View Full Version : looking for bag that rests on hip with a wide shoulder strap

At tonight's yarn circle my knitter friend brought her new awesome hip bag that she just made. It was a open top bag with a large pocket on the front that contoured to her hip. It had a really wide strap too-like 5-6 inches so it rested nice on your shoulder for heavier loads. The strap was a part of the bag-not added later. She called it a "mobius" bag because it was all done continuously-not seamed or joined.
It's kind of like a "hobo bag" in design except that it's contoured to sit on your hip better and the strap is messenger style across your body.
She's going to felt it too so it won't stretch so much with heavier loads. She got the pattern from a book, not on the net so I don't have a picture.
I WANT THIS BAG IN CROCHET! I've searched CPC and a few other sites but no luck yet-I'm not sure what to call it other than a "hip bag" but does anyone else have any ideas?
thanks!

Sorry, I didn't come up with anything after looking for a couple hours. It sounds like something I'd like to see and possibly make too!!

I also looked for a long time and could find nothing for you, but I did find this one I like

you could line it and it would hold A LOT, you could tweak the pattern as well and make the handles longer/wider...Can you get your hands on the knit pattern? They are easy to transfer over to crochet, especially something like a bag that does not have to fit anyone exactly!....After more searching I think I have found the book you want, and I see that the bag I found for you is much too big for what you want!!!LOL!!! Is this it? On the cover in the upper right hand side?

Do you know where the knitting pattern came from for this bag? Maybe someone could adapt it for crochet or there are a lot of knitters here who would love to knit it. A picture would help too. Zaraliz

LadyCrochat-yes, that is the knitting book and the picture does look a little wierd because it makes the bag look really small but the one my friend had was larger-large enough to but a notebook in the main part and the outside pocket was good size as well.
Ironically, I just saw someone's 'show and tell' on here that made a similar bag to the pattern you showed and I thought I might be able to adapt it as you said.
Thanks for taking the time to look for me!
I'll have to be sure to share it when I get it done since it's obviously a unique item to make ;)

The Crochet Dude has a pattern that sounds similar to what you are looking for:

You could leave the flap off if you didn't want it, and the size could probably be adjusted also.
Good luck with it.

Which bag is it in show and tell? I'm curious.

Here's the thread I was referring to:
http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40048
at the bottom of the post she links to the pattern which is what I think I'm going to work on.
I can add the front pocket easy enough and make it a little more flat rather than a rounded bottom.
Maybe it will be my holiday project for myself :)
