Hi Everyone! :wave s
If you've been following along in the Thread topic, you know this has been coming, for everybody else, welcome to the party! I've started our first Thread CAL! :bad :cheer2 :clap :bounce
I've set up a blog for it at www.jinglelady.us/crochet/ (http://www.jinglelady.us/crochet/) and a gallery to show off our WIPs here (http://www.jinglelady.us/gallery/Thread-Crochet-a-Long).
I'm all excited to 1) be the host and 2) see what all we come up with.
Oh, so I should tell you what our project is....anything thread! A bookmark, a doilie, a table runner, thread poncho, whatever ( a whole bunch of patterns can be found
here (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php), just look under doily or bookmarks). Since so many of us are new to thread, we thought it would be best to leave the field open.
So, grab a small hook, pick up some thread, and join in the fun! If you're participating, just leave a comment on the blog (http://www.jinglelady.us/crochet/) or email me directly at crochet*DIE*SPAM*DIE* @ jinglelady.us with your website address and I'll link to you from the blog. :hug
I think I've covered everything. Right? :fc
Oh, you know to remove the *DIE*SPAM*DIE* from the email address above, right? :frog
Looking forward to crocheting with all of you fine ladies (and gents). :grouphug

I'm so excited!! I bought this book (http://www.leisurearts.com/crafts_needlework/item_detail.asp?rec_num=239&skill=KC#) at Wal-Mart yesterday and hope to do the doily on the cover for my main project. I also have a couple other ideas for smaller side projects to work on too.
Also, I think it's a great idea to set up a separate blog for the CAL. I subscribed to it with Bloglines so I'll be totally up to date at all times. :danc

I started a doily called "The Square Doily with Rose Center" this morning. The rose part is done and I'm now working on the lace part. :D!
I have two more doilies and one more secret project (It's going to be a gift for my good friend) picked out for this CAL. :bounce

Hi Ladies -
I have a question about the gallery I set up for our CAL. Anybody familiar with the Gallery package from Sourceforge?
I wanted to set up an account for each member of our CAL so they could upload photos there themselves, but it seems that these users have the ability to rename the album, change titles and existing photos. And do this for all albumns, not just the Thread CAL. :eek2 Obviously I just want the users to be able to upload their own photos to a specific album and only be able to change their own photos.
Any ideas? :shrug :thinking2
Thanks!
jingles96
January 8, 2005, 10:20 PM
Nevermind, I think I figured it out. The users only have access to the Thread CAL, but oddly enough the Gallery software seems to let any logged in user to re-order photos, rotate them, etc. I've disabled deletion of photos, so only I as the admin will be able to do that. Also, it allows any logged in user to rename the album URL. Not the title, but the url. Which also oddly enough is called "rename album", but it changes the physical url of the gallery, not the Title name of the Gallery. Yuck. But, alls I can do is ask people to NOT use this feature.
Not the perfect solution of what I want, but it's okay. I trust you ladies to not abuse another members photos. :star I'll be emailing out user accounts to people who left their email in the comments section of the blog (http://www.jinglelady.us/crochet/) tomorrow morning.
Good night! :zzz

Wow Anna, that's kind of scary. :sweat I'll be nervous if I go to upload a picture. :wink I am seriously itching to get started on the doily this minute, but I have another birthday project (thread too) to get out of the way first. :))

Hey, Anna ~ sorry I wasn't here earlier to help you out with Gallery. I use that software for my albums. I haven't added any users other than myself, so I haven't familiarized myself with figuring out what other users can do. If I find out a workaround to the URL issue, I'll let you know. :sweat

Donna - no problem. Please do let me know any tips/tricks you figure out. :angel
Ladies - I have emailed out usernames & passwords for the Thread CAL Gallery. Let me know if you don't receive it. Or if you want to join. Or if you're having problems uploading, etc.
How's everybody's project coming along? I've managed to do a round and a half on my doily so far. :blush

Can I play, too? :)) Just left a comment at the blog...
I'm making this Celtic bookmark (http://www.freepatterns.com/fp_pdfs/pre-database/crochet/celticbookmark.pdf) (warning--pdf file). It looks insanely complicated and I've never used thread that small before, but it looks too pretty not to try it! (I'm also midway through a beaded thread shawl that is (with any luck) going to be a birthday gift for my stepdaughter.)

So sorry about forgetting to go to the blog to leave a comment I was just soooooo excited about joining the group last night :bounce
I just emailed my son in Hawaii and my soon to be DL who lives in Japan a couple of tablecloth patterns .... I'll be making the tablecloth for a wedding present (not until this summer so that gives me plenty of time)
While I'm waiting to see what one they would like I'm going to start on a doily tonight .... The doily I picked is Calla Lily by House Of White Birches from there collective doily series I'll be doing it in ecru

Lydarose2 - Absolutely! I'll set your account up tomorrow too. Oh, and you are brave! That bookmark looks very intricate. Very lovely though.
Thanks for the button Mommiechickie! I'll add it to the blog tomorrow.

I've been having some technical difficulties with the Celtic bookmark, but I think I've got it under control now. I've been alternating between working on it and weaving in 200+ ends on a throw rug (I always end up leaving that til the end even though I know it would be easier to do it as I go along...)

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">I would have to say that so far my first experience with thread is going well. I had some problems with my project being kind of lopsided. Well I fixed that. It is amazing what can happen when a ch5 is missed! LOL! It is now starting to look more like the photo on the pattern page. I have not worked on it the last couple of days but with this nice long weekend I am hoping that I can finish it. I do have a question though. Are all thread projects supposed to be pinned and blocked when finished? Thanks.</span>

I just looked at your Things to Do with Yarn (http://julieh.topcities.com/Yarn.html) site. I :heart those first two bookmarks you have in the thread section. :wowdrool Where did you find the patterns for them?
Julie
January 15, 2005, 11:33 PM
Boy, I need to fix that page! The background doesn't show up and that just irritates me to no end. :ohdear :)) Both of those come from the 3 Dozen & One Bookmarks (http://www.purplekittyyarns.com/browseproducts/3-Dozen---One-Bookmarks.HTML) book by Annie's Attic. The book is still one of the few crochet books left at Walmart the last time I checked so it's pretty easy to find.

i'm still managing at least one row a night at work, but seeing as how my project is HUGE i've gotten about an eighth of it done LOL I'm hoping robert has to work this comming wednesday (my day off) so I can work on it here at home AND take a photo of the progress. For those who have seen the link, i'm almost to the top of the bottom "fancy stitches" with like 3 rows of that left to do (yeah i know, i'm not making much sense....i've only been awake about 30 minutes though) :camera to come soon!!

here is the beginning of my project, I have 2 more colors(I think) of squares. I'm attempting a poncho, but instead of just joing the squares I would like to attach them using a more open decorative stitch. I will probably just choose one from my crochet bible, but any suggestions?
I'm always hot and am looking for something I can wear with something layered underneath, but not pass out from heat exhaustion!:o

Sign me up! I just bought some Lavender and Mint colored thread and am going to be making a set of doilies for my mother for her birthday, which is March 27th.
I do need to find a pattern to settle on. Can't decide if I want them to be identical or just make 2 different ones out of the same colors. Or I could just make like one of those table toppers for her. She does have some of those round decorative tables. I know she plans on making herself a Christmas one, so I could provide her with a nice Easter/Springtime one =)
Anywho...will post pics once I get started.

I finished the doily I was making for this and while I was blocking it, decided to make a bookmark for an exchange I'm doing too!!!! Here they are. The doily is done in a deep red and was supposed to have white picot edging on it. I thought it looked more elegant without it so I left it off. It's also supposed to be more heart shaped, oh well!! I got the pattern out of a book of Heart doilies. The Bookmark is called "Trellis" and is from the Dozen and One Bookmarks book. I love that book BTW.

BTW that was Christopher's first pick when I sent them the long list of tablecloth's ..... I'll be getting all of the thread for it next paycheck then start working on the blocks
Yumi wants me to teach her how to crochet when she's here this summer ..... it will be alot of hands on teaching since she only speaks a little bit of English and I only know a few Japanese words ( she is taking English classes and will be done in June :cheer2 )

actually, i didn't spin this black. i bought it on ebay from mountain shadow ranch (http://stores.ebay.com/Mountain-Shadow-Ranch_W0QQsspagenameZl2QQtZkm) i won 5 hanks of handspun 3 purple and 2 black for only $5!
... but it did give me inspiration to spin this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/rebeccav/crochet/DSC01557.jpg
which will be my next bear :)h the whole time i was spinning it was saying to me "i'm cami, your next bear" :yes

I'm two days into my first big doily. I'm very thankful the pattern said it might ruffle, because might is an understatement in this case. I'm praying they are right when they say blocking will fix it, but I'm probably a week away from finishing it so this is going to be slow torture for me.

Julie -
the same thing happened to me before. :ohdear I couldn't go on looking at my ruffling doily which was supposed to be flat so I had to frog mine. I think blocking might fixed it, but I just couldn't stand it. :irked
By the way, I have another doily posted on my blog.:))

I love everyone's projects; they're so lovely!! :)h I can't wait to see the completed bear!
I'm making a table runner called "Floral Carpet" from an old Magic Crochet mag (Feb 1994). I'm using Royale Classic size 10 thread in various shades of yellow with variegated green for the edging, size 0 steel hook. It will look like a patch of marigolds. So far I have 8 white motifs done so it's going kinda slow. In the mean time I took a break and made a couple of bookmarks:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/Ithilien_Lady/YarnTales/bookmarks.jpg
They're from the "Three Dozen and One Bookmarks", except the corner bookmark is only 7 rows and I used an earring which lost its pair for the tassle. They're made of Royale Classic size 10 thread using size 7 steel hook. Making bookmarks is sort of my crochet instant gratification. :D!

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">I am so ready to be finished with my thread project. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/frown.gif" /> I only have 2 rounds to go! <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/dance.gif" /> The other day I was working on it and could not figure out what I was doing wrong. So I stopped mid-round. I picked it up again last night and decided to start the row over as I still could not figure out what I was doing. As I started it over I realized what I did wrong and was able to finish the round. Well I then started on the next to last round and realized that instead of 3trc I did 2trc. Once again I took out the ENTIRE round! I started on it again and was able to finish it. I have realized that I CANNOT watch TV while working on these patterns as I get easily distracted. So basically with the time I spent last night I could have probably finished the darn thing but ended up spending a couple of hours on just one round! Of course this has not stopped me from trying to find my next thread project. LOL!
One question I do have. My doily ruffles. Is it supposed to ruffle? How do I block it? Do I have to use starch? Do I just iron the back?
Thanks,</span>

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">Me again. I was wondering if anyone has seen any doilies that would be in a Southwestern type pattern? I am thinking if I make something square and a dark green (or other dark color) it could work. Any ideas?

I have finally decided on my next project. It appears to be quite detailed and the special stitches seem weird but I am sure I can do it......quick question though. as I am not familar with the steel thread hooks. Is a size 6 bigger or smaller than a size 7?
Thanks,</span>
Julie
January 31, 2005, 08:07 PM
The larger the number the smaller the hook. A size 0 is bigger than a size 10. Size 10s scare the you know what out of me so mine is still in the package. But I have one, does that count? :wink

Ok I started something else with out having finished the 1st thread project, but I got yelled at by my mom. I have been gathering remnant pieces of fleece to do crochet borders on . I got this bright yellow and then found this varigated rainbow and I just love it! it has one more round to go, but it goes really fast after the holes are measured and punched(I hate that part!) I'm doing them for Project Linus and my mom is after me to get them done so we can take all the ones she's made too.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/LanetteG/threadborder.jpg

Thanks! I just used a size 12 steel hook. I inherited all my grandmother's hooks a long time ago and there are 3 or4 of several sizes, so I just took the one that looked the worst( I don't want to ruin the ones I don't have to, she died when I was 6. It feels like she's guiding me along when I use them!)
Of course as I went along, Ihad to make some of the holes larger, but it worked out ok.

The bookmark is making me want to :bang so I'm moving along to the beaded shawl, which I really need to get finished anyway.
Oh, dang. I was going to link to the pattern I'm using to show you all, but the link is broken now. It's the one that used to be up at www.crochetmagazine.com (http://www.crochetmagazine.com) in their free patterns section, but it was listed under March I think, and now that section only goes back to may. Guess I'd better get in the habit of saving or printing anything I like from their free patterns section instead of just bookmarking!
Anyway, it's done in a fishnet-looking mesh pattern, with #10 thread and beads at the intersections of the mesh, and I think it'll be really pretty when it's done if I can convince it to lay flat :lol
I plan to get back to the bookmark after that, especially since hubby put in some brighter lighting in our bedroom, which is where I was working on the bookmark, and I think the less-than-great lighting we had in there before was half my problem--what with the #30 thread and the lighting I couldn't see what I was doing. (But the pattern is really complicated and I definitely kept doing something wrong...)

How neat your sister having the same name, is Yumi a common Japanese name? Yumi has already been to our house 3 times (she's come here with my son when he was home on leave) As soon as she walked in the door the first time I knew that she would fit right in with our family even though she couldn't really speak English it was in her smile and the twinkle in her eyes. Her and my daughter are really close I think it's because they were both really nervous and shy when Yumi first meet us they would cuddle and draw lots of pictures with words under them :D! We've only been emailing each other for about 7 months and boy can you tell her English is getting really good. Thanks for the offer of helping her out when she's here that's soooo nice of you I'll let her know that your there if she needs anything :D!

Dawn -
"is Yumi a common Japanese name?"
Yes and no. :D! Japanese names are mostly written in Chinese characters, and although it sounds exactly the same, when you look at the name written often times it looks completely different and means different too.
I was real shy and nervous too when I first met Hubby's parents. :blu Her English will improve in no time once she gets here, I'm sure! :))

Evelyn, Julie: Wow, those are beautiful! I hope I get that good with thread eventually :)
I've switched back to the beaded shawl since the bookmark was making me crazy and I got a couple more rows done on it yesterday. It's probably going to be a nuisance to starch--has anyone starched anything with beads in it? Am I likely to run into problems with needing to wipe the starch off the beads before they dry?
Other than that I'm waiting for my patience to return before I go back to the Celtic bookmark. I did about 3/4 of a cute pineapple bookmark last night, but it looks more like a mushroom :o

So excited! I finished a thread poncho for my daughter today. I don't have a pic yet but I can give you some of the specifics. I used size 3 thread with an E hook(that was the only one I could find at the time!) I based it loosely on this pattern web.************/web/20000124130523/http://www.cei.net/~vchisam/groovy/v-11.html (http://web.************/web/20000124130523/http://www.cei.net/~vchisam/groovy/v-11.html)
I had to make my starting chain longer and made some modifications on the mesh and left off the fringe. The thread color is tangerine(I love it!:)h ) and on the very last row I used RH Tiki in a varigated yellow/green/orange/pink just one row of sc. I made it for her to wear for Easter instead of another fancy dress she'll wear twice, I figured I could get something plain in pale green or yellow for her to wear under it. I'm so excited!:clap Picture to follow ASAP!

Thank you Evelyn and Stacey!
I can't wait to see the poncho Lanette!!
Stacey - has anyone starched anything with beads in it? Am I likely to run into problems with needing to wipe the starch off the beads before they dry?
I would use a glue based stiffener (Elmer's glue and water 1:1 ratio, or Stiffy from Plaid) to stiffen the bookmark. I use the Stiffy - Gently wash/rinse the project in water to rinse it clean. Blot the excess water on paper towels. Soak the project in the Stiffy or glue solution until it is fairly saturated. Blot the excess again on paper towels. It should be fairly easy to get most of the solution off the beads on the paper towels. The Stiffy in particular is pretty runny and easy to wipe off surfaces if I spill it. It will soak into the wet bookmark really easily without leaving a residue behind on the beads... I think! I would dilute the Stiffy quite a bit if you go with a product like that. The doily I just finished I diluted roughly 1 part Stiffy to 3 parts water. I didn't want a rock solid doily, but I did want to insure that humidity wouldn't ruffle that doily. It's stiff without being snowflake-stiff.
Stiffy (http://www.plaidonline.com/productDetail.asp?itemID=1550)
Maybe play with a couple of test swatches before you try to stiffen the bookmark, just to see what works best?
:thinking2
edited to add - the Stiffy, to me, seems pretty much like I would imagine a 1:1 glue to water solution would be. It's runny and smells just like white glue.

It just occurred to me that my latest project will qualify for the Thread CAL - so I'd love to sign up, too....
I'm making the Ballerina Barrette from the Feb '05 issue of Annie's Favorite Crochet magazine.
I'm using size 10 crochet cotton - that Royale stuff from Coats and Clark in a light pink and dark pink. It looks really pretty and will be for my daughter who is 3 and in Ballet this year. I thought if the project went well and wasn't too hard I would make some for all the girls to wear to their recital....but not going to commit to that yet.

Anna--beautiful bookmarks! I have a question for you--I made that one on the bottom a few months ago (I think, anyway, it looks just like it), and mine was really scrunchy/puffy on the ends before blocking (it was fine afterward, though). Was yours like that, too, or am I just weird? :p
Lanette--hope you get a picture to post soon! That sounds gorgeous!
(Edited, because Chie posted while I was typing up my post) Chie, that is so cute!
Julie--Thanks for the starching/stiffening advice! I've never starched anything other than using spray starch on bookmarks, so I'm a little nervous. One thing, though--it's actually the shawl I'm making that has the beads, not one of the bookmarks, so it needs to be stiffened enough to hold its shape but still be able to drape. Would glue still work for that if it's diluted enough (the pattern says "starch lightly"), or should I go with diluted liquid starch?
I should be able to come up with a swatch of the mesh pattern to test with pretty quickly. Especially if I leave the beads out of the equation, though I probably ought to put a few on there just to see what happens with them...
I saw that Celtic bookmark again yesterday when I was looking around for patterns and I decided it was too complicated for me.
It's probably too complicated for me, too :lol but I can't bring myself to give up on it. It's so pretty that I'm determined to finish it eventually. (It probably doesn't help that it's the first time I've ever used #30 thread.)
I've been project-hopping a lot the past few days and starting things at random--I started this pineapple square that I found in the Harmony 330 Crochet Stitches book. Mostly I started it because I couldn't figure out that pineapple-that-turned-into-a-mushroom bookmark. I think it'll come out nice, but I haven't gotten to the part of the pineapples where I screwed up the bookmark, so we'll see...

I've not ever used the liquid starch, unfortunately I can't answer. You used the S word, swatch. I'd swatch like crazy and try it both ways to see which you like better. With the beads, absolutely! That way you know you're working with the best solution and your preference, too.
I do think the glue would be the easiest to remove from the beads, without affecting the amount saturating the thread at all. :thinking1

Stacey -
The only weird thing about the edging for the bottom bookmark was trying to figure out what the pattern designer wanted me to do - she formulated it oddly. It's a simple dc cluster (keep the last loop on the hook for the first dc and then pull through all loops on hook on the second) though. I didn't block it at all.
Dawn - thanks. I actually found this thread in my Grandmother's house when we were going through it all last March (she passed away). I thought it could be used for crochet. Now of course I KNOW it's crochet thread. She had about 16 little balls of various colors all in a box with a $4 tag inside. She loved freebies and holding yard sales, so who knows if she actually ever used it or not. These balls of thread are what inspired me to start playing with doilies and bookmarks.
Anyway, it's Anchor brand, size 8. I have seen this brand in the store here in Germany, but like I said, I actually found it in my Grandma's house in Michigan last year.

I buy my thread either Walmart or Hobby Lobby usually. The Walmart near me doesn't have a great color selection except in Southmaid which I've heard doesn't hold up well (?) so I haven't tried that brand. But it's great for getting basic colors. Hobby Lobby I get to once a month or so when I go to the city, and they've got tons of colors of DMC Cebelia as well as the basics.
Pineapples--I'm working on a pineapple square right now, and it's coming along pretty well. But I tried a pineapple bookmark recently and it became a mushroom bookmark, which I frogged. The one I did was this one: www.crochetcrafts.net/Amy...okmark.pdf (http://www.crochetcrafts.net/Amy's%20Pineapple%20Bookmark.pdf) (pdf file). I think I was misreading the pattern because it got all wide and mushroomy instead of looking like the picture. The square I'm doing is much easier, but I'm going to try the bookmark again and try to figure out what I did wrong.
[eek! edited to change the link to the off-color t-shirt site to the link to the pineapple bookmark. oops, sorry!]

:wave Hi! I'm Gina and I'm pretty new to crochet. I've joined a few CAL's but this one intrigues me the most.
Wow! I just ***love*** :)h all the pretty creations I see posted! I don't know if I have the patience for creating doilies. So far I have created a snowflake, a cross that turned out a bit lopsided, and a little red rosette (to go on the cross). By the time I was finished with my cross I was about to go looney! However, I bought a book of thread crosses, bookmarks and baby booties that I really want to make as gifts so I need to get on this Thread CAL ASAP! ;) Actually, I joined at the site a few days ago and I just popped on over here to say hello to everyone.....and I need to comment again on all the **georgous** work I see here! I am just so amazed!
I also bought a little book called "Thread Crochet Beginner's Guide" that has lots of little projects in it and I think I'm going to give that doily a try. What can I say....you all inspire me!
So.....there you have it....you know the projects I'm going to be working on and I can't wait to get started and share with you too. How fun....I just love this CAL thing! :heart

Hi Jess,
It's a brand called Anchor. This is a German brand, but I found this thread in my Grandmothers house in Michigan when she passed away a year ago. I've also seen photos on other peoples blogs in the US where they had balls of it. So it's available somewhere in the US.
That said - I'd be HAPPY to pick up some thread for you here. They have lovely colors in the store I shop. Lots of verigated and non. Also in 8,10,20, and 80. (20 and 80 still scare me!). We could trade, or you could pay me. If you're interested. :)
Gina - welcome! I look forward to seeing your finished objects! :D

I bought the Dainty Little Doilies (http://www.purplekittyyarns.com/browseproducts/Dainty-Little-Doilies.HTML) book at Michaels this evening. Thanks for all the encouragement and tips!! After browsing the huge selection of thread patterns on CPC today, I think after I finish this first doily, I will be doing coasters for the appliques on my jacket. I'm in love with all the beautiful coaster patterns available!! And now I'm feeling the need to go thread shopping. I just realized I only have 2 thread hooks: a size 8 and a 9. I'm using my E hook for the doily though. I crochet very tightly. Some totally unsolicited advice :p
I used to have really severe carpal tunnel in my right wrist (from doing data entry--I crochet left-handed). I switched doctors at one point, and the first time I saw the new doctor about it he told me I was headed for surgery in the next six months or so if it didn't improve, and then he told me about some studies that had been done showing that a good percentage of people with CTS have a big improvement after taking B vitamins for a few months. I started taking one of those B-100 supplements, and it took a few months but eventually things improved drastically. I ended up not needing surgery, and now it only flares up once in a while when I don't take good care of it.
It doesn't work for everyone, but the vitamins are pretty cheap so it's worth a try for anyone having a lot of problems with carpal tunnel...

Thanks for the reminder Stacy! I used to take B vitamins back when I had a personal trainer but can't afford one now and I forgot how much better they make me feel all around. I'll have to pick some up this weekend.

Thanks!
It's far simpler and quicker than it looks. Mine is larger (about 16" at it's widest point) than it is "supposed" to be, b/c I stick to my largest steel hook.

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">Thank you to everyone that responded to my questions about where to buy colored thread. The only stores I have been to in town are JoAnn's and Michael's and their colors are very limited. I never venture into Wal-Mart. <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/yuck.gif" />
Mitzi - I love your ballerina barrette. It is adorable. All the other girls will be so jealous they don't have one. *Ü*
Michelle - Very nice doily. I am thinking now that I have those exact colors, maybe I should make it too. LOL!</span>

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">I have completed another thread project. It is not the one I planned to do but one I decided to do on the side for a gift. I had fun using colored thread for the first time. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/pig.gif" />

If you cannot see the picture, I do have it up at my site and will add to the thread gallery soon.
Thanks for looking.</span>

Finally my entry!
I made a poncho froom some tangerine colored thread for my daughter for Easter.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/LanetteG/threadalongponcho.jpg
Of course I did thid completely backwards, I should have found the dress then picked the color, but sometimes I just get sucked in by a color. And I was in love with the color of RH Tiki that I found, Cheery. So I also made a matching headband!

Lanette, your daughter is so cute! The poncho and headband are beautiful :))
I have the beaded shawl all stitched up, just need to starch and block it tonight and then do the tassels :bounce It is, in theory, supposed to be done by tomorrow when we go to visit Sara (my stepdaughter--her birthday was a couple of days ago), but it just ain't gonna happen, so I'll have to save it for next time we see her. (She's away at college, but it's only about an hour to an hour and a half away so we manage to see her about once a month or so.)
And I'm making this wall hanging thing out of four pineapple squares to go inside the door of this glass cabinet we have. The door is backed with pretty wrapping paper so as to hide the clutter :) and the top half has got a beautiful embroidered piece that Sara made hanging inside it, but the bottom is crying out for something to decorate it, so I'm giving this a try. I have two of the four squares done, and my plan to join them in middle of the v-stitches in the last round is actually working! Yay!

Hi Anna! I left a message on your blog....I've decided to join my first CAL. I've been working with nothing but thread anyway. Learned to crochet using thread as well. I'm trying to finish a variegated thread halter and skirt for my best friend's daughter whose birthday is this Saturday. Will post a picture soon as it's finished. Also, I'm halfway through with my SIL's poncho using Sutty's flower st. with lattice also in variegated thread but this time in blue. :))

Help!
I need tips for crocheting looser - this one was to be 7½ inches and is only 5½ inches across. This is after going up two hook sizes because I know I crochet tightly. Any suggestions?

Julie, I am going to be looking to see what people say because I have the same problem!
Even if it is smaller than expected, that looks gorgeous! :)h
I started working on a doily today and checked my gauge against the pattern. After three rounds, it was supposed to be 1.75" across. Mine? 1.25" across. This is after I went up two hook sizes and actively spent those three rounds trying to crochet more loosely... only to feel like what I did accomplish looked icky. :(
Just commiserating! G'luck!

Jess, by my standards that's pretty darn good!
Mine was to be 3¼ inches after five rounds. I was lucky to hit 2 inches at that point. :oops

this is just a total thread newbie talking but maybe you could try doubling your thread and see if you get closer to gauge? Or just use a different size thread?

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">Sorry Julie. I have no idea on how to make it looser. It will be interesting to see what others suggest.
On another note.......is there such a thing as an oval doily? And if so where can I find a pattern?
Thanks,</span>

Stefani - I saw you posted about an oval doily earlier... it's been in the back of my mind to hunt a link for you, I know I've seen some. Let me hunt in the morning, it's late here but I'll definitely track some down for you tomorrow. I love a good doily hunt. :hyper

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">Oh Thank you! Thank you! I have been looking but so far have only found a couple. I want to make this for the top of my jewlery chest and since it has a square top and round doily is not going to cut it.
Thanks again.</span>

Here are a few, you may have seen them before:
Buffet Blossoms (http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/BuffetBlossoms.html)
Oval Elegance (http://www.denisecrochets.com/oval-elegance.html)
Oval Pineapple with and without ruffle (http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Ovalruffpine.html)
Oval Ruffled (http://www.crochettreasures.com/ezine/ovalruffle2.htm)
Those are free, there are more that come up when I did a google search for 'oval doily crochet patterns'. I've found quite a few in books and on pay sites online, gosh there are some gorgeous ones in some of the books.
Hope this helps! :fc

Julie, I have the same trouble with thread. With yarn I crochet pretty tightly & usually have to go up about two hook sizes, but with thread it seems even more pronounced. I haven't found any way around it but to use a bigger hook, though, since trying to crochet looser doesn't seem to produce very good results for me (also it's very slow that way & I tend to tighten up again without meaning to). I always start out 2 sizes bigger than what the pattern calls for, but sometimes have to go up more. The beaded shawl called for a #8 hook, and I could only get the gauge right with a #4. If I'd used the #8 I would've made a baby shawl :lol
I wonder if using size 8 thread instead of size 10 might help? I haven't tried it, though...

Thank you sooo much Julie!
Sigh - work has been crazy lately and while I had time this weekend - I was too busy just relaxing and putzing around the house. Oh, and crocheting. :) I totally forgot. Let me go do the account now while I'm thinking about it.

I apologize everybody. Work has been crazy the last couple of weeks and when I'm not working, I'm trying recover and de-stress from it. Tonight was another perfect example - 30 mins before "closing" time we got a panicy email from the customer. We spent 2 hours just looking at the data and trying to figure out what the problem was. Another hour of coming up with a fix for it and another two hours babysitting the fix - I left work at 12:30am (it's 3am now). :blah ARGH.
So, I've just sent jaclim her new username and LanetteG a reminder of her username. Could those of you who are (patiently) waiting for me to create a Gallery username let me know? Either sent me an ezinbox mail or an email at crochet [at] jinglelady.us. Thanks for putting up with me.:blush

Anna: don't worry about it! we've all had days/weeks/months like that! I can certainly relate (especially with where my current job is and customers changing their minds and me having to redesign database structures and all kinds of fun stuff).
Thank you for doing everything you do for the CAL! :D!
