She has an ebay store - Annie May's Spin and Wool (http://stores.ebay.com/anniemaysspinandwool). She handpainted the spindle and the roving is just plain gorgeous! :)

So last night I was sound asleep in my bed. :zzz I woke up coughing for some strange reason but was able to get back to sleep pretty quickly. I had this strange dream that I had won Tiff's drop spindle on eBay with that pretty wool. :cloud9 In my dream, I kept trying to get the spindle to spin, it wouldn't work. I wouldn't work, I guess I should say. I tried and tried but I couldn't figure it out. And in the background of my dream, I could hear Tiff and Rebecca urging me on :cheer , telling me not to give up. :clap I suppose this means that someday I'm going to buy a drop spindle and give it a try. :rofl Right now though, I'm just kind of irritated that I couldn't get it to work! :ohdear

that is true... i'm totally obsessive:ohdear
but one neat thing about spinning is that you can spin, then crochet, then spin........
breaks it up, ya know?:sheep
hmmm, lizard puppy snack. i bet my dane would love that!:eek
seriously, i really have nothing against them. it's totally the thought of a cage. my next door neighbor (in a duplex a few years ago) had 3 or 4 iguana's. i lizard sat for her several times when she went on vacation. they were quite interesting. the male (bruce) used to change all kinds of colors and used to hiss at me.:wha although they didn't have cages... they pottied in litter boxes....:idea

:shrug I am so clueless. I thought you had to spin yarn using a big wheel thing... or is that only in Disney movies?
Will this spindle actually do the work of the old spinning wheel? :huh
(I'm actually afraid to ask these questions... because I, like Holly, have problems with complusiveness :rofl and if I start another hobby... oh dear! :ohdear )

I thought you had to spin yarn using a big wheel thing... or is that only in Disney movies? One can spin wool (and other animal fibers) in one's fingers. :))
Will this spindle actually do the work of the old spinning wheel? The hand spindle is thousands of years older than spinning wheels. So to answer your question, the new fangled spinning wheel does the work of the old fangled spindle. :))

deb, i used a drop spindle to make the yarn i made that belt for my daughter. it's fairly easy and portable - and, a spinning wheel costs around $500 (& up). my spindle plus roving and an instruction book was only like $22 or something.:wink

and, a spinning wheel costs around $500 Spinning wheels can be purchased for less than $500. Check out the Louet S17 (http://www.louet.com/index2.htm) which sells for less than $250.. It's can do everything one of the big ones (Ashford and those types) except spin cotton. I have a LouetS 15 which is the next wheel up.
Granted one can pay well up to $1,000 or more for a wheel but for the beginner, I can't help but promote the Louets. They are a good wheel that is very inexpensive and does everything the big ones do. Much easier to move and take to a friend's house for the day, too. :)
I can use a spindle, but I find it's just too much and tries my patience to the point of hysteria. But it was where I started when deciding if spinning was something I wanted to learn. I went the very inexpensive route and made my own like this CD spindle (http://danielson.laurentian.ca/qualityoflife/Fulltext/Textiles/Making_a_cd_drop_spindle.htm). :))

thanks for the info!! i'm looking into getting one, now :))
any particular dealer you recommend?

Check the leading manufacture's sites to see if they have a dealer near you. Ashford, Louet, Majacraft, Lendrum, Schacht, Golding, Kromski, Jensen, Timbertops, Cranbrook, Leclerc, Norwood.
And don't forget Babe's. This one (http://www.babesfibergarden.com/BFG92001/price.htm) is made from PVC pipe. It's not pretty at all, but for less than $150.00.... And it spins. It's a very good beginning wheel and can be used by kids as well as adults. So, for a first wheel that can be handed down to some interested youngster or sold to someone just beginning, it's a good investment.
As Forrest's mama used to say, "Pretty is as pretty does." The Babe isn't pretty but it works. The big wood romantic spinning wheels are pretty but they don't spin any better (for the beginner) than the Babe does. If you want a wood one, I'd go with the Louet as it doesn't require adjusting, oiling, etc., like the fancy pretty wheels do. And you can paint it yourself for your own enjoyment. :)) http://www.netsnapshot.com/users/11352/images/th_QTyvh8CoBQIAAAHROUI_11352_159.jpeg

Well...I did it. Took a few months but I clicked the link <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rocking.gif" />
I've got a bottom whorl spindle and some lovely purpuly roving on it's way to me <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/dance.gif" />
If I get that to work out, maybe I'll tell DH I want one of those Babe wheels in exchange for the knitting machine!!! Then, I just need to twist my sister's arm into buying Alpaca like she's been talking about <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/idea.gif" />
