What do you make the socks out of? I know there is actual sock yarn, but what else? Do you use worsted weight, or cotton?? I have obviously never made socks, but I would like to give it a try. Thanks.:sheep :ducky :sheep

Nah, it's not a stupid question. :) It's a good one!
I'd say it's really up to you. :)) I've seen patterns that call for a really chunky yarn, like Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick & Chunky, and then some call for a worsted weight, DK weight, etc. If you wanted to wear your socks with shoes, I would definitely go with a sock yarn, which about the same as a fingering weight yarn.

The socks I've made are just to keep my feet warm on our hardwood and tile floors, so I have used any kind of yarn that appeals to me *g* I made a pair out of sugar n cream cotton... warm enough, but when I walk out in the hallway on the concrete floors, I can feel the cold through them. I've made some out of a very thin, probably dk but not sure as it had no label, some out of regular ww... so far I haven't used sock yarn or wool yet. Those are on my list though *g*

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gifMany of my socks have been made of homespun. The rest from ww wools and woo blends. And yes, I handwash all my socks! :)
The beauty of using a toe up pattern is it is fitted as you go and can be made with anything on hand or that appeals. WW socks are great for Birkenstocks or as house socks. Lighter weight socks are good for shoes. It doesn't get cold enough here to wear wool socks with shoes--not that I wear shoes all that often. But I do wear them with my Birks! :D
