he asked me in december to teach him but things have been busy, but im finally going to show him over spring break, yay
its actually better that im teaching him now because we'll have 5 full and 2 partial days together (3rd-9th)
and then i'll see him again for prom (26th-29th)
before there were like month long (at least) gaps between seeing each other
i plan to start him with a K hook and worsted yarn
*i think i'll have him sit on the sofa and i'll sit infront of him on the floor so he can watch me
*have him chain till hes comfortable, then pull it out
*watch me single (maybe double, idk yet) crochet a few times
*and then start him on a dishcloth or pot holder
my only cotton yarn is white, pink, and purple... so he'll probably give it to his mom or something (i told him that was my only color...hes ok with it)
im going to try to buy a more boy-ish color tommarow
if he likes it we'll go to the craft store to get him a skein of red heart and his own hook (hopefully we can get one thats not pink...)
he really likes the sound of the camo yarn lol :P
im just not sure how to handle the boyle vs. bates bit...
i prefer bates, but im ok with useing boyles
i think i'll start him with a bates and if hes having trouble i'll give him a boyle to try

So cool!!! Have fun!!!
If I were teaching...I would let the student make his/her own choices of hook make and color...it has to be comfortable for them. The yarn...they will need help to get the right type for the project...but the color choice would have to be theirs.

im going to try to let him pick it but if i cant get to the store soon enough he'll just have to learn with what i have and then we can buy what he wants for his project (probably a scarf in camo)

i dont think he'll be too hard to teach, hes pretty good with his hands and is a fast learner
even if this is difficult for him to learn i kinda owe him because im constantly having blonde moments, he frequently has to explain something simple to me like 5 times before i understand...

That's very cool. I always ask my husband "when are you going to let me teach you how to knit?" He always answers "next week." He has no desire to do either===how nice your boyfriend is interested. When I learned crochet, I couldn't get it with the chain, single, double, etc...however, when she showed me a granny square, it clicked. Good luck, and have a great time at the prom. Donna

i went to the store today so i bought him a skein of blue cotton to learn with ...the color selection was BAD...
now i just need to dig up some hooks (i keep the hook in a plastic bag with the project so i need to find what they're with)

well i tried to teach him how to chain...
he sorta kinda got it but he pulls each loop with his fingers rather than holding it the way i showed him... and after a few chains he starts messing up
he did like 15 chains then gave up, we'll try again another time
im also having trouble teaching him how to do a slip knot

When my grandma taught me, she started with an f hook and baby weight. That was too small so We went to worsted weight and she allowed me to finger crochet until I was comfortable with the movements. Then she gave me a J hook and I took off!
The person who taught me to knit started me on bulky weight yarn and 11.0 needes so I could see the stitches easily. That may be a good way to work with him. Don't worry, everybody learns differently so be patient and keep trying. :)
