View Full Version : Crochet Along...little blankies!

I hope that it's okay for me to start this thread...if not I trust that the moderators will let me know. Please let me apologize in advance if someone already has one started here somewhere!
my passion is blankets for kids. I love to make all sizes...starting with travel sized comfort blankies all the way up to big kids afghans. I have donated them in the past mostly to pediatric oncology wards but I hope to branch out there. Family and friends and I donated a bunch with books along with them and they were a huge hit with the hospital staff, who even gave them to kids who were having a rough chemo start or IV trouble. One social worker said that as soon as he gave one of our blankets to a child who was having their first chemo that they curled up with it and fell asleep while their mom read them the storybook we sent along with it! That inspired me to keep going.
So, if you want to crochet along little blankies...for animal shelters...for preemies...for kids hospitals, let me know! I will work on a button as soon as I can.

Ro check out the how bout a charity crochet along post. Look at the 16th reply. Holly outlined in what quarter we make what. I think it goes right along with what you're allready making.
Edited to say I'm not telling you not to do this :) I just thought maybe you hadn't seen the other charity along thread.

Thank you Alisha!
I like to work on more than one project at a time year round if that's okay...I've administrated crochet groups before but I don't know if there are rules to this 'crochet along' thing as I've never done it this way!:blush
I will definitely check out the other thread and in the meantime leave this one here in case anyone wants to talk about making blankets of all sizes...maybe I can do that and also participate in the other crochet along too? If it'll mess up what is already going on around the forum here I will just keep working on my own on it, I don't want to bug anybody! I don't want to become Crochetville's village idiot LOL :eek2
I'm figuring how things work here as I go along and I will definitely be making more hats and installing the button for the hat-along on my blog soon as I get a second!
Hugs and thanks again
Ro
*edited* to add ah, I read the other thread, I see now! You guys plan on doing blankies in the second quarter. That's cool! I'll just keep on doing my thing on my own then in addition to the CAL.

Hi! I wanted to let you know that a general CAL for blankets is a wonderful idea! Please feel free to start one and I'd love to see a button! :) You can get an idea of how the crochetalongs have been working here by visiting the other threads. Usually, the organizer creates a gallery of the finished projects and keeps up with the thread.
A general blankie thread would be great for an ongoing CAL for anyone who is about to start a little blankie for any reason. That way, one can join the Charityalong and this one if they'd like. :)

Woo hoo! K, I would love to Tiff!
I have one button but I am working on a couple more too.
This will help me too to keep track of how many I'm making and where they're going cause I've gotten bad about that in the past couple months and I haven't kept track since the 5 blankets I sent to the Cleveland Clinic over Christmas.
Right now...I have a yellow TLC Lustre blankie on my crochenit hook (cable) and I have to get started on another, I just did a couple preemie sized ones and am working on getting some hat patterns up on the web (patterns I wrote a couple years ago) but I will definitely keep up this thread, thanks so much again Tiff! :)
Here's the first button, more to come!

When I get done with hats and things settle down, I might join in on this one. I love making little baby things but don't know anyone who is having a baby any time in the near future. At least this way I'll be able to play. :))

I have just started one for a friend and have another to do after that so I'd love to join if it's not strictly for charity.

I like the idea of keeping it in general, not just for charities, so it would keep this CAL open to everyone to join in making little things. Plus, that way it keeps it separate from the Charity-along. :)

February 11, 2005, 12:20 PM
I think this is a great idea, Ro! :clap I love making little blankies! :)h And I don't think it will in any way detract from the 2nd quarter of the Charity-Along, so roll with it! :cheer2
Ro
February 11, 2005, 06:11 PM
It doesn't have to be just for charity...I'm inspired by people making blankies regardless if they're gifts or for charity! Mine will mostly be for charity but I do have a couple baby gifts I really need to get going on!
Thanks yarntomato for the endorsement too, I do not want to interfere with the other charity-along schedule by any means, will be contributing to that too I just love having a special place for blankie discussion!
So join in folks even if your blankies aren't for charity...or if they are and no matter which charity they're for, please! The more the merrier :cloud9

I got a couple different buttons done! A couple charity versions and regular blanket along versions. Use and enjoy if you're so inclined! :)h please remember to save them to your own webspace before using or linking so Homestead doesn't send Big Guido to come knocking at my door for more money to 'make with the bandwidth' :rollin

Hi, Ro:
I appreciate your heart for making blankets for charity. :cheer2 I'm the same way--I've made a few quilts for our local crisis pregnancy center. I decided this year that I'd like to always have a quilt and/or crochet blanket project ongoing to donate to charity, and I'd like to donate at least one a month (alread behind!!). :ohdear
I enjoyed reading your blog also--I'm praying for you and your situations.
I wondered if you or others had heard that Saturday February 19 is "National Make a Blanket Day 2005." Here's the link:
www.projectlinus.org/mabd.htm (http://www.projectlinus.org/mabd.htm)
This is being sponsored by Project Linus and Janome. Project Linus accepts not just quilts, but also knitted and crocheted blankets for needy children. It might be a fun day for people to get together and work on some blanket projects together. You could donate to a Project Linus in your area, or any charity of your choosing. I'm hoping to get together with my quilting friends, but if that's not possible, I'm still going to dedicate the day to working on a blanket for my local pregnancy clinic.
Anyway, I think your blankie-along is a great idea!

Hi Donna! :)
I didn't know that about Blankie day!!! Now there is a holiday I can get behind with all my heart :cloud9 It will be fun, hopefully I can get at least one blankie done in honor of that day and perhaps find a Project Linus in my area if there is one to send to!
hope this post makes sense i'm multitasking which is never good for me LOL thanks for your prayers and concern, I'm hanging in there and I appreciate it!
I got soooo many pretty new blankie ideas this weekend from new books I got at Michaels and a couple ideas I have floating around in my head too that I have to try...will keep you all posted and post pictures soon as I can! I finished proofing the hat patterns:garden that I needed to do so i could post them so now in the next couple days I can go back to blankies for awhile!
back soon!

Today I hope to start on my first blanket for the blankie-along!
Please forgive my brain stalling out (it does that!) I can't remember who it was but somebody here had a beautiful round baby blanket picture in their blog and linked it to this website:
Round Ripple baby blanket (http://web.************/web/20021003082720/http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/angelcrafts/roundripple.html)
and I am totally inspired to try my first round blanket! It looks so gorgeous. So to the person who posted that, thank you, your work is so gorgeous, thank you!!! Again I apologize I have been checking out so many blogs I can't begin to remember whose it was in.
I will be working on charity blankies at the same time along with this one but if this one turns out it will be a gift. If it doesn't turn out, I'll give it to my cat LOL. I have so many gorgeous new blanket patterns from my trip to Michaels (who had just restocked their crochet books!) that I am just a deer in the headlights, so many gorgeous patterns I don't know which to do first! I can't wait to see what beautiful blankets you all come up with as we go.

I like this blanket, its from a pattern book, with a 4 or 5 differnt designs in it, this pic is just one of them. There are puppys, turtles, frogs, kitties, & bears I think.. I'll hafta find it & share it, but they make wonderful warm kids blankies!!

Oooh! Oooh! I want in! LOL
I made a blankie for my brother's baby (due in May/June) and now I'm working on a pink and purple one since we know that it's a girl now (though I knew all along... bwahaha).
I've got another one that I started too... I like the idea of making them for kids oncology units, especially since my family just went through the whole cancer thing recently.
Back to cruising around... :bounce

Hi Anne, welcome aboard!
I have to go blog about this in a minute but I just wanted to say that I started the round baby blanket last night at last (thanks Jewels!) and I LOVE IT! No joining, no rows to make uneven, it's like making a ginormous hat and that, I love!!! :)h
I think that I could crank these babies out at quite a rate once I get going. They are just so cool!!!
So happy to have you join us on our blankie adventures, Anne! I am sorry to hear that you had to deal with cancer in your family, we have had to in ours too (not a child but still hard) and have seen with my own eyes and heard time and again from hospital staff that the kids getting chemo are so effected in a positive way by having a blankie with them during treatment. They take them to and from home, hug them during scary tests, take them into surgery with them...
the benefits are endless, just from a little blankie made with lots of love.

Okay, I'm in on this one now. I will get started on a few blankets this weekend.
Ro-how big should the blankies be????
Ro
February 21, 2005, 04:34 PM
Hi Deneen! I saw your gorgeous preemie blankie on your blog, just perfect :)h
The blankies can be any size...from preemie to a travel size 'comfort' blanket for a toddler (I make those about 20X20 if square) to all the way up to full size for a teen or adult. If people make em and don't know where to send em, I can help with facility names and addresses!
Thanks again to everyone who is participating in this CAL, I'm :cloud9 so inspired by you all! I almost have my first CAL blankie finished, will post pics soon!
hugs and thanks!

Hi everybody,
Well here it is, the first charity blankie I did for this CAL!
http://www.psf.homestead.com/Picture_562.jpg
It measures 28"X28" square. I think I'm going to send it to the Cleveland Clinic when I get another batch together :) I'm making a hat to go with it (to go along with the hat CAL too :)
I've got a web page ready to display blankies that people make for the CAL, I'll do a charity section and a non-charity section. So let me know where pics of your work for the CAL are posted and with your permission I will save them and put them up for everyone to admire, if you want to share! :)
Natalie, CS Mott Children's hospital in Ann Arbor is one place in MI I have sent blankets before. I have also been thinking about finding out if Children's Hospital wants some...will keep you posted on my progress finding out. Just let me know if you want the address for Mott, I have it :) Or if you happen to go to Ann Arbor and want to drop them off in person I know where to do that too.

Stacy, it's so gorgeous!!! Can I put the picture in the photo gallery?
Natalie I already got this response from Children's Hospital:
Thank you so very much for remembering Children’s Hospital of Michigan! We would love to accept your gift of blankets and hats.
"Children’s Hospital gladly accepts seasonal new and gently used clothing items. All wearable items, including blankets and hats support our Clothes Closet which is a clothing resource for patients and families in need. Several individuals and community groups donate handmade items that include quilts, blankets, caps, etc. You will receive a receipt letter that is suitable for tax deduction purposes.
Community support is so important to Children’s, and is deeply appreciated!
Thank you!"
They likely are much more in need of the donations than Mott for a couple reasons, firstly, Children's is in a very poor area (Downtown Detroit) and they are a bigger facility (though Mott is building an entire new hospital right now). Secondly, Mott gets a lot of U of M Alumni donations and such and so I think that I will send a batch of blankets to Children's! Hats too. Heck who knows, I might even end up making them some mittens if I can get motivated to do so (they're not my favorite thing to make but they're soooo cute).
Don't know how much crocheting I'll get done today my daughter and I are on a closet cleaning mission but I hope to start my sunshine round ripple blankie or perhaps work a little more on the one I already started that is for a gift. Will keep you all posted!

Hi:
I love this blankie crochet-along!. I'm still plugging away on my giant granny square blankie, and it's now about 20X20".
I noticed on the Project Linus website:
www.projectlinus.org/ (http://www.projectlinus.org/)
that there is a pattern for a crocheted blanket that they describe as a nurse's favorite because there are no holes to catch medical equipment on (or probably little fingers or toes). I hadn't thought of that before. Unfortunately, there's no picture of what the finished blanket looks like.
Also, does anyone have a favorite yarn they use for preemie blankets? :? Their skin must be so sensitive. I'm using two strands of Lion Brand Baby Soft, which is soft, but maybe not soft enough for a preemie (maybe I crochet too tightly?). I just wondered if anyone has any advice for preemie blankies that are soft and not likely to cause any allergic reactions.
Thanks--Donna L. :heart

Hi Donna!
I like to use Caron Simply Soft baby and also TLC baby. I also like Cotton Tots by Bernat (softest yarn ever) but it's 100% cotton and I think it might be too heavy for little preemies.
Keep up the great work!
You too Natalie, keep up the fantastic work! I have to catch up to you and Deneen! LOL

Hi, I love making baby blankies too. I usually make them for people I work with. I just finished a baby set for my sister, and no, don't have pic yet, but will very soon. I finished a banana colored one in simply soft for my boss and his wife. They have a new baby girl. When I washed it up, it turned out so soft and they loved that it was made just for her. Another girl I work with finds out this week what she will be having. Keeps me busy! Unfortunately, I fall in love with them and have a hard time letting them go! I put them aside for "maybe someday!" ha! My favorite yarn is the Simply Soft, but I can get super good prices on it because I can buy samples. That sometimes bites me though if I don't have enough to get me to the end of my project! I have had to do some creative finishing before! I will work on getting some pictures to post.

I am currently working on a round lace one. Don't know who that is for yet. Might be for the girl at work if she has a baby girl. I am not sure yet. I have another pastel one I am working on in Simply Soft. Don't know where that one will go either.
Does anyone have the link for the star? I like it too!

Hi Jessie! :) can I ask, is the round lace blanket pattern on the web or if its in a book, can you tell me the name of the book? I'm loving working on blankets in the round and plan to try to find all the round blanket patterns that I can!
Major inspiration alert: If you don't watch Extreme Makeover Home Edition, check out their website at ABC.com about a little girl named Kassandra. She totally inspired my family and won our hearts! I talked to Volunteer Services at UMC Tucson where she gets treatments and I want to make them some blankets and send some books too (didn't tell them about the books want them to be a surprise!) I can't wait to get started...I have to haul through finishing the baby blanket gifts I'm working on edging and then dive head first into this UMC blanket drive! I just wanted to hug that little girl all day long.
There's a "How'd they do that" episode of the show on tonight...if you need to feel inspired you should check it out! I'm totally full of energy for it! (of course, that energy could also come from eating (you read that right) too many coffee beans. I know, don't say it. I'm weird...I have to find some chocolate covered ones. They're a delicacy, you know! LOL
xoxo to my blankie buddies!

Ro, I received the pattern from my step mom. I am not sure where it came from, but I called her tonight and she got it from a lady at work. She will ask her tomorrow and see if we can track down the source of the pattern for you. There are no markings on it, so I don't even know if it is from a magazine or a book or what. As soon as I find out, I will let you know.
Not sure if I can send it to you when I am done with it or if that would be against policy or what.

Natalie I love that color! I think the SS will soften up really nicely. I made my first baby afghan with it and even after just one washing I noticed a difference. I've also heard other people says it softens up.
As far as I know Marine_Wife and Chatty this is an ongoing Crochet-along. lol, I'm too slow for deadlines myself so I avoid them. I've only finished one blanket so far but some of the others have finished many...:clap

Thanks everyone for all the nice compliments! I really love this color too, didn't know what I wanted to do with it when I bought it - but I saw "ocean" and thought ripple... and I'm happy with my decision, lol!
Although Ro's the authority on this thread, as far as I know anyone who's making a small blankie can join the CAL, no time or pattern restraints, and they can be a gift or for charity...
My sets will be donated to the Children's Hospital in Detroit, MI...

Stacy, your blanket is gorgeous!! The colors are wonderful!
I'm a new crocheter, and I can't tell yet how things are made by looking at the picture. How did you do the edging?
Again, great job! :cheer

Hi, Donna! Thanks. The edging is just single crochets all the way around. Very simple.

Hi everybody!
Well I'm just about finished with the baby gifts I have been working on and I want to do some more charity blankets!
Anyone want to join me in a drive to make blankets for UMC Arizona in honor of this little girl (http://www.lovecomesfirst.com/index.html)? If you want to donate a blanket, even just a big granny square, drop me a PM or an email and I will give you the details!
big hugs and happy blankie-ing! :hook

Ro that's a GREAT idea. I am part of a MOMS Club and one of our members has a son diagnosed with that same condition. He is currently doing well but they have fought a very long and tough battle. I definitely want to help with this one.
Oops, I was mistaken. Our MOMS Club members son was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma which is a cancer of the brain. I'd still love to help out with this though.

Question for Ro - I just started work on a pretty purple blankie made from a linen/cotton blend yarn, do you think that would be appropriate to send to Ariz.?
BTW - the sc ripple is dead, frogged, and reborn as simple granny ghan. Just have to finish the edge, which I can't believe I didn't do tonight, and make a hat to go along with it.

Hey N (did you see on my blog, I'm giving all my crochetville buds one letter nicknames like the Men in black? LOL) that sounds gorgeous and I am sure they would love to have it at UMC! I'm sure that they will match it up with just the right child for it.
I can't wait to see what it looks like. Great work everyone on all the pretty blankies!
Just should probably post this here too in case anybody missed it (I know Nat already saw it :) I made a toddler and micropreemie version of the butterfly blanket I've been working on and the patterns are up. They work up quick and come out pretty cute! The patterns are linked here http://www.psf.homestead.com/butterflies.html
I just discovered a WONDERFUL no-quota, no demands, tons of info and helpful patterns group online called Care Wear Volunteers (http://www.carewear.org)that I cannot say enough about! If you need a hospital in your state to donate little blankies or preemie stuff to, check out their site, they have TONS of links by state! I will be putting info up about this group on the PSF website too, they asked to put some of my hat patterns in their next newsletter :)
Blankie on, people!

I just found out our Humane society accepts snuggles so I'll be using up my yarn that I can't use for anything else on the star blankie and donate them.

I finished a couple more snuggles the other day & think I listed the pics on the wrong thread. I wanted to tell you though, I am so excited, I was at Petco yesterday & found the group I am going to give the snuggles to. It is a group called e-rescue. They only rescue animals from the pound (ones on "death row") They never put animals down & they need snuggles so bad. They are even really close to my house. :cheer Yeah!!!!!:cheer

Hi ladies! Are we still participating in this CAL? I am making another blanket and will be posting it when I'm finished. I'm not very good about making them quickly but I am making some.

Yes, we are. I think since it's gotten so hot, we've shifted to some other items. I know I plan to start making more soon.
