Hi all -

I really want to make a sweater for myself. :dreaming I have never made a sweater before, and am new to crochet. I've seen lots of sweater patterns around, but I just want a simple one for a long-ish women's pullover that I can crochet with worsted weight acrylic yarn (Caron Simply Soft or Red Heart Super Saver, 'cause that's what I have and what I can afford). :hook

I'd prefer one that would work up pretty quickly and use only (or primarily) single or double crochet. Any ideas/links/suggestions?

:ty

I've checked out the sweaters on there before. :) I really want to make something that looks like this one:

Thing is, I can't afford that kind of yarn. I was told I could substitute Red Heart Light & Lofty for the Homespun, but that doesn't cut the price down much. :think

ya go for it! as long as your gauge is correct then you can just do that pattern. looks great

Just work up a swatch in your yarn and see if it matches the gauge. If not, go up one hook size or down one hook size. It might work out for you if the SS is a similar yarn to the one in the pattern.

Yup, what Roli said. The beauty of that type sweater is you can adjust it to your size faily easy. Just keep measuring against yourself or a sweater you own and like how it fits.
I wouldn't use Light and Lofty for a sweater like that. I think it's slightly more bulky than homespun. ;)

Hey, thanks...What does SS stand for?

I am a little worried that if I try to do that same sweater in a worsted weight yarn (which is all I have), it will be too "holey." But I guess the only way to find out is to try. :)

Thanks to all of you--you've been very helpful! :yay

Someone made the sweater off the bhg website and it was beautiful. I would give it a try. Zaraliz

Yes with one strand of ww and a K hook you will get a more lacy/holey look. One idea is to try 2 strands of ww such as Red Heart Super Saver or a slightly thinner ww yarn like Caron simply soft. In either case DO A GAUGE SWATCH! and then go for it!!

After the holidays I will be continuing designing a woman's pullover. It has begun testing but we are all on break now. It is of "Easy skill lvl" and uses worsted weight. You may even get away with using a nulky weight on it. If you are interested in testing after the holidays (most likely end of dec. beginning of jan) let me know. You can also check out my testing forum: http://www.crochetgarden.com/forum

And if you want to know sort of what it will look like, it is my Nordic River hoodie. I am transforming it into children sizes as well as a version for men and one for the ladies going from size Small up to 4X. Here is the baby version:
