Miscellaneous Afghan CAL

I'm starting a new afghan today or tomorrow and would really like to have a CAL for encouragement. I didn't find a specific thread for the afghan I'm making or a thread that I thought mine would fit in. If anybody knows of an already established CAL for this sort of project just let me know and I'll join in there.

I want to invite anybody who is working on an afghan that doesn't fit in any of the other CAL's to join along here for encouragement.

The afghan I'm making is called "Elegant Clusters". It's in "Vanna's Favorite Gift Afghans". This pattern book was a ROAK gift to me and I adore it! :clap

I'll post a pic as soon as I make a bit of progress on it. Hoping to find others who are working on afghans to chat with! :yay

I made a CAL button if you would like to place it in your blog. Please save it and move it to you own host. Thanks!

I can get in on this one. I'm currently working on a behemoth afghan for my sister that I need to get finished because I have three others to make for upcoming late spring/early summer fundraisers and then, I have one of my own I want to do.

My sister's I'm doing with Homespun and using the Square Elegance patter found here http://www.therockingchair.us/squareeleganceafghan.html. It's coming along, I just made it HUGE!

Yay! I'm so glad you joined. :yay I joined the Flower CAL when I made my daisy afghan and I really enjoyed having others to discuss my project with.

That afghan is beautiful! Are you using white?

I forgot to mention my yarn. I'm using Simply Soft acrylic in off white. It's such a soft creamy color.

Wow...that Square Elegance pattern looks really pretty. I'm tempted to try that pattern, but am trying to stick to one project at a time. I'm currently in the middle of a Ripple Afghan I'm making for my husband. Hmmm...let me think about it. Maybe I could work on his afghan during the week and have the Square Elegance be one I work on during the weekend...lol.

Hi Aimee! Welcome!

I love Ripple Afghans! I was a brave kid when I first learned to crochet. It was one of my first projects. I still have it - one of the few things that I've made and kept.

Good luck and let us know how you're progressing. :cheer

I'm actually using granite (gray) and antique red (Homespun). It's for my sister's Harley room which is grays and blacks with some burgundy thrown in. It's a great stitch though, that pattern, and with the Homespun it's SOOOOOOOOOO warm (and heavy, this one has nearly 30 skeins of yarn in it)

February 21, 2007, 09:33 PM
Nope Aimee and Barbara Jean, i was NOT kidding. The family birthstone afghan I made I used 25 skeins and my sis wanted something as big if not bigger. I am down to 10 skeins remaining now on my sis's afghan and I"m hoping that I won't need more. I really want it to be wide enough to justify how long it is. I'm gonna go take a pic for you guys to give you an idea.

Actually, if I can put some quality time in on it, I'm sure it can be done in about a month. Unfortunately I've had a cold for the last several days and don't feel like doing much but curling up in my chair and moaning. :( I'm finally starting to feel human again.

They're actually called clusters. A dc behind the cluster on the previous row makes it pop like that. When I first read that I would be working behind and on a previous row that it might get complicated but it really isn't at all.

I have two squares of my afghan done. Sorry I can't post pictures. On my to-do list is get a digital camera and Learn how to use it. I've promised myself to be doing so by the end of March.
I like the afghan so far, but the squares are working up smaller than gauge. I think this yarn is thinner than the RH worsted that's called for. I've already moved up two hook sizes, so I think I'll just live with this size and improvise later.
I'm off to visit my grandchildren (and my son and daughter-in-law) for the weekend. See you all again on Tuesday. Marci

Not sure you can w/o frogging. It sounds like you are missing stitches as you repeat rows. The only way to prevent that is to count your stitches or stitch patterns and make sure you have the correct number.

The other thing could be you are missing the very last stitch that goes in the turning chain.

vcufashion419
February 24, 2007, 10:10 AM
How do I get it back to the width it was before...is there a way to fill in? Or should I just try to increase at the end of each row? I was planning on doing a border after it's done so I can probably figure a wawy to "fill in" then I suppose.......although I'm tempted to frog cuz I'm not TOO far into it, and it's for my first neice so I want it to be PERFECT!!! :manyheart

I've now had to frog several times on this project. :yes My husband said that being such a perfectionist that perhaps I shouldn't do this particular pattern, that maybe I should find something else. I'm really liking it though :manyheart so I'm going to stick with it. I think that I'll get more and more comfortable with it because the pattern is very repetitive. In fact, once I finish row 5 I will just be repeating those 5 rows until it reaches the desired size. So.... I'm sticking with it. :yay

Good luck!

Ok I did it! I ripped and ripped and ripped until I only had 4 rows left :( But I re-crocheted them all and it looks so much better!!! :cheer Still a little wavy on the ends but I think that may just be from the shell pattern itself...plus I'm going to do some sort of border around it when it's done so that should fix that!! But I'm just about back to the point I was before I frogged it!:hook

Now I have to goto work for the rest of the day...too bad I can't crochet while waiting tables!!! :rofl

I've crocheting for a while now and with a new pattern I need to frog a few times. With some patterns I just need to keep trying because doing the crocheting helps make the pattern make more sense. Recently I made a mistake in a doily I was making. First, I thought it was a mistake just a few rows back but in reality I made a mistake in the very first round!

Hello, Barbara Jean - mind if I join you?

I just started a Terry Kimbrough afghan last night called "Peachy". I found a great deal on RHSS mill end bags (16oz/$2.99) and bought some Aran. I'm going to donate this one to my children's school for a raffle for their "Arts in Education" program.

So far, it's going pretty quickly - hope to have it done in a couple weeks, with the other things I'm working on slowing me down along the way! I'll take a pic later..

I'm happy to report I've only got four more rows to complete on my afghan and it will be an appropriate width (the length is outrageous). I'm going to have a few skeins of yarn leftover so it will be less than 30 skeins, more like 26-27 by the time I edge it, I think. Currently it's the width of my couch and the length of the sectional sofa my sister has in her Harley room so, I'm almost done so I can move on to the next one PHEW :clap

Joyce

It's after 11, I just finished the pattern. I'll be working on the edging the next week or so and it'll be done. Without edging it is 74.5 inches wide by 134 inches long and with the Homespun, it's ridiculously HEAVY.

I've gotten some more done on my baby blanket in the past few days...although that frogging really put me behind!!! I'm about a third of the way finished. I should get a good chunk done tomorrow as I am hanging out with my preggo friend (she's 7.5 months along, the father is away temporarily and the dr just told her to cut back work, so she is bored outta her mind! So I'm teaching her to crochet :hook)

I'm proud to say that I got 5 rows done during art history this morning and still managed to take 4 pages of notes!! I was trying to resist but I was falling asleep and the crochet woke me up! Hehe :)

Well, I made my first basic granny square in 2 colors of blue, delft blue & light blue, & it's laying on the coffee table, I think it came out pretty good..

When I get a couple more made, I'll post a picture of them.. On the outside of the granny square, for a little extra, I made a half double crochet stitch, in every stitch, & in the corners, I made 4 HDC, so, when I am ready to sew them together, it'll be nice & strong, atleast i think so:yay :yes

The exciting thing is just getting started on them, with the straight ripple, & the round ripple just to the left of me on the couch, I've been busy, but this granny square just thrills me:manyheart

HI everyone! I spent the weekend and an extra day away because we got snowed in. I'm afraid I didn't get much done on my afghan as I was busy helping my grandbabies learn to walk. They're 11 months old and my daughter-in-law would be just as pleased if they crawl for another few months:lol :lol
Today I got one more square done, which makes 4 of 24 out of the way. I love the Caron Simply Soft, which I believe BarbaraJean is using, too. It has almost a sheen to it, and it just glides through my fingers.
The lace pattern uses DC, Ch, and Picot in an easy repeat, and there are only 7 rounds to each square, so it works up fast.
Seeing all your pictures and reading about your progress gives me lots of incentive to keep up. Marci

Barbara Jean & All,

I'm crocheting an afghan for my son and future daughter in law (this May) so I need to get with it and put some of my other WIPs aside for the time being. I'm using Rowanspun Chunky Tweed in a medium beigy (is that a word ;) ) color and I have about 20" completed. I only have 10 skeins of this yarn and I was thinking that I'd have much more than I would need but already I've used 4 and just began my 5th. My son is hoping it will be about 70" long and honestly, I don't want to do the math and find out that I'll be short of that. :think This might wind up being a very short lap blanket and not an afghan afterall. :blush

Count me in on the CAL, and regardless of the completed size, I'm going for it! :yes :yes

I'll join in! I've been working on my very first afghan for a few weeks now, wish I could recall exactly when I started, but at least I know I ordered the kit on 11/15 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=531533&postcount=5) since I posted it, hehe.

I am making the Morning Glory afghan, Maggie Weldon pattern I bought as a kit that came with Bernat Satin yarn. Feels as soft as Caron so-soft, but the yarn is slightly larger and firmer. Seems perfect for an afghan! :hook

7 strips, I have made 5 so far.

I've been enjoying the repetative work on the strips. I work on this mostly when times are slow at work, almost never at home, and I've taken it out around town with me a couple of places to work on too, hehe. I don't know why but I'm more nervous about making the simple flowers that'll go on it than the afghan itself. I always feel so lost when I finish up a big or long-term item like this, kinda like the child has grown up and left home or something! So I am working away diligently, but don't want to be done. Oh well, I'll just have to work on my long sweater after this I guess. LOL.

How about you, Joyce? Will you be working on another afghan once this one is finished?

I'll DEFINITELY still be around I have THREE more afghans to make after this one. They're all for charity auctions and the first one has to be done end of May (I think)

Thanks all. Im soooooo glad it's finished because it's so big. My sis picked the colors, but they're the exact colors I would've picked for her if I didn't have her input, she's a HUGE fan of burgundy and the only room in her house without some shade of it is her grandson's spiderman room

I've moved on and have the 1st Waldo's Puzzle square for my next afghan nearly done. I just took a break to eat some dinner. Back to crocheting in a bit.

I'm so psyched and I wanted to share. I absolutely LOVE Chris Simon's square patterns. http://www.geocities.com/cdjsimon/crochet.html

So far tonight I've done the Waldo's Puzzle, Star OVerlay and the Butterfly Garden. These are wonderfully easy patterns for me to do and I"ve BOMBED on other granny squares, or working in the round before, so I'm so thrilled. Since I plan to make 20 12" squares for this Relay ghan I need to find one more pattern I like and I will make five of each of them.

Here are some pics

Any suggestions on how to keep me motivated on this ginormous project? :worried

Motivation suggestion - check back to this thread often. I was making a daisy afghan/baby blanket (pic in my blog) and joined the Flower CAL. I was making decent progress but slow. Then I received the shower invitation and realized I had about 6 weeks less time than I thought to complete it. I can't tell you how much the ladies in the Flower CAL motivated me and kept me going! I had in finished with a couple days to spare.

I'll add your name to the first post and if you can give me a name of your afghan I'll add that too. :hook

I think the official name of the pattern I snagged is the "luxe ripple throw" from the Feb/Mar Crochet Today! Magazine... but I've dubbed it my "Woolly Zen Blanket" because the fuzzy yarn between each of the other colours reminds me of the raked sand gardens.

I can totally understand the washable aspect... the yarn I ended up using was from my stash that I had been hoarding since I purchased it on Boxing Day (at an unbelievably wicked price! ~$8/ball for the Rowan plaids, original price $23 each!). I'd been at a loss for what kind of project to begin with it at first but couldn't resist buying it anyways. Funny how that happens, eh?

I apparently have no self-control over yarn :lol

So did I. But I made a birthstone afghan in November that had the birthstone colors for 10 family members in it and it ended up being 27 skeins plus one skein for edging and my sister LOVED how big it was. I talked to the recipient today and he said he and his fiancee have been sleeping with it on the bed EVERY NIGHT since he got it at Christmas and that while it's heavy it's much loved.

This project:

http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24835

There were 15 12" squares. made by 11 or 12 different ladies. You can imagine the challenge there. I decided to whipstitch them together because I think it would have been much more difficult to crochet it together when there wasn't the same amount of stitches on each square. There's a picture of the completed project near the end of the thread and also in my blog.

You mentioned you'd like to find another square. I just remembered that this butterfly garden square takes on an entirely different look when you change the color combination. You might try that.

If you look at the Heart of Family afghan in my blog you may be able to see that 2 of the squares are this pattern. They look different though because of the different color changes.

I was thinking of using the Dudessembly method. I am not havinga problem keeping the squares the same size. The main problem I was having was that how the rings in my Waldo's Puzzle squares are interlocked looks different for each square like that I've done (if that even makes sense)

I'm hoping to get at least a few rows done on my afghan. I feel bad leaving it just sit there, unloved. I had gotten more yarn in baby colors earlier this week to make more baby things and it would be a waste not to use it.

I think I'll have to put myself on a schedule -- Monday and Tuesday - baby stuff; Wednesday, Thursday - afghan; weekend - whatever I want to work on. That should work, don't you think!?!?!

I think I'll have to put myself on a schedule -- Monday and Tuesday - baby stuff; Wednesday, Thursday - afghan; weekend - whatever I want to work on. That should work, don't you think!?!?!

Sounds like a plan to me! :dance

Actually, I think that is a really good idea! :yay

I am still fairly new here so I'm going to attempt to post a photo (hope I do it right). Here is what one of my hexagons looks like. It is made with Lion Brand Homespun in Tudor. I have others that are 1/2 Tudor and 1/2 Deco. I just love the way the color changes on this yarn - it makes it look like you've done more work than you actually have :hook

I have 10/20 squares finished and am working on the 11th right now. I needed an opinion from my best friend on the colors of a variegated yarn I bought before I continued with it and when she approved (She works for the American Cancer Society) I proceeded, but she just had surgery so I was helping her out a bit today too.

While we're at it, I'm looking for a breast cancer ribbon pattern to do an overlay much like the Chris Simon Star Overlay pattern I'm doing. I'll use Chris' background square pattern, but haven't been able to find a ribbon patten that I understand. Anyone?

Thanks in advance

Hi I am working on an afghan that really has no pattern. I am makeing it up as I go along. It is in all shades of yellow and all types of yarns. I am making 10in by 10in Grannhy Squares. Then doing the last row in white double crochet. If I can finish the roll of film in my camera I will try to post pictures.

I'm sorry to have been silent for so long. In the last 12 days I've been busy, but not with crochet, unfortunately:( However, I did get a little more done on my summer lace afghan. 8 of 24 squares are complete.
It's a "join as you go" pattern, 6x4 squares long and wide. So, one and a half rows out of four are complete. I really like the way it looks, but the Caron Simply Soft is working up smaller than gauge, even though I've moved up two hook sizes.

The squares are not "square", the finished ghan will have a wavy? lacy? edge. So I'm not going to try adding more squares to make it bigger, because I don't want to have to work out a new count for the edging. :think

I read all the posts I missed. Congratulations to you all for working so hard . I've got to get back on track here! BarbaraJean, thanks so much :manyheart for sticking with all of us who haven't been "regulars". Marci

I have all the centers of my squares done. I have 3 full squares done. I decided to make the squares larger using aran instead of black and I love how they are turning out. The aran makes the reds stand out more.

I would have had more squares done if my DH hadn't decided he wanted me to play EVE Online with him, lol. I played games instead of crocheting this weekend. Bad me, hehe.

I like "join as you go projects". But I'm really enjoying this one piece afghan because there is NO joining. ;) I really like the Caron SS. Mine is actually turning out to be 55" wide instead of 51".

Hi, My name is Biz and I'm a lazy miscellaneous afghan CAL participant. :blush

My intentions are great. But then things like charity hats/mitties/scarves come along and I get so side tracked by them. To top it off, then people in my family go and have babies and the 'needs' list for them continues to pile up... And THEN all the little kids in my family under the age of 10 decided they all had to be born within a 3 week period of each other and they need birthday gifts. Not just ANY birthday gift will do from Auntie Biz! They ALL know I crochet!! and just like DM and MIL they all want one of EVERYTHING I make! :sigh

I'm a slacker. I know. I've accepted it. I can only hope that you can too.

Oh My! I'm back to report I got nothing done on my afghan today. Sorry everybody. But, I did work on the Blue Star Afghan CAL. Yep, I admit it: I'm a CAL junkie.:lol :lol

And these aren't the only two I'm working on. Also, I dug out a sampler afghan that's been in my WIP closet for a year and decided to finish it.
It looks like there are 15 squares complete out of 63. Good Grief!

I did have a plan for today. I worked on the Blue Star afghan this afternoon and saved the Summer Lace afghan for this CAL til tonight.
However, my DH is taking me to the movies tonight to see "Happy Feet".

Maybe when I get home I'll be able to get my happy fingers moving through at least one square.

Thanks everybody for all the motivation:manyheart Marci

Barbara Jean -

I have found a couple of things out:

1. Make sure you get a sweater whose side seams are sewn rather than serged. I have found Old Navy and Dress Barn ones that have a floss-type seam down them, and if you get this floss just right, it unravels just like a bag of potatoes (or dog food).. pretend the seam is a line of crochet to figure out what to cut and what to pull...

2. If it's FUZZED, STREEEEETCH the sweater as you frog it. It aids in keeping the fuzzies from catching.

3. Get only CHUNKY knit ones... I can'tIMAGINE frogging the thin stuff....

Here's my sweater and yarns that I have already done...
