Filet is a type of crochet; tatting is different craft using fine thread and a shuttle (and that is an explanation form a non-tatter; my grandmother tried to teach me how to tat but I could not get interested in it at that time). If you know how to crochet, doing filet is not hard. Filet is generally made up of blocks and meshes that form a pattern, and is worked in rows to form a squarish shape or an edging, but to me at least filet is not worked in rounds. I think of a doily as being worked in rounds.

Good ole about.com has good info about filet http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa050298.htm There is lots more about filet on that site if you search around.

A good book is the Filet Crochet Book by Chris Rankin, you might see if your library can get that for you.

I haven't tried filet yet but I have been doing some needle tatting and find it quite fun. I bought Barbara fosters book and the illustrations are wonderful. I tried shuttle tatting but couldn't catch on and find the needle method easier for me. I am currently on the last round of this doily and I am pleased with how it's turning out.

The ladies in my church prayer shawl group wanted to do this and I found the book with needle on clearance at Miachel's for them at only $7 so we are going to take a break from our shawls and I am going to teach them the basics as I have learned. You can get some instrucitons on this site. http://www.hhtatting.com/learn.html You just need to find yourself the big long needle. There is really only one stitch in needle tatting and it's quite easy to catch on so give it a try. Mary

you might be interested to watch the tatting crochetalong I just started http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52227 very early days yet but lets hope it gets busier. As stated tatting isn't a form of crochet, but Cro-tat kinda is. the edges are getting smudgey on the different forms.. good luck with whatever path you choose to take!!

I don't do tatting but I have a couple how to's in my stash because I would like to learn. My MIL did it but she passed away years ago. I just found this video for purchase online. I have never ordered from them before.
