I am the recipient (thank you Ulla!) of some great sock yarn.. the kind of yarn that magically makes stripes.

What sock pattern is the absolute *best* for a beginner? :D!

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

I knitted cuff down ones and they never :bang ever :bang ever :bang ever :bang fit.

Poor Samplerlady! :(

I do gauge (spi) times inches of the person's ankle, and I subtract 10% for snugness. I usually knit sock wool at 8 spi and my ankle is 8 inches, giving me an initial number of 64, but as I said I always subtract 10% for snugness, so I cast on somewhere between 56 and 60 stitches usually. (Depending upon the pattern repeat I'm doing.)
