am i crazy? does this (http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/lionbrand/index.fcgi?page=http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/cwe-socks.html) sock appear to be done in vertical rows?
or is it a picture of a knitted sock?

i decided to move my frustration out of everyone's good vibes in the sock CAL....:blush

It looks like it might be worked vertically... If it's crochet. It looks knit! :thinking2

Yup. Despite their directions, I'd say that photo is of a knitted sock. If you make one up, I'd be curious to see what it looks like in crochet!

Wow.. could it be turned inside out? With working in the back stitches like that? Can't wait to see, Rebecca! What a mystery! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/scratchchin.gif" />

Unfortunately, when LionBrand has both a knit and crochet pattern for the same thing, the picture is usually the knit version. It sucks because what you get from the crochet instructions is not what you see in the picture.

I am curious to see a photo as well, rebeccav.

well, i had to go froggin with this sock last night. pretty frustrating. i had quite a bit done, and then when my daughter came down (after a few hours of sleep) all groggy and grumpy, i had her try it on.... it was too tight around the calf. i plan on just jumping up a hook size --- is this the best thing to do, or should i add stitches???

i'll wait for advice before i pick it up again :pig

I would add a stitch on each side, maybe one or two rows and then stitch up and let her try again. That may make the difference. If you go up a hook size, the stitches will be bigger and it could be noticeable.

thanks julie -- one more question, i was working it in spiral rounds --- just do an increase or two on the beginning

maybe you need this info:
you make the cuff vertically back loop only so it is stretchy stitch together on the short ends to make a circle (looks like a little tire) then continue (because you don't finish off)with 20 sc's evenly around the cuff circumference to start the body of the sock... then spiral down.....
should i do a few more sc than 20?

GRRR!
well, i upped it to 24 around the band of the sock and even stitched a bit looser - still too small. she can't pull it over her heel. i give!!:mad

Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with socks, Rebecca! :cry

That's exactly why I prefer to do toe up socks (http://www.graftonfibers.com/socks.htm) :idea

Don't hate socks, it's not their fault... :bigsmile
