Hi all!

I just wanted to let you know about something that Kimberly (Woven n Spun) and I are starting up, so that you have the opportunity to get involved if you'd like to.

Wheels are being put in motion to start the Blankey Brigade. As such, we're going to begin making baby blankets for newborns whose fathers are deployed. Plans are for the blankets to be red, white and blue.

It's going to be slow going for a while, I assume, while everything gets started up, but the idea has been given a big thumbs up, so I wanted to let y'all know about it.

If you have any questions, you can email me or send me a Private Message, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks!

Update: A size for the blankeys has been agreed on. :yay The target size is roughly 28x28 or 30x30. It doesn't have to be exact, just something close to that. They can be any pattern, so you can do whatever you want as far as that goes. We also have a button now that Kimberly created! Anyone who's interested in joining up is more than welcome to save it and put it up on their blog or website.

I am really excited about this project and can't wait to get started. Like I needed an excuse to go buy more yarn....but this is a really GREAT excuse. :)

My Chaplain here was also excited about this project when I discussed it with him. He can't wait to see what us "creative folk" come up with.

I ready! I'll start on one today! Hmmm.... what pattern to use. Anybody have any thoughts?...The 12 point star maybe? or maybe a ripple like the "colorful" one I posted about in the show and tell thread?

Awesome!

I'm in a sling for a week, so dealing with worker's comp and all that fun stuff, so no crocheting for me. I'm so glad to see y'all getting involved though!

Hopefully I'll be able to do more next week, for now it's mostly one handed typing and dealing with the nitty gritty - on a vicodin 'high'. Oh well.

Welcome to the Blankey Brigade!

That sounds great. Another charity excuse to crochet. That makes it a valid reason right :lol :lol . Suggestion for a pattern would be the star afghan that was made as a snuggle. I can't remember who listed it, but it was just listed today on show & tell, I think. Should make it easier to find. I have already started on a snuggle in that pattern & it works up really fast. Just add more rows to it for the size you need.

Count me in:yay This sounds like a great project for the Hermitage Hobby Lobby group. I know "Nashville Crocheter" has already posted. Unlike "Nashville Crocheter" I'm not going to use the 12 point baby blanket. I just finished one and it took me too long. Wish this had started before all the Ft. Campbell babies were born.

Well, I found the star pattern I was talking about. Just left a pic of one I made as a snuggle. I think you will like this pattern. I can think of about a dz. color combos just using red, white & blue. I used a J hook & I figured all 15 rows would make it approx. 26" Just add a row or 2.

I got started on my Blankie today. I decided to do a ripple with red, white and blue stripes. I may edge it with a varagated red, white and blue yarn Will have to wait and see how I feel about that when I get it finished.

Check out the star pattern they are talking about. It only has 5 points instead of 12 like we were doing. So it may not take as long to make as your beautiful one did :)

I may do that one next but for now I'm working on a rectangle ripple.

As soon as I am allowed to crochet again I am going to get some yarn and try a ripple and then a star. Y'all are full of great ideas! Has anyone tried doing the star in baby clouds before?? I love that stuff...

Oh, and is there a pic of the 12 point one somewhere that I can see?

What's baby clouds? Gotta look into that I guess. I started the star pattern with just some plain old red heart I had in my stash. It works up really fast.

I just posted on your blog. I would love to get in on this. But right, we are in the process of PCSing in August. We have a house we need to get ready to sell. I love making baby blankets. If I get a chance, I will get something started. But when we get there, I will get in contact with ya!

No Problem Leah.

I totally understand the PCS'ing thing. We too are looking at a move in August. We haven't received our orders yet and that's causing me a little stress, but that's normal for us ggg.

PM if you get a chance with your regular email addy.

I have talked to my step mom in Connecticut, and she knits. I was telling her all about this and is wondering if something in red/white/blue strikes her would you take it as well? I told her I am almost 100% sure you would, althought it is knitting.

Will that be okay? She has some yarn in her stash and told me to expect her first blankey in the mail to me next week! YAY!

Heather, I personally don't see where it would make a difference whether if was knitted or crocheted. I knit too and if the mood strikes to pick up the needles, I would do so.

You're welcome for the pattern. Since the site is still new and with school still in session in our house (only a month or so more to go...wooo hooo) I am a little slow working on things. But I do hope to have more added as I go along.

As for the adoption celebrations, yup, we celebrate them all. (all five of my children are adopted). They (the kids) were older when they were adopted, the youngest being 5 when everything was finalized so we have a birthday each year and a re-birthday which is the adoption date. They know that's the day they become "our" kids. So, we will do this again 15-June for my other 4 children (which are all a sibling group). :D

Seems the 3 rd is where I go wrong, it just does not make sense to me, (us)

sem464
April 14th, 2005, 03:52 PM
Ok, I found once you get past the first 2 rows it is a breeze. Here is what I changed:
1) the starting row-when you chain, made no sense to me. I chained 4, joined to form a loop (or you can do the miracle circle they talk about in "Crochetme"). Then I ch 5 (acts as first dc & first ch 2 sp), *1 dc, ch2. Repeat from * 3 more times. (should have 5 sp). sl st into 3rd ch of beginning ch to join, ch 3, turn.

If you will follow the directions, starting @ row 2 you should be fine.

Now, in row 3, it tells you to do the shell, then it tells you how to do the shell, and then it is telling you that you just made a shell. Makes it sound like there are 3 shells together, not so.

As confusing as this sounds I think you will probably get it, with yarn & hook in hand.

We would be glad to have you. At this time, there is no specified cut off date. The way I look at it, as long as we have deployed soldiers, we have a need. I don't think we ever specified that the blankets had to be red, white, AND blue although the patriotic look is sort of what we are going for, but as long as it's that type of genre that would go along with our theme. did that just make sense? (we are still trying to get our studies done today and aren't having our best day. :eek

I agree with Kimberly, as long as we have deployed soldiers there will be a need for blankets. And as far as colors go, you can make one that's all blue, or white and red, or any other combination you'd like.

Any sent to me will be at Fort Knox for now. We currently do not a lot of deployed soldiers, but we do have a few with babies on the way. I have been told our new upcoming duty station will have quite a few deployed soldiers as it is a major artillery post, so I am sure there will be a need there as well.

This is the blanket that Michelle made.

My dad is just flabbergasted by the whole thing. He's commented about how amazing it all is at least 3 times, and normally the only thing that gets mentioned that much is math, and even then not often! I'm wondering how many are WIPs? Just to blow his mind even more... :lol

I have to agree with him though, all the support we've been getting has been amazing. I know I've said it before, but THANK YOU! :yay

I loved this project! It was a lot of fun to make the stars. You-all were right. 23 rows. :D

I also thought that when you get to about the sixth row; that that would make a really neat looking dish towel. ( Using cotton yarn.) And it goes so fast you could whip out a lot of dish towels in one sitting! LOL!!!! :lol

Hi all.

Wanted to let you know that I gave Capt Hurley 7 blankets from the Blankey Brigade. She let me know later in the day that they were able to already give a newborn a blankey from us. Mom went into premature labor and baby was in ICU with a collapsed lung with minimal stimulation. Mom cried and held the blankey and cried. She sent her thanks to her unseen angel.

The family will take baby and mom back to FL with them so they can take care of mom and the baby while dad is away. my contact feels that wouldn't be enough time to get something made, mailed, and delivered, but was going to pass along the thoughts of wanting to do something.

Thanks again to all who have made this possible. We will continue to have soldiers deployed for awhile and will continue to have babies born while daddy is away, so we need to keep the blankey's coming. :cheer
