I am looking for a pattern that my mother-law did about 25 years ago. (She has sinced passed and the family doesn't even know where the blanket or the pattern is) It is a very large afghan with a large carousel horse done with 3" squares. It has yarn attached to the outside to form a mane and tail. Also with yarn to form the harness with a gold carousel pole. She had made one for my nephew and was going to make one for my daughter, but she passed away before she could make it. My daughter is grown up now and I would like to make this for her when she has a daughter. This sort of project is one that would look best hung on a wall. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. If anyone out their knows of a pattern like this let me know.

This is the only one I found that kind of resembled what you described:

I'll keep looking.

No thats not it. The blanket is many (hundreds it seems) individual 3" squares that when sewn together make the very large Carousel Horse. Like a quilt. But thanks for looking. It will be a miracle if someone had it.

Check here, I think the directions are for single crochet, but I have used patterns from here and made squares. There are 2 pattern graphs listed for a Carousel, hope this helps **************************************counts.html (http://**************************************counts.html)

If I'm reading her right, she's looking for a "granny square picture" type thing, like this cat one:

Click on "More Photos" to see fish and birds.

This looks like the type with the small squares. I just need the pattern to put the squares together. Getting closer! Thanks!

Hmmm not sure why the link isn't working.
It's row counts (graph) though, not squares. You could do it and get the same type of picture but it wouldn't be exactly the same.

These are the row count patterns linked by CrochetinClara.
Afghans using small squares to create a picture are sometimes referred to as 'picture afghans'. You often see these patterns for baby afghans on ebay. I don't think the square assembly is any different than those techniques used for square assembly generally.

I see that those links are not available right now, something about exceeding it's transfer limit. I have altered the patterns on there, instead of using rows, I have done squares...just takes some playing around with :hook

Thats is the type of blanket she made. The one in the thread had solid colored squares. Each square on my mother-in-laws, had squares that had different squares that had half/half colors, I think even colors that had 3-4 colors in each square. Any way thanks for the help.

Janet,
I don't have a carousel horse, but I do have a rocking horse pattern. I made this about 13 years ago for a friend's first baby. It is made up of 2 inch granny squares and the finished afghan measures 40 x 36 inches.
This pattern is in a magazine called "Country Handcrafts", Spring 1991 issue.

Maybe you could draw out your carousel horse and "assign" granny squares to it, kind of like going a graph but not? Ok, that didn't make sense, but hopefully you know what I was trying to say!
Good luck,
Leslie

This is the closest! If I cannot find the original, I will make this one. Thanks!
