As of October 2004, this CAL is now being hosted by Mitzi (http://www.wickedstitch.blogspot.com/). Thank you Mitzi! :clap

The gallery and list of members are here (http://www.ccrtc.com/members/mitzi/pillowghan.htm). Please join us! :cheer2

We have two buttons you can use. Please save them to your own server. :))

Here it is. Our first pillowghan crochetalong. This is going to be a learning experience for most of us. I looked around the web to see if there were any rules involved. I found one defunct crochetalong, and lots of knitalongs. From what I can see, there are no rules. We're really just all working on the same project together. We can talk about it, share ideas, and help each other with any issues with the pattern or whatever. Once we're all done, we can post pictures and show off our masterpieces. It doesn't sound like much, but I get the impression it's lots of fun and very addicting.
I guess the first part of the project will be picking out our yarn. I love picking out yarn, and it will be interesting to see all the different yarns people use. I'm going to go through my stash, and see what I have.
Here's the link for the pillowghan graph - members.aol.com/crochetalong/pillowghans.html (http://members.aol.com/crochetalong/pillowghans.html)

Pam, I'm really wanting to do the pineapple pillowghan. I'm guessing everyone can do the ones they like? I've never done a pineapple anything, so here's my chance. ;)

Colors? I'm leaning towards blue, dark blue, but will probably change my mind. I know I have quite a few skeins of the Red Heart Med. Windsor Blue (or maybe just the Windsor Blue). It would definitely get me started. Decisions decisions... <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif" /> I could also do shades of blue, which sounds much more interesting to me suddenly... hmmm... pondering options.

I would love to participate in this crochetalong! Pillowghans are so much fun and make great gifts. I have a lot of projects I am working on right now, so I was wondering how long you expect to be working on this project together. Maybe if I can't do this one, I can participate in the next one!

I've never done anything in the pineapple pattern either so I think that would be fun to do. :D My grandparents travel a lot and I would love to give this to them for Christmas to keep in their van. OOH.. I think I might have to make a yarn purchase for this one. Yea!!

I don't know the 'rules', not sure if I should have started before someone says "go" or not. But I started, and am about 3/4 of the way through my first block on the pineapple pillowghan. It's really nice, really easy. Looking forward to the next square!

Nope, no rules. Just enjoy our project, and have other crocheters to talk with who are working on the same thing. I haven't started yet, but I did pick out my yarn. This is going to be for my father's birthday. I'm making mine in the basic granny square (a great travel project), and I'm going to make the top pillow square in single crochet with a picture on it. I'm not sure about the picture, I'll have to go on the web and see what I can find for graphs.
My squares are going to be in Red Heart Aran Fleck with a black edge.

Pam -

I thought about using the Aran Fleck, I do like that one. Mine is Red Heart Light Blue right now, but I'm planning on doing three or four shades of blue, and maybe the solid Aran. I'm trying to use skeins I already have, rather than buying new. I've run out of room for new! <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eyes.gif" /> So if I use them up, I can buy more! <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/roll.gif" />

Ooh! I think I will do the pineapple one also--not sure what color yet. I have always wanted to do a crochet-a-long, but only found the defunct ones. How exciting! I hope I can manage to keep up and not create another UFO (unfinished object):p

After you make the pineapple square, do you go around it with a different color like the regular granny squares? I was going to make regular granny squares because the pineapples intimidate me. lol

~Pam

Julie
March 23rd, 2004, 01:21 AM
Pam, the pineapple was really easy. I was surprised, I've never done one before but this was great.

I usually go around my granny squares too, and wondered about the pineapple square, if I should. I think it would be easier to join to the next, don't you?

PamCrochets
March 23rd, 2004, 10:15 PM
Yes, I think it would make it easier to join. I think it would also add a "finished" look to it. I'm going to give it a try. :)

~Pam

Julie
March 25th, 2004, 02:47 AM
I do prefer the sc "border". Nice and finished as Pam said, and it makes for easier measuring too.

I'm going to end up buying more yarn for this, I thought to use what I had on hand but would have had to mix colors. I think a solid blue one - mainly because I can't find any other blues I like in the same tone range. Maybe add a white or off white to it. I think the Aran would have too much yellow in it, if you can imagine that!

Tiffany
March 25th, 2004, 09:39 PM
I have finally finished my first pineapple square. :D The finished square looks much more intimidating to make then it actually is. I'm doing my pillowghan in red, white, and blue, but I'm using an off white, navy, and a deeper red. My grandparents and their circle of bluegrass music friends are into the patriotic colors right now, so I'm going to give it to my grandparents with the option of keeping it for themselves or auctioning it off at a bluegrass festival to support their music.

That's a great idea Tiff! See, I told you it was pleasant to work on. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif" /> Feel free to kick me if you want to.
I decided I was going to give mine to a lady I used to work with. Her husband died in December, and then as if that wasn't bad enough, her brother in January and her sister in February. It's not just going to be a pillowghan, but a comfortghan as well. I can't wait to get it done. I'm so glad I figured out what to do with it, and it makes me happy now to know who will have it. I work so much better on things when I know who they are for.

I've got 4 pineapple squares done so far, and I liked the Neapolitan theme so much, I am using for my pillowghan. How many squares do we have to make for the pillowghan? I can't locate my printout....<shocking>8o

Julie
March 29th, 2004, 06:01 PM
28, I was surprised to realize the other day. I had read the pattern wrong. 24 for the afghan, and then four joined together for the "pillow" top. The link for the layout should be at the very top of this thread.

shelbyro
March 31st, 2004, 02:40 PM
Thanks! I guess I'll just print it again. Can't tell you how many duplicates of pattern printouts I have floating around.

I have 5 and 1/2 pineapple squares done. I really like the pattern--it is much easier than it looks. It usually takes me about 1 1/2 hours to do one square, including a sc border.

I don't know who's going to get the blanket yet, but they have to like the Neapolitan colors!:D

thanks for inspiring me!

Oh pooh on you, Julie. (just kidding ;) )I'm still working on my second square.... :(

Congrats for making such good progress! I don't remember right now at such a late hour, but what colors are you making yours in? I remember your "no dye lot my foot" blog, but can't remember if you were going to do it all in light blue or a mix of blues..

Julie
April 2nd, 2004, 12:19 PM
lol <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif" />

I think it is going to be the one shade of blue. Although it is truly two shades of blue because of the bad dye lots. I'll hide it somehow. I had a nightmare thought last night just before I drifted off to sleep. What if most all of the skeins are different shades of the same color? I don't want it to be a checkerboard layout so if I did opt for other colors I would have to find two more. I'm right at that line now so when I go to Walmart today I'll look one last time to see if I can find something to add to it. If not, one technical shade of blue, with variations hidden away.

PamCrochets
April 3rd, 2004, 06:55 PM
I better get moving! Everyone is making such progress, and I just decided on the yarn. I started one square, but didn't like it. I've decided on the basic granny in shades of blue with white muli trim. :)

I'm going to join in too, but I have to finish my poncho first or I'll never finish either. So I'll be along in about a week.

I'm going to look around for a pattern to do, something similar to the pineapple one, but a bit more geometrical. I'll be raiding my stash for colours to see what I can use up.

Julie
April 3rd, 2004, 10:05 PM
So much for using colors I already had. I've now purchased two more shades of blue, and one of white for the afghan. It'll be pretty, but my my how I do change my mind!

Where's everyone at? I'm plugging along because I desperately want to start working with my kool-aid wool and make my purse. Can't start that until I finish this CAL. I just finished the 24th block. I can hardly believe I only have four more to go!!! <img border=0 src="http://members.aol.com/dustkittys/clap.gif" />

I've given myself a deadline that I hope to finish this by (end of May), but I'm still having trouble getting motivated to work on a square. It's really silly because I love making the squares. So, I have 3 of the 28 made. :\

I think I might make a few tonight to not feel so bad about having it sit there. :)

Something about the 63 square cal is sucking me in--that's all I've been working on. my pineapple squares are jeering at me. I need to get back to them. I'm half done, I just can't get moving on it.<img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eyes.gif" />

Tiffany
April 23rd, 2004, 04:18 PM
I think that's what happened to me too. A 7" in square in a new stitch I've never done before is much more tempting to do. Even though right now I'm in a huge potholder mood. I have found some really original patterns online (and dishcloths too) and I can't help myself!

PamCrochets
April 23rd, 2004, 09:25 PM
Julie, it looks like you're going to be the first one done. I got started later than I thought I would. I had to get that baby sweater done, and the socks just pulled me in. I've started working on my squares this week, so I'll get more done now. :)

~Pam

Julie
April 23rd, 2004, 11:23 PM
I probably won't get any work done on it today or tomorrow. I should have the blocks done by the end of next week at the latest and then can sit under them in 80° and start joining them together. Maybe that is why I've slowed down! LOL <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/roll.gif" />

Okay gals, I'm bowing out of this crochetalong. I'm going to make one more square and turn the ones I have into 12" pillows with a nice little shell edging. I feel so sad that I've decided to move on to other projects. :(

I can't wait to see everyone elses finished project though. :)

Julie
May 1st, 2004, 12:00 PM
Okay - squares are done, finally. I started stitching them together last night and though that will take a little while, I've already started thinking about some sort of border. I said at first I'd do a hdc border around, but what about other suggestions? I want something solid to contrast the open pattern. What about a hdc around, then a reverse sc? A little extra texture. Now if only I can remember how to do that stitch. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif" />

So, I popped out 3 more squares, and only have 10 left to go!

Hey, Mitzi! I'm glad you asked! :wink

Taking it on would mean, at a minimum, keeping an eye on this thread and responding to people that post here (i.e., welcoming people that want to join, cheering people on who are working on it, and answering questions about the CAL). (Note: The ezboard feature "Click to receive email notification of replies" at the bottom of the thread is helpful with this. You can click that and will be e-mailed each time someone posts to this thread.)

Ideally, taking it on would also include one or both of the following:

(1) Keeping a list of the crochet-along members either on your blog or a separate web page.

Examples: I have a separate page for the Feet Need Socks CAL (http://yarntomato.com/feetneedsocks/) and the host of The Incredible Zoo-Along (http://theknitlette.typepad.com/the_knitlette/) (a knitting CAL) has the list of participants on her blog sidebar.

Another way to list participants is in a single blog post, which, of course, you can update when needed. You could put the CAL button on your sidebar and a link that says something like "Pillowghan Participants," which would be linked to the blog post.

(2) Setting up a photo album for completed projects. This could be hosted anywhere ~ photobucket, pnavy, yahoo photos, whatever.

Well, that's all I can think of. :D! I'd be more than happy to help you get started with this if you're interested. :wink

Well, I've been working on my pillowghan and thinking about this and I'd definitely like to do it (with your help of course!) So, count me in! And then come the questions...

How do I get started?
What are the rules?
Who is already in it?
Are there already completed projects/photos?
Do we have a cute, irresistable button?

I think it would be manageable through my blog with an account set up for a gallery of completed projects. So - cool! I'm excited!

Mitzi, are you going to take this on? I've played with the idea of making one of these for quite awhile. It's a nice way to store an afghan.

After looking a Julie's beautiful finished one, I'm wondering if a another two large squares made into a pillow to slip in to plump it up wouldn't create the desired effect.....

I'm not promising to join in....but..... I was gifted with several 12 inch squares that could be made up into one. Not as well planned or elegant as Julie's.... but.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gif

<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" />Yee-ha! I AM taking this on...working on the <a href="http://www.ccrtc.com/members/mitzi/pillowghan.htm" target="_new">gallery</a> today. I have <a href="http://www.yarngirl.blogspot.com" target="_new">Julie's</a> pictures posted and I'll be looking through this thread for <a href="http://wickedstitch.blogspot.com/2004/10/crochetville-pillowghan-crochet-along.html" target="_new">members</a> and other links to completed projects. I'm not web-site "savy" <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/ohdear.gif" />and so, it's not going to be as pretty as the others, but I'm learning!

I'm very excited, but feeling like the oddball, because the <a href="http://wickedstitch.blogspot.com/2004/10/star-pillowghan-begins.html" target="_new">Pillowghan</a> I chose to do has nothing to do with squares. I'm kind of squared out right now....

Yay, Mitzi! :woohoo Thank you so much for taking this on! :hug :)h Sorry I didn't get the chance to answer your questions yesterday.

How do I get started?
Well, you have done an awesome job on that already!! :thumbsup

What are the rules?
That's up to you, since you are running the CAL. The rules I have for my CALs are:
(1) People should let me know they want to join by posting here at C'ville or by e-mailing me. Also let me know if they have a web site or blog so I can link to it. (For those who e-mail me to join and are not members of C'ville, I suggest that they join the board, but I don't require that.)
(2) Keep us up to date on progress when you can and post/send a photo if possible when complete.

Who is already in it?
I have no clue! Well, I do know of a couple (Julie and Michelle), but if you read through this thread you should find them all.

Are there already completed projects/photos?
Julie definitely. Maybe Michelle, I'm not sure.

Do we have a cute, irresistable button?
We have two cute buttons! :D! Here they are. The first one is by Julie (I tweaked it a little this morning) and the second (pineapple) one is by me. This is a new button I made just today because I was inspired that you were gonna give this CAL the love :heart it needs! I thought it would be cute to use a pineapple since so many are doing the pineapple pillowghan, but, of course, folks can use whatever pattern they like. :fluffy

Okay girls! after peeking at this CAL for sometime and toying with the idea, I've finally decided to join:clap
I may be crazy (no comments necessary), I'm gonna do 2!! You read that right.
Pillowghan #l will be with 12" squares called 'dream catcher'
Pillowghan #2 will be a travel ghan. I'm gonna make it with 6" squares so I can keep it in my car. My little one is forever falling asleep in the backseat and the mini pillow will be perfect for him and I usually get chilly in the summer with the a/c on. So, this will solve the problem (unless my son is using it as a pillow:huh ).
Thanks to Mitzi for taking this on!!:ty The gallery looks great and maybe someday soon, I'll be in it.
I'll post picks of the sample squares when my batteries finish charging.

Dream Catcher Pillowghan (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/DawnsRays/dreamcatcherpillowghan.jpg)
I'm not using this color yarn. This was only the template. I haven't decided on the colors. It's for my sis for Christmas:danc
Travel Ghan (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/DawnsRays/travelghansampl.jpg)
These are the colors and the first two squares of the travel ghan. I'm doing 14 in one variety and 14 in the other and joining and edging in black. It will go good with my red car!

Great squares, Dawn. I have a few more rows of edging to put on current afghan and then will dig out the 12 inch squares I have and see what elde I need. Hopefully by tomorrow I can post a concrete update.

Oh, and Mitzi, thanks much for taking this on! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gif

WHOO-HOO!! <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cheer.gif" />Thank you so much for joining Dawn! I love the patterns and colors that you have chosen!

I'm still going through the thread looking for others and more pictures - I did find Michelle's...I'm not usually on the PC that much over the weekend, so it will probably be Monday before I can get to more updates. Will be out of town tomorrow and we're doing winterizing today (ugh, can't believe it's that time of year again). BUT! It's the perfect time of year for making pillowghans! I know I'll enjoy snuggling under mine while I'm working on it.

This is so great! I'm tickled at everyone and the opportunity to do this. I just wish I was more handy with the web site design, but thanks for the compliments, Dawn!

I have, I think 16 competed large squares varying in size from 10 to 14 inches. So, I'm adding rounds to bring them up to 14 inches. Once I get that done I can start joining. It'll definately be a crazy pillowghan with all the various colors and kinds of squares, but fortunately, that doesn't affect the warmth factor of it!
OH PLEASE JOIN!! PLEASE!! PRETTY PLEASE????
So, I guess I'm in! How can one say "No" to a request like that? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gif

Well, I finished the afghan and its just way too thick to be able to fit in a pocket that wouldn't look absolutely ugly hanging on the end of the afghan. So, I turned the pocket into a pillow and my youngest son has claimed the afghan. Pictures tomorrow. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gif

Here's a pic of what was to be my pillowghan. When folded up, it's almost 8 inches thick.... There are 18 squares that are 14.5 inches across, plus the edging around it. They are a collection of squares that were given to me on Freecycle (http://freecycle.org/). My youngest son claimed it and is snuggled up sound asleep under it even as I type. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gif

Ok, they're on...I'm not real happy with the photo section of the Gallery. I might try redoing it on pnavy or something. BUT not till I get some of these CAL's started/worked on.

<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/welcome.gif" />We have two new people in this CAL, but I haven't seen them post here as of yet - one is a new member to Crochetville - YARNFAN and the other is <a href="http://www.purplecowcrochets.blogspot.com" target="_new">Mandy</a> and I'm not sure if she's on here or not, but I mentioned it to her.

I'll probably not be around this weekend again - so until Monday, have a great weekend - give that 'ghan a hug!

Okay, just an update to keep this cal. moving right along. I am half way through with the travel ghan (6 1/2" s instead of 12" squares). Yeah :danc I'm trying to do between two and three squares a day and attach them as they are completed. I get a better sense of accomplishment that way instead of having a stack of squares staring at me and mocking. I will not allow myself to begin anything new until this one is finished.:eek How's that for dedication.....

What a wonderful goal, Dawn! I need to get cracking on mine...have been sidetracked with my midlife crisis.

I was a Project Linus chapter coordinator for two years and thought I would mention that because I got an e-mail from a place I used to deliver blankets to and they told me they were running low and could the new chapter help out....anyways - if any of you don't have a recipient in mind for your Pillowghan - consider donating it to Project Linus or another organization. Children love the comfort and security of a blanket and the need is overwhelming. I think that is where mine will be going as I had no recipient or use in mind...

Anyways, I hope everyone is doing well and managing all of the projects we seem to take on this time of year! Time to get busy!!!

I finally have it going again with my beloved Pink P hook from the Lion Brand Crochet for A Cause kit. I adore that hook! Anyways - what a mess! I have frogged that thing more times than I can count. But -at least I'm back on track for the weekend ahead.

Hope everyone is doing better on theirs!!

I used a pattern for a 6 inch square so: the pillow is approximately 15 inches square and the afghan is 28 1/2" by 42". Just enough to keep your legs warm or throw around your shoulders. It's a great size to take to the movies or to a sporting event. You can sit on the pillow instead of the cold hard bleachers :danc

<img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/sheepxmas.gif" />Thanks for all the wonderful comments!!

I had my husband try it out last night (he had wanted a blanket with a foot pocket) and I think he'd like to keep it, so we just may hold on to it - if not, then I will donate it to an organization I used to work with through Project Linus. I would love to make another one!

The pattern is from a Leisure Arts booklet called "Variegated Variety" and is the Star Pillowghan pattern. I was all squared out when I started and it was nice to have something done in one piece. THe stitch is very similar to the Trinity Stitch on the 63 squares thing - in fact, it just might be the same one. The yarn is RH Fiesta in Millenium - works up really nice and is wonderful to use.

Okay I have two started but one is cheating LOL.

I am making one out of 12 inch granny squares made out of whatever scraps I have just sitting around. The other is RHSS yarn I have had sitting around for several years and it will also be Granny squares 12 for my living room.

The scrappy one sqaures are almost done thats why I said I was cheating. I think I will Take it to the Rehab center my ML is in for an extra Lap robe she can keep as a pillow when she doiesn't need it.

Be blessed

Hi everyone! I'm new in the Pillowghan CAL. Well, technically, I joined a couple of weeks ago. But as of yesterday, I am officially "Crocheting-Along.":) I am making a "Spidey" Pillowghan. In blue and red (for Spiderman), for my nephew. I foresee making at least three more of these, (My two year old wants one, and so does my eight-year old...):) Then I will have to make one for the other nephew, so he doesn't get jealous of his cousins' spiderman blankets.:) so I will probably be in this CAL for a long time... I am using this: Daynas Crochet Spider Web Square (http://www.texasdg.net/daynascrochet/pattern.asp?id=75)

It came up blurry. I had to try about four times to get it to work (never done this before.)... It keeps coming up blurry. Sorry.

So far I have 3 squares done, I wish I had a digital camera to post a picture, but they are looking better than I thought they would. And are about nine inches wide. The bigger, the better (less squares I have to do.):)

Hi to everyone in the pillowghan CAL.
I am nwbondlady. The nw part of my handle is because I live in Vancouver, WA. :hi The bond part of my handle is because I own a bond knitting machine (about twenty years).
I have been crocheting for about thirty years, self taught and it is my most favorite thing to do. I do love knitting on my bond but I always finish and embellish my things with crochet. I love how versatile crochet is and how easily it can be adapted to almost anything you want to make.
I have made three pillowghans so far and think they make great gifts for everyone. The first two I made were for a wedding. I made them one for the house and one to be used in thier car.
I am not sure how to post pictures directly on here so I am putting the photobucket link to my pictures in here just in case the photo link doesn't work.

I'm happy you're about ready to begin....and since you are - I think I'll take you up on your offer and get another Pillowghan in the works. That square you chose looks really hard! You're MUCH braver than I!

I have a TON of scraps and such that I'd like to use the same pattern as before and just "wing it". It calls for two strands held together so that ought to use up quite a bit!

So count me in for No. 2!

After all this time I am still working on my pillowghan. I do have a question for you Becky... On the irish rose ghan How many of the roses do you make. If I read the directions correctly you need 16 rose squares to be sewed together as four in one big square to make four squares. But when folded into a pillow...it looks like to me there is only four sewed together to make one square. Do you understand what I'm asking? Your's was so pretty on the gallery! You all are doing a really beautiful job! And the colors are something else!

Hi I'd like to join the CAL pillowghan. I was bouncing around the board today and found this list. I have some blue yarn I was going to use for a blanket for my aunt. I think a pillowghan would make a great birthday gift for her. I'm going to look for some kind of granny square pattern now. -Jen

:welcome I'm so glad you're joining JEN! I have linked some patterns at the CAL gallery site here (http://www.ccrtc.com/members/mitzi/pillowghan.htm).

On a side note - I've been wanting to start a second pillowghan and think I've decided to do one for my sister's baby once she finds out the sex next month. I just ordered the Pillowghans for Baby book 2 and it's got some neat ones in it that look light and airy. They live near South Padre Island...so there's no need for a big heavy one like my first...

Thanks for the link Mitzi! I found a few 12 inch square patterns last night. I've started with a basic granny. I'm going to make a few of those combined with a few other patterns. I still haven't picked which ones I'm going to use, I have three more to read through. I've decided to make the afghan blue and white. I'm not sure that I have enough blue in the stash, so I'll add the white now. This way I won't get down to the end and find I've run out.Well, I'm off to crochet...

I have a question...I am doing 12 inch grannies for my pillowghan. Now, that said...If I do the 4 squares for the pocket, I'm going to have a 2' by 2' pillow. That is HUGE! Should I just make an over sized square (one) and then still put the ends on the original middle square? Does this make any sense at all? hahaha I guess what I'm saying is like a rectangular one so that the folded up piece will tuck inside.

Has anyone done this???

Chatty
March 22nd, 2005, 01:03 PM
I think it's supposed to be a 2x2 pillow so the ghan fits into it.

I'm trying something, will let everyone know how it goes.

RitziMitzi
March 22nd, 2005, 03:53 PM
I didn't do my pillowghan with squares, but if you're using the standard 12" square then your pillow should be a total of 4 squares, which is the size you stated. I guess I didn't think about it being very big that way. It should be 24 squares for the 'ghan and an additional 4 for the pillow. There's a little picture on this page (http://members.aol.com/crochetalong/pillowghans.html).:think That probably doesn't help - maybe someone who did the 12" squares will be able to help.

Ok. I just looked at the gallery page and Becky's afghan is only 3 squares across. If you do it that way then you would only need the one square to fold the afghan into. Hers didn't work out to be a 'pillowghan' exactly, but she still did the pillows. I can see how it would work, though. Three squares across would give your width 36" and then you could just make it as long as needed. I don't know if you'd run into problems trying to get it all to fit into the one square at the end, though. Probably couldn't be too long or it wouldn't work.

Thanks,

Hi Fran!

What I usually do is swipe the posted photos from the board here and upload them to my own photobucket account to host at my website for the CAL gallery. I get so much web space "free" with my service provider and I use that to host the gallery. So, if you'll post with the photo url's - I'll get that done ASAP!

Typically there are two photos per project - one of the ghan and then one of it folded into the pillow.

I'm looking forward to seeing your finished projects!:yay

I need to either learn how to count or something, every time I've tried to make this pineapple square I end up ripping back to the 3rd rnd cause somewhere I've made 5 tr instead of 6 :bang

Ok, I feel better now, maybe I'm making all my mistakes on the first go so the rest will be smooth. I hope this K hook makes the right size square.

I'm such an idiot. Yesterday I went up to the post office to send it, but I was going to just pay for it, then take it back home so I could wait and take a picture of it. (And wash the afghan, to get any dog hair off...) And wrap the things (There was a poncho, a Chelles' skull cup, a purse, and two doll outfits, too...) Well, the guy behind the counter said "If I put it in a box, I have to tape it up." (I don't like this guy... I've had him before.) I don't know why, but I let him tape it up. So... now I won't have a picture to show y'all. :cry I can see if I can get her to take a picture of it, but I highly doubt it will happen. I can barely get an email saying she got the package.... Sorry guys. I don't have a camera right now, anyway. (But I might be getting a digital camera in a couple of weeks.) I wanted to get it out to them, they live in Texas, and it's going to be getting hot there pretty soon. That's probably why I let him tape it up (besides the fact that he was scaring me.)...:scared

Good Luck with that K Hook, Chatty! Sometimes it just helps to put it aside for awhile and walk away. ;)

And Tina - I can't believe your post office! Mine has signs everywhere saying they will not tape anyone's box - that it's against the law now for the PO to do that. I've seen them refuse to tape boxes and say "I can only sell you tape now, I can't tape it for you". He seems to be running his own thing.

COngratulations on getting it finished, though! I'm real sorry not to see a picture as I'm sure it's beautiful!

I kept saying inside my head, "What is this guy, a Nazi or something?" (Maybe he's one of those crazy postal workers- not funny, but maybe it's true...):( They've let me pay for my box ahead of time, before, and take it back home as long as I didn't put anything else in it, and they checked it at the p.o. before I sent it again... I don't know. Maybe I should complain, or ask someone next tine I go in. I'm kind of disappointed. I wanted to wrap their gifts, and send some candy with it.... Oh well... I am glad I finished it, though, and I will probably be making another one, I have all the yarn to do it, so maybe I can take a picture of that one. (Maybe by then, I will have my digital camera!...)

I did put the square down last night since I was also tired. Me and hubby had spent the day changing a liner in a swimming pool so we were both tired.

I finished it this morning and it was still 11" so before I did :bang again a :idea hit me so I tried it and it worked.

I simply added another round. When I got to the end of the dc before the pineapple I ch 3 and dc in the sc on top of the pineapple. When I was finished I had a 12" square and my pineapples have a nice sharp point. I attached the yarn to my other square and added the rnd to that and ss the two squares together and they look great so that's how I'm doing it.

I'm happy now :yay

Edit: Here's a pic of the square so you can see what I did:

Fran - I've posted your pillowghan photos to the CAL gallery - it looks fantastic!

Chatty - The pineapple square looks perfect! You've done a fantastic job and I'm glad you were able to get the size worked out.

I received a new Pillowghan leaflet in the mail today from eBay. I wouldn't recommend this particular seller as I owed another $3.01 in postage when it finally arrived....but anyways - it's Leisure Arts #2485 "Pillowghans to Crochet" and it looks great! The 4 patterns inside are done in 15 1/2" squares and are put together 3 squares wide by 4 squares long. So, you only need one additional square to make the pillow, for a total of 13 squares. I'm thinking I'll try one of these for my next Pillowghan project as I won't be needing to make the baby one for my sister now.

Happy Easter to Everyone! I hope you all enjoy the weekend!

I have enjoyed so much going through all the notes about the pillowghans. I made mine almost 2 years ago with 18" granny squares of various colors and put together with white. I did not want just a plain pillow so put a ruffle border around the pillow square. I do not have a picture yet but will try to get one to send and post. To those who have not finished, keep working on it. The reward is so gratifying. :manyheart :hook Good luck to all of you.

In addition to adding an extra round to my pineapple square to get it to 12" I also got the bright idea of ending the last round with a ch 3 and sl st in the beg ch-3, that makes it much easier to stitch the squares together.

I have the pocket on mine, now all I have left is 4 more rows of squares to do to finish, then this is one is off to Oregon for a very special friend for his birthday.

My pineapple block is supposed to be 16x16 but I lost a row because I done my first ch 3's in the ch 1 spaces on the first row of the pineapple instead of in the dc's but it looks good
It looks alot like the one everyone is using only it has more rows.
I am not in the pillowgan along but I am making one if someone tells me where to put the pocket:)

Chatty
April 23rd, 2005, 10:06 PM
The pocket goes on the backside of the afghan in the middle of the bottom row, you put the right side of the square against the wrong side of the afghan so that when it's turned you have the right side of the square facing. If you're using one square for the pocket then you only need 3 squares across. If you're using a 2 x 2 square for the pocket then you need 4 squares in each row.

Alright missy....you asked for it!

This poor little crochet along hasn't had any love for so long......so after much deliberation over what kind of pillowghan to make next...squares...colors....I decided to do the same thing over again. That's logical, yes? I'm making another Pillowghan like I did before- the Star Pillowghan only instead of two strands of RH, I'm using one strand of LB Chunky in Nantucket. This stuff was on clearance at the almighty JoAnn's not too long ago and I got all they had.

It's coming along great and I do like it. I'm sure it will be going to charity as I'm betting once I get done with it, it will be cooling down. I'm already into the second skein of Chunky and it's nice stuff. Soft and squishy which is always therapeutic....

So, if you're still out there and working on your pillowghans, THANK YOU! And if you'd like to jump in - I'm still here. I've been in quite a funk lately and I apologize!

If I were to join this CAL is there a time frame for when a project needs to be completed? I am in a 12" exchange and plan to do a pillowghan from all the squares - but I don't have enough squares just yet.

Thoughs??

Hi Dawn! I'm going to go ahead and put your name with blog link on the CAL website! I love that more people are joining now - it seems as though once it starts to cool down our thoughts turn to afghans and pillowghans really are the best (and I say that objectively :blush )

I don't know if anyone is familiar with Crochet Legacy and Karen Whooley but she had an anniversary contest not too long ago and sent out a thing for charities where she'd design a pattern for your charity of choice and I submitted Project Linus. Well, anyways, that charity was chosen and so she asked all those that had chosen PL for a pattern idea and of course I said A PILLOWGHAN! I think a pillowghan would be perfect for a child who has been displaced to carry with them to a new foster home or wherever they're going (or home from the hospital, etc) - I haven't heard back if that idea was accepted or not - but it's out there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Well, I'm back to "work" - I'm trying to design a series of handmade notecards for the crochet world using my Wishblade (it's a die cut machine that works like a printer only is uses a blade) - so far I've made a template for a personalized crochet hook. Ok - too much OT.

have a great day!

I was thinking of making my brother a pillowghan for Christmas, so I'm thinking I'll join this CAL. I'll be making it in blue, green, yellow, and white. I really like Drew's "Cat Tracks" square, very masculine, and looks warm.

That sounds perfect, Antara! Thanks for joining - I'm so glad to have you! I'll get you added to the CAL website here shortly. Now to have a look at this square of Drew's! Is it in the 2006 calendar? (I just found it - it's on his Free Patterns page! awesome square!!)

Have fun with this project and post progress when you can! I'm looking forward to seeing how it comes along!:cheer

Thanks for the warm welcome! :) I decided to go with only blue and white, rather than a whole bunch of colors. I'm working on my first square, and loving it. It's a great pattern.

I just saw that this CAL is still going. :yay I have a few projects to finish first then I would love to be in this group. I have done a pillowghan once before and loved it. This will make some awesome gifts when complete, doing as a CAL makes it more fun one would think.:wink I have the patterns bookmarked. Now to decide which one to do first and the colors to do it. Hmmmmmm...:think

Welcome crothread! My favorite thing about the pillowghan is the pocket you get for your toes when it's opened into a blanket - toasty toes - the perfect gift! I'll get you added to the CAL website now and will look forward to seeing your progress!:)

I'm going to be adding links to 12" squares as ideas for pillowghans - the first one to be added to the site is The Crochet Dude's Cat Tracks square - in fact - many of his squares would make stunning pillowghans. And since my first pillowghan was a gift for hubby, I can personally attest to the fact that it's a great gift idea for the men in your lives!

Thanks for hooking up with the CAL!:hook
have fun!

I wasn't planning on starting yet, but last night I got the itch. I finnished 1 & 1/2 blocks. I chose to work the Pineapple square with RH Claret. I had it in my stash. I haven't decided if I want to work some of the squares in a lite pink to go with. May be slow going for awhile as I do have other projects waiting to be finnished. I need to get at least 2 made in time for Christmas, 1 for SIL and 1 for DH.

I would like to find sports oriented squares to assemble into a pillowghan. I'm hoping I can find enough of them. I'm running to the store today in search of patterns, yarn, and stuff :)

Believe it or not, I have never seen a pillowghan before! I am going to give it a try. I love 12" squares. I have a feeling the end sewing is where it will mess me up. BUT, I will give a yell when I get to that part!

are you all still doing this???

Absolutely! You can join anytime - finish anytime - use any pattern, colors...and make as many as you'd like! I'm on my second but haven't picked it up in awhile - have been sidetracked with scrapbooking and stamping....too many hobbies - so little time!

Anyways - jump in whenever you're ready - we'd love to have you!!!

:eek What? They're so much fun to do, Kay - you'll really enjoy it. And sewing the squares together is the worst - but it's not that bad. The good thing is that you have LESS squares to join when they are 12" each!! I had problems doing my first put together of squares - but it was fine once I got the hang of it and there is TONS of great help and tutorials here!!!

Ok I am the kind who likes to sew my rows together as I am doing them can someone help with a question on the "pillow" Sq where 2 sq are sewn together to make the pouch which end is open the end toward all the gahn or the edge?

RitziMitzi
November 11th, 2005, 09:48 AM
I made mine in one piece with the pillow square on top and it was open toward the afghan - the edge was lined up with the edge of the afghan and stitched together.

I hope this helps!
