View Full Version : New Special Interest Usergroups for Knitters

AmyS
April 12th, 2007, 12:04 AM
Lately we've noticed that quite a few of our members have been asking about other message boards for knitters. Many have indicated they would like to have a place here at Crochetville where they can learn more about the world of knitting with all of their Crochetville friends who share that interest. We've been thinking of how we could add this capability without disrupting the forum for those who prefer we maintain our crochet-only focus. We are pleased to announce that we have found a solution!

For those of you who don't want to have any knitting intruding on your standard crochet-only content at Crochetville, don't worry! Nothing is going to change for you at all. Just keep on with things as normal. :)

Those of you who ARE interested in having a dedicated place to talk about knitting with your Crochetville friends, we are pleased to announce two special interest usergroups:

Beginning Knitters: for those who want to learn how to knit, and also for experienced knitters to share their expertise

Experienced Knitters: for experienced knitters to share their joys and frustrations with each other

How to Join These Groups
You will not be able to see either of these areas unless you take special action to join these groups. To join either or both groups, click on your User CP link in the dark blue navigation bar at the top of any forum page.

Scroll down to the Miscellaneous section on the left and click on the link for Group Memberships. From there, you can choose to join either or both of these groups.

How to Find These Groups
Once you have joined these groups, you will see a new category on the main Crochetville page called Special Interest User Groups. It will appear at the bottom of the main page, just under the About Our Little Village section.

Once you have joined one of these groups, posts from that group will appear when you click the "New Posts" link or when you use the search feature. If you have NOT joined the group, you will not see posts from the group when you click the New Posts link nor will those posts appear when you use the forum search feature.

If you have questions about how these new optional knitting usergroups work, please join us in the discussion thread here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49193).

WHOO-HOO! This is great :cheer as I'm so green when it comes to knitting that I make Kermit the Frog jealous. :lol Seriously though, it'll be fantastic to have a spot to come to ask the more experienced knitters for advice and to answer any questions I have. I love the idea of switching between the two and hopefully....eventually....combine the two, but that's waaay down the road.

I think this is perfect timing for me! I'm getting some yarn to make my first knit scarf a Harry Potter one for dh.

Oh, this is SOOOO great! I don't knit, but I am waiting on Pa to send me some needles so I can learn. This is so exciting!!!

I'm glad everyone who's posted so far is happy with the decision to add these groups.

I'm not an expert knitter by any means, but I'll be happy to give whatever assistance I can to everyone who wants to learn. :)

Actually, this is pretty darn cool! I love my crochet, but I really want and have been trying to knit for ages. All the "other" boards don't have the help and motivation that this board does, so I am HAPPY to have this available to me!

I LOVE Crochetville. I LOVE how supportive everyone is and how warm the atmosphere is. Now I can carry that love with me into the knitting world. That's perfect.

I think I'll join both groups although I'm not an expert knitter. I still want to see exquisite knitted "show and tell" items, and I'm sure I can learn lots from the experts!

OO OO OO!!!

Can I just add, that I like the way there is a little smily face that marks the threads that belong to the usergroup! When I come to the 'Ville, the first thing I do is check my subscriptions, then I hit "New Posts" - Now I will know which ones are for the usergroups!!! How cool is that???

I also joined the "expert" group - I didn't want to feel left out of seeing all their cool stuff!!!

WOOT!

I don't knit, nor have any intention to learn anytime soon, so I really like the fact that I can opt not to view the boards. One of the things I like about this place is the focus it has on Crochet as a whole--especially since Crochet is almost always just lumped in with the "k-word"--while also allowing conversations about off-topic thoughts and ideas in their own specific areas.

:cheer :clap And here I love to both knit and crochet-- so I will be in both.

I've been knitting since I was 6 years old, and even though there are some stitches I don't know anything about, I'm always willing to lend a hand.

Now how accomodating and cool is this?! You admins rock! I don't know how to knit, well, I can cast on, but it goes downhill after that! LOL!
So, the way you have incorporated knitting without changing the main board posts is really smart and really clever and really, really, really... you know,
WOW!

This is so great! I learned to knit first, then crochet. Out of the 2 boards I go to for these crafts, I like this one best. :) Thanks for making this option!!

Amy,

I do not knit. I tried and found that it was not for me! One too many implements for me (:rofl)! I love crochet (:manyheart) and am very happy that you are leaving Crochetville sorta "as is" for those of us who like it that way. Thank you (:clap)!

However, having said that, I must admit that I'm intrigued by knitting using knitting looms/boards (:think). This is very different than knitting using two needles! SO - how about creating a usergroup for those of us who want to learn how to use the tools of this craft and those who are already creating beauty with them!

Thank you Amy for doing this. I am a knitter (not a very good one). It will be nice to ask knitting questions, etc. right here at the good ole 'ville.

Ok, can someone help me find out where to apply to be in these groups? I couldn't find the "misc" section anywhere. Is it just me? A link, something? :~)

DonnaLynn: Go to top of your page, see where it says "User CP"? Click on that and scroll down to "Miscellaneous" (on the left side) then click on "Group Memberships."

Wow your timing is amazing. The latest Interweave just made me finally want to "remember" how to knit. I learned as a child but haven't touched a needle in 35 years! When the last IC issue came out the knit/crochet combo piece made me really mad - I wanted to make it. This time instead of getting mad, I decided maybe it was time to face the music!

Knowing me I will jump right in and try this as my first piece!

I just got a knitting loom and find it like crochet because the tool you use is like a hook. I got it for my son actually and he likes it so far (2 days!) and he will be 4 next month. I wrap and he puts the loops over.

I joined both, too!

I've lurked at some knitting boards, but never felt the welcoming spirit I feel here!

And besides, knitting is like my hobby from my hobby, if ykwim? It's what I do when my crochet is frustrating me, lol.

Thanks, Amy and all for listening to a question we didn't even ask! You guys rock!

I think the addition is great. What a wonderful way to show that Crochetville is not prejudice against knitting in anyway.

I have joined knitting forums but I have never found a place as warm friendly and helpful as Crochetville. I don't see the new knitting section as taking away from the site but adding and enriching the site.

Hey maybe some knitting snobs might find us and realize how much we all have in common.....well I can dream can't I?

CrochetCatskills
April 13th, 2007, 11:54 AM
I think it is a wonderful idea to have this choice. I have not learned yet, I found it more difficult than crochet, but there are alot of people that do both, and I may just give it a try again one day.

Crochetville is full of caring, sensitive and giving people and to have both of these arts under one roof is comprehensive and convenient as well as a safe haven for those not wanting to surf another site.

I do have one question..... If one decides to join and finds it not as appealing as they thought, can one un-join?

Thanks to you all who make this a wonderful, enjoying place.

Absolutely! Just follow the same steps that you do to join (going through the link in your User CP), and it will list all the groups that you have joined. You'll be able to Leave any group the same way that you joined.

So everyone feel free to join the groups, even if you just want to check them out for a day or two. You can leave whenever you want without any hassle if you decide you're not interested in knitting right now after all. :)

I think this is a great idea. I have been trying so hard to learn how to knit but I constantly feel like I'm all thumbs. I can handle the basic stitches but I don't want to make scarves forever :lol. Now there's a spot on my favorite site to get help when I'm trying new stitches.

Thank you, Amy and Donna! I joined both too. I'm really just a beginner; I only 'relearned' 2 years ago. But there's a specific knit project I've tried to get help on two other boards for a year and not had any success. I know the friendly souls here at the 'Ville will be able to help. And I'm glad it's set up so that you have to seek it out; not hidden, but doesn't detract from the main love of crochet we celebrate. Thank you!!:clap:hug Patty

How great is this ? :yay

I have crocheted almost all my life (since I was 10). Tried knitting once in my 20s and gave up - tried again last year and liked it this time. I still consider myself a beginner. :)

I love that the main focus is still on crochet because that is, after all, the reason we came here in the first place. I love that you have the OPTION to join these groups.
What a great idea - THANK YOU !! :manyheart

Thanks, Amy!! :c9
I just saw this thread by accident...and on other threads we have been tossing around the idea of learning to knit. I was shown the basics of making a scarf so many years ago it doesn't even count!

Hi, Kathy B...I'm here with ya!...without someone to guide me I'll flounder and give up!! I love the challenge of learning new things.

This is GREAT!! I know the basic of knitting and USED to do it until I got hooked :hook . But, I do know how to spool knit (still have my original one)and I have a handmade knitting loom. After seeing some of the new long and round ones almost makes me want to try it out!

This is great! Thank you so much to the admins for providing this for us. I taught myself how to knit a couple of months ago and am enjoying it as much as my crochet, so I am excited to have a place to discuss it with the others here at Crochetville. I love this board and none of the other knitting boards compare, so having this option here makes it that much more wonderful :manyheart

Now I'm off to subscribe.

Awsome, I joined the beginners, I am also making kermit jealous. My hands hurt from crocheting so I would like to put my hook down for a bit and take up 2 needles to try. I am looking foward to this. thanks again

Thank you, Thank you! I love this place! I have just learned to knit and am making a purse (to felt so I can cover my mistakes)! This will be my first knitted item. I have been meeting with an elderly neighbor who is teaching me. I am so happy to be able to come to this forum to share, get encouragement and learn - whether it be knit or crochet. I love both! :manyheart I have been to other knitting forums and they have not been helpful or as friendly as the people here at Crochetville. I am so happy to have this option and thank you to the administrators for making this available. This is such a unique community and I love that I found it and am a part of it! :c9

I've noticed all the new things you all are doing and it is fantastic! The list of LYS favorable to crochet, the list of crochet events (wish there was something in Michigan!), etc., is simply awesome! So much helpful information!

And now the knitter's groups...absolutely wonderful! I've already been treated extremely well here at the Ville when I've asked for knitting help and received many responses to posting in Show and Tell...favorable responses, of course. I never see any negative comments in Show and Tell. Everyone is always so kind and complimentary.

But this will put all us knitters together so we don't have to go hunting for one another and hope a knitter sees our post before it meanders off the 1st page in 20 seconds as they sometimes seem to! :lol

Thank you, ladies, for being so very thoughtful of the membership! :ty

I'm not sure at this point. We don't want to add so many groups that we have a second knitting board here at Crochetville, but we also want to let our members talk with each other easily about knitting.

Let Donna and me think about this one, and if you're interested in a separate loom knitting user group, let me know.

I don't know how I missed this! What a cool option. I just love how accommodating C'ville is.

I just joined both groups. I don't know if I'd classify myself as an experienced knitter . . . but I definitely have no fear in throwing myself into a difficult pattern.

Hi! I love this idea! I've tried to teach myself to knit but it feels so darn awkward, lol. I'll definitely be popping in for help. I've been regularly reading Svetlana's "My Knitting Island" blog and feeling very very jealous. I also read Crazy Aunt Purl's blog and I want to try some of their projects!
Thanks!

I was so excited to see this post! The "ville" is the first place I log onto and love everything about it. The people are great and I have so many choices of topics to read. Now, I am even happier because I do both knitting and crocheting. I am a better knitter than a crocheter and have come here for my crochet refresher course. Hopefully, I can help others as they have helped me. I don't know why people seperate themselves and are upset if they are called a crochet person or a knit person. To me, I love my crafts and if I can learn from someone, share what I know, lend support and make a friend along the way...that is what is important. Thank you so much for adding to the site!

Why not just put a loom knitting thread in one of the threads that already exists? I don't see a problem with discussing that within the parameters of an overall knitting interest group. With loom knitting in the title, you'd attract other loom knitters to come check it out. Patty

http://forums.delphiforums.com/knitchat/start

is a good knitting community that also welcomes crocheters. If it has you set up a username login first, the basic Delphi membership is free (you just don't get as many features as the paid version, but you still can post and receive responses.) I've knitted for seven years, and it is my fav knitting community online thus far.
