Yes, spinning can be addictive. So can wheel buying. I have two. :) I have a portable and a traditional. I take my portable (an Ashford joy) camping even...now that's true addicition.

Thanks! It does vary somewhat in thickness, and there were a few entertaining moments where the stuff waiting to be spun got wrapped around the stuff spinning... but I am a bit of a perfectionist. ;)

I think I'll try plying this little bit, just to see if I got the right amount of overspin. :)

do you like your Joy? i have been eyeing a wheel .. and decided i was going to get something portable just for that reason .. i want to take it where ever and i didnt want to get a big one and wish i had gotten a small one instead

A wheel would probably be fun some day, but not until I move back to Canada. I already have enough stuff to bring back. ;) Did you see the neat stuff on Yarn Harlot's blog? Wow!!!

I plied half of my singles last night... I decided to save a bit of each of my "firsts" for posterity. ;) I took a picture, but it's kind of hard to see the plies, so I didn't post it.

What is Andean plying? Is it like navajo plying?

Mielke's Farm have some good instructions on how to Andean ply (http://www.mielkesfarm.com/andean.htm). It's a way to ply from a single source -- basically you ply the two ends of your single together and work your way to the middle. You wrap the yarn around your hand and it keeps it neat enough so you can ply directly from it.

[I was skeptical about Andean plying the first time, but it worked out really well -- hard if you have a very long single, though. :) ]

Navajo Plying (http://www.icanspin.com/navply.htm) is used to make 3-ply yarns (or multiples of 3). It's a neat method, too.

I LOVE my joy. I still use my traditional, but my joy is incredible. I can spin lace weight without a lace bobbin. It's so easy to sit outside and watch the kids play during the summer. I took it to the school last year after the kindergarten kids went on a field trip and saw a sheep being sheared and gave a demo on how to spin. It was easy to fold up and go instead of lugging my traddy along. The lady I bought both from tried to convince me to get the joy to begin with but I had thought I would be doing renactment demos and stuff, but alas, that fell through when 4 more kids joined our tribe, so I went for the joy.
