OK so this is what I've got so far.... can you tell from this picture if I'm doing it right? How tight is it supposed to be spun up? This feels pretty tight to me, but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way or not lol. Wanted to get some opinions before I go any farther. I've been using Rebecca's site and The Joy of Handspinning because I had to see video, reading and looking at pictures just doesn't quite do it for me at this early stage lol. I wish I could have one of you ladies by my side right now lol.

Also, how thick should I be shooting for? Is it better to go for something thicker at first and figure out plying later?

Marvie, that looks AWESOME!!!!

You got the same set I did. Your yarn looks very even, excellent job! Personally, I would work on getting a consistant thicker yarn, you can always use it as a single. Then as you get better, work on thinner stuff to ply.

My stuff was way over spun at first. I'm not coming up with the right words to explain the difference between enough twist and too much twist, hopefully one of our more experienced ladies will step in <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/not.gif" />

wow, I don't know anything about spinning, but that looks pretty even to me! Can't wait to see it all done!

(Now you just need to talk hubby into one of those really really cool wheels!:bad )

Thanks Holly =) I'm pretty impressed with it *g* even if it is over spun lol. Which it probably is. I'm scared to death to take it off the spindle when the time comes cuz I just know it's going to fall to pieces lol

LOL Mysti... I think a wheel will have to wait a while *g* but I will probably ask for one before we head back to the states (assuming we're here a while longer) because we'll have more money here than we will back home. So if I'm going to get one, it'll almost *have* to be while we're here, or at least the money set aside for it.

Wow... that sure is lovely yarn you're spinning! How long did it take you to make that much?

Oh Marvie--I am green with envy girl!!!!!!!! Eeeeek, it's even the same one I had picked out!!!

Well it's just a little bitty bit... and once I watched the videos, figured out the whole leader thingy and then figured out how to add new fluff when the first bit ran out.... that bit that's on the spindle probably took about 10 minutes or so?? In reality it was probably a little more because I dropped it twice and had to start all over, but that's a pretty fair estimate once I got done fumbling lol.

Deneen... are you gonna get it?!?! You really really should *g*

I'm already kinda addicted ****. I'd be on ebay hunting more fluff already but I have to wait for payday so I can't go looking till then.

I'm pretty sure I'll have this fluff spun up before the weekend it over, unless life gets in the way *g*

The big test will be once I spin it, getting it to the point where I can use it ;)

I'll probably be haunting this forum and whatever websites I can find for the next few days :read everything I can get my hands on and asking thousands of ?'s

this has just opened pandoras box.. i have found i *need* a niddy noddy.. carders.. and a lazy kate already and of course more roving!

rebeccav

elizabeth, here is a pic of the niddy noddy hubby made me. he did it with pvc pipe for around $5... there are advantages and disadvantages to it:

i can put the WHOLE thing in the 'hot bath' to set the yarn and not have to worry about unwinding and finding a place for my yarn to hang and what to use for a weight :D!

but... it's not as pretty

but.... with it being so cheap and easy.... i have more than one!

and.... he found a pipe with this little 'hump' in it, makes it EASY to handle while winding on :yes

Mmmm yeah... I haven't mentioned those things to hubby yet ****. I can make do without them for a while, wrapping the yarn on my arm (like an extension cord) will do for a bit... or the back of my computer chair *g* when I start fussing about how uncomfortable that is I can mention how nice it'd be to have some of the other things. Carders... hey we have pets *g* just use dog slickers =) But if I do go back to the states for a visit, I think I'll have to maybe see if I can't get some supplies there heheh

That's pretty nifty too... dang I wish we could get to a hardware store lol. Something else to add to my growing list of things to do when I visit home. I have a feelin I'll be sending hubby a box of pvc pipe bits. I can only imagine his face when he gets it :rotfl "wtf am I supposed to do with this???" Heh, better yet, I'll print off the pics and enclose them in the box :bad
