Thank you ladies for all the good comments. As yet I have not planned anything with it but earlier I had done a pramcover and a baby afghan. It looked real good. But I have no photos as when I made them the internet was not even heard of here in INDIA.Now of course it is a different story and I record everything I make.

That is a beautiful square, and I'm having trouble figuring out how the unusual-looking center of the flower is made. Can you tell us where there are instructions for making it?

I wonder if the middle is a large bobble? I'm with you, I can probably figure out the rest of it, but the center is a puzzlement.

What about beginning with a tight circle and a few rows even then work ch 3's around the bottom? Must try that

I tested my idea and it did work more or less but I think this may be the answer. This is an Irish crochet motif that I made with that "ball" added in the centre.

It would be easy to work the square around the floral part and add in the centre ball. later,
Back at plan one... I would not make it two rows high next time but this is about it. Mine only has 4 petals instead of 5 but the standard circle thingy does work.

My first guess also was a big bobble. But I don't think any of the bobbles I've done have such tiny -- and so many -- loops. It's a wonderful effect, and I wish I knew how to do it.

Thank you for finding and posting the link to the magnolia pattern. Having lived in the Atlanta area for the past three years now, I've fallen in love with magnolias and have been searching for the perfect motif for a magnolia afghan Although the stuffed centers look pretty labor-intensive, I think I'll try this square and see how it works out. A very clever pattern by the designer, but our poster's photo shows it to more advantage.

You're very welcome. I agree, the OP's photo is better.
I'm on my way to go try the pattern out now.

I'm not a great photographer.. square looks better IRL.
Yarn choice might make a difference too. Made mine with Caron simply soft because that's what I had .. something with more "body" to it might look better.

Hi Drasky,You did work it real well. The centre is stuffed with washable polyester fibre or fiberfill as it is sometime called. I had this pattern for a long time and now cant remember it from where i got it.

Lisa, your magnolia square is beautiful, too. The Simply Soft you used gives it a lovely sheen. For the extra body you suggested, I'll probably use RH Supersaver, because that's what I always have on hand, and I'm used to the color selection.
