stitch marker?

Ok, experienced thread crocheters--

what do you use as a stitch marker when working with thread? You all have made me feel brave enough to tackle working with a size 7 hook, but the sachet pattern I started called for a stitch marker--would you use another piece of thread? Will it hold? My usual tricks for yarn markers not successful.

Emily, I use another piece of thread of a different color. I pull through both ends on different rounds -
