Hi all,
new to all this forum stuff so I hope i'm doing this right, anyway.
My husband is a submariner in the NAVY & is needing a blanket about a twin size, he would like it in red, black & little bit of white for his favorite college football team. He wants me to crochet instead of buying (which would have been easier) but when i come up with ideas it always looks like a checker board :( which I need to avoid, Need help asap he will be leaving for a patrol over seas soon.
I will be willing to hear ANY ideas :)

:think Hi Tammy
Which foot ball team is that and do you want a graph or just a easy pattern :D

Dorothy,
The team is Louisville Cardinals, I don't think I have time for graph just easy pattern, but would consider graph for the future :)

A ripple would work nice. That way you could control just how much color you want it to have. I made my DH a ripple in his favorite colors a couple of years ago (Black, Tan, Grey) and he loves it!

Here is a link to Pumamouse. She has a Ripple formula that is very easy to follow and I have used it numerous times.

I like doing bold stripes for guys afghans, just chain to the width you need and work back and forth in your favorite stitch. When the stripe is wide enough to suit you, change colors. I've made even width stripes, random stripes, and even used all of one color before switching to another. HAVE FUN!!

You could do a large rectangular granny square - they go really fast. Just make the 1st row a little longer.

You could join us at the flannelghan CAL (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42711) but that's still a checkerboard type of pattern. You could do it with 3 strips and a border for a twin size. These go super fast!

How warm does he want the ghan to be? You could do lots of patterns with 2 strands and an N hook (except the granny IMO - it comes out too holey)

Go Navy!

I would suggest simple stripes, too.

I recently finished a man-ghan :lol using the diagonal box stitch/crazy stitch and was very pleased with the results. (See it here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=44627)) It was my first time using the stitch and I really like the texture it made. You can stripe it any way you like and since you start from the corner, you can decide as you go how long and wide you want it to be. Here are some links to how to do the stitch and a couple afghan patterns:

This one would work up very fast and be really warm.
It's done in two colors. Change it to black and red panals with white boarders. You'll have to sign up to Lionbrand (for free) to see, if you haven't already.

For a ripple, here's one of our member's in the exact colors you want. She did it for UGA. I keep eyeing it because my husband would also love one. lol

I think this is a really nice afghan for a guy too! It looks masculine enough, and you can do it up in the colors you like........

What about black with a red stripe on either end and in the middle with a white border on each side of the stripe? :yarn :yarn That seems manly and submarine like! :yes

My hubby was on subs for 6 yrs in the Navy. We got married when he got out. He was on the "nucs". That was over 30 yrs ago!! How long is your hubby on patrol? Takes a certain kind I tell ya! :P Good luck

JoAnn (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/member.php?u=5075), My husband has been in the Navy for 11 years now , he will only be out on patrol for 3 month intervals. Could be worse :D

Thanx for the blanket idea

I have made two afghans like you speak of. The one that I think would work the best is the "stripe" one I made. It went really fast because I used 3 strands of Caron One Pound and a large hook (N or P?). It's all sc, but with 3 strands, it went super fast. I could do a row in 5 minutes, and it's only 210 rows, which is very long, you wouldn't need that long, I don't think. Yours could be narrower for a sub bunk, too. I used 3 strands of black, then 2 strands of red/1 of black, then 2 of white and 1 red in the stripes. Very simple, VERY warm (I hear those subs are damp) and very fast.

I would have used a strand of each color and used a giant hook. Yes, I am that lazy. :D

I've decided to go with something close to this blanket by krystal16. I've decided to do stripes in black & red vertically. then attach stripes with white yarn. I'd like to thank everyone for their input. My husbands going to luv it. :cheer :clap :hook :yarn :yay :manyheart :ty:2spin

Nichole,
I actually started the blanket exactly like that with an "S" hook. but didn't fall in love with it, :yuck so i took it apart. But I agree with the fact on how quick it would go. I'm kinda impatient about making things :)
