I wanted to try to do a crochet along after the holidays. :flake Since I love ripple afghans I was wondering if anyone would be interested in trying a ripple afghan crochet along. Has there been one before?? And can I just start one? Or is there something special I have to do first? :?
You can go to post #56 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=7701&postcount=56) for pattern ideas
***** Please note that this Crochet along was started at the beginning of 2005. But that doesn't mean that you can't join at anytime. This thread will continue as long as there is interest from members. You can make any ripple pattern you want. It doesn't have to be a blanket. Just post your progress or if you need help. Reading the lastest posts I see that a lot of the new members that think this is just starting but it is a join any time kind of thing. I can't believe that there has been so much interest in this crochet along for a year! **** :yay

What if you made it just a "Ripple Along" so that if someone didn't have the time or resources for a whole afghan, they could make something else as long as it was rippled? I know I've already committed to the 63 square afghan and a star afghan after the holidays so I can't plan on any more till those are done. But I could do something like a ripple hat or purse or maybe even a poncho. Actually I just remembered, I'm planning a rippled sweater jacket for my daughter's birthday in January. Just my :twocents

I love ripple afghans & ripple anything, actually! I think I'm in the middle of making 3 ripple afghans for the pet shelter. They aren't all that big... I was planning on trying to design a ripple bag soon, so I'm up for a ripple along.

OK I was thinking that what would happen is that I can post a pattern for like a simple ripple afghan and who ever wants to learn to do a ripple or do something simple could do that with me. If you want to live on the crochet edge you can do whatever you want like Three olive who is going to make some awesome gloves (see her post above) :not I was thinking that I could make a page for picture posting or that we could start a yahoo group for discussing and help. I will have all the detaill after the first of the year so that everyone can get through new year's eve :yay

I've changed my mind. The scarf just isn't doing anything for me, so instead I'm going to do a ghan for my kiddo. I have a scarp ghan book that has a ripple pattern that I've used several times before with success so I think I'll use that one. I'll have to dig out the book then I'll post it's title and stuff.

Ok we offically start the ripple CAL on Jan. 1st. If you haven't already picked a pattern, you can do a google search for crocheted ripple afghans or just ripple and I am sure that you will find more than enough free patterns to choose from. Or you can buy a book. There are plenty to choose from that are full of ripple patterns. I will post some tomorrow when I have more time. I am going to get my yarn for mine tomorrow. I think that I am going to go with Bernat baby. I really liked the colors and ombre. I am going to use 3 different colors. I will keep you posted. :wowdrool

Bernat Baby Softee is what I'm going to use too. I have used it for many baby blankets. It's soft and durable.
The afghan will be a duplication of a ripple afghan that this lady's great grandmother made for her. She wants it for her second grandchild (a girl) who is due in February, so I need to start very soon.

SusanB's easy ripple afghan is sooo quick and fun. That's what I used to make my mom's backseat afghan that I had posted in FO. It's one of those patterns that you don't even have to count or watch. It's so easy and works up beautifully!!!
I'm tempted to do the socks too but really want to make something for our house. Still waiting for the yarn to come in :)

Hopefully you can see how the pattern repeats - I had to learn a new stitch called "Pebble Stitch" and it's in the purple color so you can't really see how pretty it is at all.

here's some photos of my ripple ghan....they aren't very good, my digicam batteries are gone...and even if they were'nt its dark out so i couldn't take a photo if i wanted to LOL I'm using RHSS in camo varigated, and in Black. Has anyone else experienced RH solids being thicker weight than the "same weight" varigated, or have I just stumbled upon a thick skien? There is a photo of hubby in the door way trying to show how long the blanket is going to be...BUT with my webcam I couldn't get the shot...i'm 5ft 2 and it comes up to my neck while touching the floor, so its a bit larger than "crib" length.

WOW! I think everyone's projects are coming along really nicely!
Mine is driving me crazy....there is a row (that emerald green color) that is just slip stitched and then the next row calls for you to go into the back loop of the previous row before the slip stitch. It's HARD to get in that spot and my hands are flat out killing me. This will really be a labor of love - but I think it's too pretty to stop....
Great Job everyone!

The yarn is driving me crazy,<img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/TearHair.gif" /> it is <a href="http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=lulu&SPP=999" target="_new">Bernat LULU</a> in Snowball and Busy blues. I can't see my stitches... I have to "feel" it. The first row is the worst the following ones are easier... a new skill to acquire needs patience; crochet with closed eyes!?! I will have to do it a few times since I have to work 6 to 8 strips.
But it will be so pretty is is worth going crazy, I am with you on that Mitzi, your looks lovely.

Mitzi,
I was just thinking, since you only have that row in green slip stiches, why don't you just do it after the row of back loops?
It seams possible in theory, I am not sure for the practice... Let me know
Good luck

I didn't want to jump the gun and start revealing anything before everyone else. I know it's going to take those that are doing afghans much longer than those of us doing socks. I've completed one whole sock (need to weave in the ends) and need to start the other. Unfortunately, I'm the type that once I feel I've "mastered" a pattern, I'm ready to take on the next challenge. I'm going to have to MAKE myself finish that second sock (LOL).
It wasn't that hard to do, but I did have to frog once.
I will try to take a picture of the one sock this weekend and post it here. :juggle

I've decided to work on my daughter's rippled coat I promised her for her birthday which is tomorrow. I'm designing it as I go and I don't have a pic but I can tell you I'm using RH SS in Farmland, doubled, using graduated sizes in hooks from K to P. It's gonna have a shawl collar & cuffs in Chocolate & copper(mixed) fun fur and one button up by the collar when I'm done. She also has a clip-on silk mum to put on it. Oh and she's a size 6-7 in girls. I think it will fit a 6-8 when I'm done. I have the midriff done now and will add the rest of the bottom part tonite, will be knee length when finished.

I'm getting so close to done ... only 3-4 more hours on the main part of it, then the edging - only I'm not sure what to do for the edging. Any suggestions?? Is a single crochet border probably my best bet? One side kinda folds down nicely, but the opposite side curls the opposite direction (up!), so I need to do something to fix that. Some kind of border seems the simplest option for that, lol. I've got a pic on my blog (crocheting cook, below) if you want to see what's done now.

Rebecca, maybe you could just get a skein of blue and use it as an accent row throughout? Maybe sc or sl rather then dc (if you do it in dc, I don't know what you were planning) just to make the colors pop? I don't know. You wouldn't need very much, but I think it would add a lot. I adore blues, though, lol.
I love those colors ... it looks like it would be a very comfy cozy combination! Very bright and warm.

I started my ripple ghan. I am using a pattern out of the "Blue Ribbon Afghans" book, the one from Idaho - zig zag ripple or something like that. Anyways, I'm making it for our bedroom, in the colors dk sage, lt sage, and white. The pattern is pretty nice, it takes a long time since is all sc, but it's not bad. My only problem is that it is too narrow across, it only came out to be 30" across :( I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how to make it wider after I'm finished. I could do vertical stripes on the sides in the same colors as the ghan. What do y'all think of that idea? I'm so bummed! I know I tend to crochet tightly but figured using a J hook would be a good size. I guess not. Any suggestions would be helpful!!! I'll post pics soon.

Well I finished the first mitten last night. Had to change some of the rounds, they increased too soon on the wrist and it didn't feel snug enough. I also ended up making it a little shorter than the pattern. I LOVE MY MITTEN!! Since when crocheting with the furry eyelash yarns 2/3 of the eyelash will end up on the side facing away from you, these ended up almost like fur-lined mitts!!! I've got to get more film this weekend so I can take pics. I'll start on the other mitten tonite!!
Okay here's the pic of the finished one, the other one will get done this week.

I finished my smaller "happy dog" size ripple blankie which will be either for Jersey, my friend's new doggy or a shelter pup. It might be too small for Jersey. I started yesterday morning and finished last night. It's all in double crochet which is so pleasant to work with. I did 4 rows of 2 different colors, both Red Heart SS - yellow and the other color is called "Polo". http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/julbea/ripple-blankie.jpg I'm really happy with the way it looks. I'm starting my second one now that I know I can do the ripple pattern; this one will be in sage green, gray, and a dusty rose which are some of the colors that compliment my living room. This one will be for Curly, my dog, so he'll maybe stop stealing my blanket? haha
Oh, and I used the easy ripple pattern (http://home.att.net/~susanBinKC/patterns.html?ripple.html) which was great to work with.

I did start another ripple lapghan though. This is for the February CAT at Crochet List (I posted about this in the "Crochet for Charity" forum). It's going to be a rainbow ripple ghan and I've already got up to yellow! So far it's beautiful!!!

Here's another ripple blanket I'm making,...it's almost finished now and is big enough to keep me warm while I'm working on it. This one will be my dog's very own ripple blankie. He doesn't seem to mind that I've put a rose color in it. I made it in RHSS in light sage, aran, a heather gray/green and the rose color which was something I was given for my wool "fix" at Xmas. I'm liking it,....and I must say I love working this ripple. I'm going to make one of those round ripples for a baby gift next up.

I'm halfway done with mine..It's a lapghan so it makes it easy. I am doing a rainbow like color scheme.
red, white, orange, white, yellow, white, green, white, blue, white, purple, white, blue, white, green, white, yellow, white, orange, white, red.
So far I'm up to the first blue. It has four rows of the color and two rows of white. Worked up very quickly too!!

I think I've gone ripple cuckoo maybe? I finished up two more round ripples this morning on a "deserved", well, needed vacation day just relaxing at home. Figured if I could wake up after sleeping in and have a 3 hour morning coffee I could do it in my favourite way....crocheting!!
The first one turned out like a happy watermelon blankie, and just makes me smile looking at it.

They are both for shelter animals and my snuggle blankie work. I've now made over 235 blankies for a couple of Winnipeg shelters. Here's the other one too:

Well - I'm kinda stretching the "ripple along" concept here, but this is all part of me figuring out how to make the round ripple NOT ruffle. I started one for my godson but I can't get it to lay flat to save my life, so I decided to play around and see if I could figure out what was going wrong. I still haven't quite figured it out, but I got a couple of kitty mats out of it. :rotfl
Here's Cinder's:

And Daisy's:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v34/faithpa76/Projects/DSC02996b.jpg
Pics of the kitties with their mats on my blog, lol. Don't want to overdo the pictures here. ;) I probably should have switched colors (it's kinda hard to tell they're ripples unless you look at the edges) but I think they look neat anyway. Cinder loves hers and Daisy - well, Daisy isn't sure yet.

They are pretty squishy - I used to strands of ww yarn and a P hook, so they should be pretty cushy!

February 23rd, 2005, 02:56 AM
Hi, I'm Gina and I want to join this Ripple Along too! (Can one join too many? ;) I've only joined the ones with projects I'm actually already working on.)
I have a problem though....I have ripple-itis! :( I discovered that I love making round ripples but I ran into a snag that I can't seem to fix. I've tried and tried. :bang I've been working on this since November 2004 and I'm getting anxious to finish it. I don't know how to get help on this one...I don't know anyone IRL who crochets that lives nearby. *sigh*
I'm making my ripple out Bernat's Cottontot. I found the pattern in a book I bought form Wal-Mart called New Crochet Basics. Here is a pic of my round ripple...
http://aftergodsownheart.com/crafts/crochet/blogimages/2005_02_22_ajasrippleinc.jpg
BTW....
Faith....thanks for the idea to make a small round ripple for my furbaby! I have a P hook and I'm sure I can spare some yarn from my stash to make a small mat. The ones you made do look nice and squishy and comfy too!

February 23rd, 2005, 09:49 PM
Rebecca...I lost a stich somewhere. Each time I go up the side of the "v" I'm supposed to have 20 sts but I have 19. :? So I frogged the whole round and checked the round below it. It has the right amount of sts so I re-did that next round that I had frogged and I was still coming up short sts. :th I was contemplating just adding an extra dc in to get my sts count back so I can go on to the next round. That is the only other thing I can think of to do. I'd like to get this blankie done before my son is too big for it!

I've been MIA because of a low back problem, so I've been getting LOTS stitched on my queen sized ripple. I now have 46" long and it is 62" wide. I am going to make it 88 inches long and then put about a 6-12 inche ruffle around the long sides and one short end. I will use it on my bed and I don't want the ruffle to be in our faces when we pull it up on top of the covers. Make sense?
Anywhooo....I'll get a pic and post as soon as I can get back on the puter. Not supposed to be here now, but couldn't stand it anymore! 4 days without put me into withdrawals!!:oops

Hope you're on the mend by now, NanC. I know how hard it can be to stay away from :computer
While I'm at it, I think I just might be ready to join in here. I'd started on a ripple ghan for my dbf over a month ago, but after frogging it twice, I was still not getting it right - but then again, that applied to everything I was trying to do for the last month. I think I may have finally broken whatever jinx that's been operating, so I'm ready to pull it out and give it another go, prodded along by his specifically requesting it now (it was going to be a surprise). I'll still be working on my other wips, but will be putting more time toward this project for sure now.
Here's a couple of shots of it where I left off, though this too will have to be frogged and redone. For over a month, it was like I totally forgot how to count, couldn't get anything straight! :bang

Thanks Faith! Staying true to my nickname, I spent hours playing around with various possible color combinations before finally settling on this one, trying to get it just right, you know? The only one that was a given was the ranch, I just adore that rich, coppery brown! I'm going to review the rows I did this weekend so I can see where I screwed it up, frog it back to that point (hoping I don't have to go all the way back to the foundation chain, that's a pain) and see how far I can go from there. Once I get it on track and rolling, progress should be good, I hope! :fc

I had been hoping to have my ripple ghan done this weekend so I could gift it today. Spoke with said giftee, Phil, who has been having a hard time the past couple of days, so it seemed like timing was gonna be perfect, except...
I had noted I was starting to run low on one of my colors, and so I decided to do only 10 color repeats instead of the 11 the pattern calls for since I just don't have the money right now to run out and buy one more skein for a few more rows of the project. It's strange, really - I have plenty of the other two left over, so this tells me that we don't always get a full "185 yards" in these homespun skeins.
It looked like I was gonna make it, until I got down to the last half of the last row... :eek:bang:yell:thair
All I needed was a few more yards! And now this project is gonna have to sit for a week until I get paid, just to buy a whole skein for "a few more yards". :angry
Well, if that's the case, I might as well put the 11th repeat in, since I will then have more than I need to complete it, next weekend. And I'd already hinted to him I was bringing him a surprise. <SIGH>

That's really sweet of you to even think of it Mitzi! I had a friend who was willing to call into my local store to put the charge on her credit card yesterday so I could get the yarn and complete the project - and she lives in Washington state! It's so nice to know there are such generous souls out there!
But, I remembered that I have a "reject" ball of homespun in one of the other colors that I had been planning on returning to the store. I'm taking it back today after work to exchange it for the color I need, so hopefully I will be able to get this project done in a few days after all. I figured since I'll now have enough yarn to complete the pattern as written, I might as well put the last nine rows on it too. So it just may end up working out for the best! It sure was disappointing yesterday, though.
I can hardly wait to post a pic of my completed ghan, it really turned out great! :hook

I'm gonna jump in and join this one. :) Mostly because I am already in the process of making a ripple afghan. Lol.
My SIL has been wanting this afghan that I made for my Mom a few years ago. She bought the yarn for the project and now my little hands have to get really busy.
I am making the Ripple Romance pattern like so many people here. This is going to be the fourth time that I have made the afghan. This version is all in one color using Homespun yarn and a size K hook.
The other times I made it I use a plain blue color (a brand of yarn they no longer make). The second time was one out of Homespun for my mother. The thrid time was using four different colors of regular Red Heart for my Grandfather. I need to see if I can get pictures of the last two afghans as I forgot to take pictures of them before. Naughty me!

Thanks - now I'm the one playing catchup, lol! As it turned out, I hadn't bought the other skein from Michaels. It's all long and involved as to why I couldn't make the switch like I'd wanted to, and I just plain had no money to buy anything all last week so I just set it aside and worked on other things. It was just as well.
I'm happy to report, though, that I finally did manage to pick up that needed yarn last night and finished the ghan today - it took all of one minute to fill in the last few stitches, lol! I took some pics of it Thursday and posted them to my blog this morning. You can see how close I was to the end here (http://goldilocksofyarn.blogspot.com/2005/04/limbo.html).
And you can see my silly giftee enjoying his new afghan here (http://goldilocksofyarn.blogspot.com/2005/04/i-think-he-likes-it.html). What a nut he is! I love seeing the finished ones! I am hoping to get back to mine (it's over half done) by next week. I did get the rest of the yarn, so I'm ready to roll!!!

I'm joining! I'm new here, but I've been working on a ripple lapghan for awhile. I'll post pictures once I find my USB cord....
Anyway, my ripple is being made with LB Wool-ease in Fisherman, Camel, Chocolate, and Peacock, and the pattern is my own.
Thanks for all of the inspiration; it was lurking here and reading about this CAL that made me want to try my hand at a ripple in the first place, and they're really fun to do! Beautiful work, everyone!

Finished my ripple! Had an adventure in forgetting a ball of necessary yarn on vacation, so I had to start a new one with Caron Simply Soft Brites. More on my blog: Kate's Ripple (http://mcrochets.blogspot.com/2005/05/kates-ripple.html).

Can I join?? I'm working on my first ripple afghan and its also my first afghan. I'm using Red Heart Super Saver Navy, Soft White, and the Navy Verigated (not sure what its called). The pattern I'm using is from a book I picked up for a dollar called "First Choice Ripple Afghans." I will take a WIP pic in the morning and post it :)

Gavinsmom- Wow, your first afghan! :yay Best of luck. I've only made a couple of ripples, but they're a lot of fun!
Catherine- I really like the colors you chose. Good luck with your ripple!
