I'm looking to purchase one, and was wondering if anyone could recommend some good brands in a variety of price ranges. Any help would be great, Thanks!

I'd personally recommend the "Royal" brand one. It's blue and white and a few different companies sell it. I think Joanns, and Mary Maxim does. Others too likely.

My mom had one that is still sold that is red and white and she doesn't like it as much as mine because the little metal arm to hold the yarn kept falling down on that model and yarn would get wrapped around underneath.

I have been eyeing this one...... glad you asked about the winders. I dont have the money yet so didnt ask anyone here about it. Anyway...... http://www.strauchfiber.com/bw_details.htm ($91.00)

then there is this one for $169.00.... I have read good reviews but dont think I want to spend that much for one...

I have the Royal brand as well.
I wish I could purchase a better one but for finances the Royal works just fine.

I have the blue & white one, and it works fine for me, it was less than $40, and I couldn't do without it at this point.

I had a blue and white Royal one. But it isn't very child/animal friendly. It breaks pretty easy (though I suppose it wouldn't break as easily if you take it off the table after every use - I use mine a lot and leave it on the table, where the cat would knock it off or my kid would. The little "legs" that hold it flush against the table are plastic and broke.).

I have the red and white one now, and the little metal "arm" does fall down, but I've figured out a way to hold the yarn while I wind and I don't have any problems with that. It is definitely sturdier.

and I do have troubles with the metal arm swinging. what is this red one you are talking about? maybe I should invest in a new one
