, but it was still a PITA. Next hank will go on the back of the chair!

Mermaiden
January 2, 2007, 09:00 PM
Hmm, well, row 26 is really just the base line of the scalloped edging that 27 fits onto so I'm not sure how it would look. But I bet you could just add some more of the "mesh" part, round 24 with no problems. :hook Mine came out to be about 22 inches across (and remember it's unblocked) with the Sugar n' Cream & I hook, so yarn & hook varies the size a little bit too of course...

AuntDebbie
January 2, 2007, 10:44 PM
Thanks! I will try that.. I am a plus sized gal I don't think that 22 inches would cover half my back :lol I am using more of a sport weight wool/cotton/silk combo yarn with the I hook. It is very lacy so I am hoping it will block bigger but I know I need to add more rows either way.

But I bet you could just add some more of the "mesh" part, round 24 with no problems. :hook Mine came out to be about 22 inches across (and remember it's unblocked) with the Sugar n' Cream & I hook, so yarn & hook varies the size a little bit too of course...

I was thinking of adding onto the last couple of rows somehow, since I'm 6 feet tall. Adding to row 24 is a great idea. Of course, I'm halfway through row 25!!!!! I could always frog it. I might be less than halfway through....

Do I sound like I'm trying to convince myself?

frog!! I am sure it won't be as big as you would want it to be.

Mermaiden, it turned out fantastic! I'm stuck finishing some birthday gifts so I haven't been able to start yet! aaargh!!! After seeing the color you used I may be changing my mind on the yarn I use, I don't know yet. You did a great job!!! :hook

Thanks! I was really dying to know how it would turn out in cotton.... I do like the result!

After I do the Farpoint Topper, I am going to try the Risa Robe also in Incredible ribbon yarn.... because that's what I was able to obtain, though I'm not sure how close that is to the suggested yarn. Then again I never use the suggested yarn! :lol So we'll see. I just adore the Blues shades, and the belt will be done in a silver shade of the same yarn too.

Yep yep RIPPIT Claire! It won't hurt so bad once you start adding the new row back. :hook

Riiiibbit! Riiiibbit!

All frogified! Now I'm repeating row 24. Needed another ball of yarn, so I used the hank on the chair back method which worked great until the hank slipped off and instantaneously congealed into a tangled mess. So it will probably take me another hour to untangle the thing.

Can't wait to see the Farpoint Topper!

Don't know what I will tackle next.

Mermaiden, FABULOUS JOB. Yes, block it and it will make the pattern "pop" even more beautifully. Also, blocking makes the stitches hang better, the shawl may grow to a more generous size as well.
The best way to make a bigger shawl is to bump up the gauge. This may be accomplished by either working the same weight yarn but use a larger hook than listed. Or use a thicker yarn (but as lofty and light as possible), more of a medium to heavy worsted weight. In any case, keep your work relaxed and BLOCK. See how it expands. Good luck!

Mermaiden, what an awesome job!! It's so cool that Doris is right here to answer questions.......thanks Doris!

Claire, my LYS offers winding free when you buy hanks. If yours does, I'd take advantage of the service. It sure has saved me a bunch of headaches!!

I've got some other WIP's that need to be finished before I can start something else, but I'm putting that shawl on my list!!!!

Mine is finished, except, heh heh, for weaving in the ends! I need to block mine, too, except it's pretty huge! I'll have to use a bed. I'll post a pic tonight after work, or, more likely, tomorrow sometime.

CDBear, thanks for letting me know that. I'll ask next time I go.

Wow, we got another visit from the Doris!! Hi Doris! :hi Using a bigger hook is good advice. I think I would do that if I made again for someone who needs it to be bigger. It's a good size, though, for the average woman. I'm six feet tall, so I have more real estate to cover!

Happy Monday!

Yay, check out Miss USA's shawl (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42192)! :cheer Nice work, and a lovely looking shawl.

I myself haven't gotten started on the next item in the book yet. (tsk tsk) I have had several projects pending and they were really getting to me, so I started working on my Morning Glory (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=531533&postcount=5) afghan. :hook (this was supposed to be the 3rd afghan I made, not my 1st, but oh well!)

But I will also get back to working on a project from the book really soon, too. ;D I said I'd do the Farpoint Topper, but the Risa robe is really calling to me, now that I got some yarn.

Just in case anyone is wondering about the guage with a larger hook and yarn. I just completed this using Patons Classic Merino Wool and a K hook. Mine came out to be 44 inches across unblocked. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I want to block it, as it is large enough for me already. I'll post pics soon.

Hi Christina - I'm here. I'm working on a second Curaco shawl. I love Doris's two books and can see myself spending lots of time and yarn making goodies from them. Maybe if we post we can get people interested again.

Oh yeah! I'm glad I'm not alone here! I want to do the curaco shawl too. I've made the tea shawl and nearly done with the Sambuca...just one sleeve to go. This is definitely one book that I can make multiple projects from!

I'll have to get photos posted of my Curaco. I have one done in a yarn called Ty Dy. It is gorgeous. My second is done in Caron's Country in scarlet. I have about 7 more rows to do on that one.

Hey y'all,
I'm here too. I just started crocheting this year. I found this book at the library and love it. My friend Diva loved it too when I showed her. We both ordered it and Everyday Crochet. I started the Sambuca Jacket 2 weeks ago and should be finished tomorrow! It is my first jacket/sweater and I am super proud of it. I'm doing the Rocky Road Shrug next in Fall colors.
I was looking through the "Vogue on the Go Shawls" that I picked up on a library trip today, and I didn't see much I wanted to make. However, the one I was interested in I started to read and it was by Doris Chan. I started laughing and showed my husband. I should have known! I love Doris Chan!
I usually keep 2-3 projects going at once. I find it helps me to have different skill levels availble to just pick up and relax with. I'm 32 sqaures into a granny square afghan for my son. I have no clue when it will be done. Oh, well.

Very nice. I made mine longer too. I don't like things to be too short. I will post mine soon. :o)
