I am looking for the pattern of a hat that my mom made for me back in the mid to late 1960s. I've been thinking a lot about that hat lately and I'd like to make one. I've searched the vintage websites as well as Crochet Central, etc, but I didn't find that particular hat. I'm hoping someone may have the magazine from the time period that has hat pattern in it. From what I remember, my mom used to regularly get the Workbasket and McCall's. I'm hoping she saw a pattern and didn't just create her own.

I don't know if the hat had a name so I will try to describe it.

It was similar to a pillbox but wider. In other words, it didn't just sit on the crown of your head like a normal pillbox hat would. The hat had 2 parts - a top and of course the side. The top was plain sc. The side had 1" - 1 1/2" loops. On each loop was, what we called at the time, a bangle. I don't know if they're still called bangles. A bangle was a thin, circular, shiny colored disk with a hole near one edge where the yarn would go through.

Any help in either finding the pattern or helping me figure out how the hat was made would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for finding that. The top of that hat is much closer to what I'm looking for. The hat my mom made didn't have anything below the looped section and it didn't have a brim.

here are two styles of pillbox hats, you could tweak the patterns a bit and add the spangles!

Thank you for that link. I've copied the pattern. I don't know how to change a pattern or how to make the loops. Any suggestions?

Just crochet a circle for the size you want on top, then you are going to crochet straight down....they may even say to use only the inside of the stitch on the circle so you will get a sharper "turn" from the top of the hat to the sides......if you still want to add the spangles, here is a pocketbook pattern that I like and it has a great tutorial for adding spangles to crocheted pieces.....

That's certainly a possibility I'll consider. It certainly seems simpler.

I remember the bangles were on the loops so I'm assuming they were threaded on the yarn before she started crocheting the hat. Let me see if I have this correct in case I decide to use this method -- make the crown, start the side. After so many sc (let's say 3), slide a bangle down, make a loop, sc to anchor it and repeat. Is this correct?

Yes, that is one way to do it, or look at the tutorial above, if you find bangles with large enough holes, and are useing a smallish hook you can crochet right through the hole in the bangle! I think it is a much easier way of doing it! But whatever way works best for you of course!:)
