View Full Version : Poncho Crochetalong

Thanks to 2junebugs4me, I have become inspired to attempt a poncho like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2899740088&category=63866#ebayphotohosting) or this one (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3007&item=3471887893). So, my question is:
Does anybody want to do a Poncho Crochetalong?
Since there is no specific pattern and we'll be learning as we go, to tie them all together, there should be a theme of some sort--base the pattern on a particular stitch, specific yarn type, or an idea like Spring or puppies.
If there is any question about the basic construction of the poncho, read this first (http://www.livejournal.com/community/crochet/733861.html?thread=5441701#t5441701). We can iron out the details, as a group, after we get started.
I think this will be a fun experience and maybe we can even submit some of our creations to crochetme (http://www.crochetme.kwerky.com). I just hope somebody will want to join me.

I love those. I'll be joining, though I think I might be doing a shawl first, then a poncho. Will you accept my shawl? Pllllleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase? :'(

Oh, boy. Those are gorgeous. I enacted a yarn-buying-freeze yesterday, but I may just have to break it already... Ack. Hmm. I'll see how quickly you get started, and then I'll let you know if I can really commit...
But this is a great idea!

jennmwalsh, as long as you fall under the theme, I may be able to make an exception. Since I don't have a blog, and you are already bucking the system ;) , you can see about creating a button for the Crochetalong.
Maybe I'll post the whole Crochetalong in my LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/pfirsch). How strange would it be to start this and not have anywhere to post the list of members? I don't use my LJ very much; now, I'll have an excuse to post things more often.
crochetme, I'm not sure how big your stash is; so, you may have to break the fast, but I was thinking you could just use up yarn that you already have. This is all about being creative and experimentation. I sincerely hope some of us can submit patterns to crochetme (http://crochetme.kwerky.com) when we're done.
I still have to work out some details before we can "officially" start. I have an idea already for a theme. It's nothing too difficult in order to accommodate the various skill levels and to give each person a chance to experiment with designing. The possibilities are endless.
Does anybody have a good idea for a name? Poncho Crochetalong just doesn't do it for me. We need a better name since this poncho has that something extra special about it, or I like to pretend it does.
Thanks for the interest, ladies. I'll be back later on today.

Can I join in even though my poncho is half way done?
I've been making it for about 3 weeks, and I'm hoping to have it finished in the next week or two. I need it for my next camping trip the weekend after next so it has to be done. But as it gets bigger each round gets bigger, so it's taking me about 20 minutes per round now.

I'd love to join in! And I'd be MORE than willing to use some of my webspace for the crochet a long, I have so much space that I hardly use any of it. I just don't have time for coding anymore, so the site sits, mostly untouched & unupdated :( . I have some poncho (vintage) patterns on my site, if anyone is interested!! www.adultramblings.therapids.net. (http://www.adultramblings.therapids.net.)
Anyways I want to join in! Please share details! adultramblings AT therapids DOT net.

Hehe, this is fun. I tried to do something button like. It's bigger, I know, but I have NO experiance. I called it "Poncho-rama" and that can be changed, but I thought it sounded kind of cute :lol
So, here's what I did:

Ok, I really like these types of ponchos!! I want to join the poncho-along, but wont be able to start until after the weekend. The yarn looks very thin, what type of yarn do you think it is? I get the whole crochet a long scarf type thing and then sew the side together. This would be perfect for the spring/summer months to wear over a light shirt.

April 5, 2004, 09:11 PM
Okay, I will need everybody who wants to join to pfirsch AT gmx DOT net so that I can get a complete list of all the names. Please make the subject: Poncho-rama (this will just make it easier for me to sort through my mail)
Theme: The poncho must be a variation of double crochet (aka British/Australian treble crochet). All the stitches don't have to be dc (tr), but the majority should be. Be creative. If all you can manage is to do the whole thing in dc (tr), then so be it--just fancy it up around the edges or something.
Size: The original idea was to make a poncho that looked like
<img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v163/pfirsch/asymmetrical.jpg" />
Here you will find suggestions (http://www.livejournal.com/community/crochet/733861.html?thread=5441701#t5441701) on how to make this particular poncho.
However, if you already have a pattern already in mind, then go ahead and use that one; at the very least, please remain within the theme.
Yarn & Color: Once again, be creative. Use what you have, buy new yarn, unravel a sweater you bought at the Salvation Army and use that. There are no limits. Since it's heading towards spring, I would suggest something lightweight.
We will officially begin tomorrow. Why? Because I'm the boss, that's why.;) Plus, it's after midnight here and I don't feel like starting a project tonight.
I will paste this on my Live Journal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/pfirsch) for reference.
If anybody has suggestions, ideas, buttons, comments, post them here.
Glad y'all could join me!
Pfirsch
P.S. jennmwalsh, the button is cool, but indeed a bit on the large side. I have no idea about buttons, but I know somebody here can help you out. Thanks for having it so quickly!

Ooh, I'm looking forward to this. I just bought yarn from Herrschnerr's, some white Patons Katrina. I'm going to try the top photo, and use my Harmony Guide to try to figure out a pattern.
I think maybe I can shrink the picture I did above. I'm going to try at least!

I bought my yarn today, walmart doesnt have a good variety :P so I just bought red heart white with some eyelash yarn to add zip to it :D I cant start on it though until I have finished my niece's poncho for this weekend.
MommaChelle
April 6, 2004, 02:16 AM
Question? I am working on my niece's poncho in this scarf like pattern, can I use this as my crochet along? I dont know when I will get to work on my own poncho since I will still have my mom's afghan to finish before Mother's Day next month (only have 4 of the 30 squares complete), and I will want to work on that so I can be done and set it aside, with a big sigh of relief ;)
So, can I, can I? huh huh? :lol I have done 7 rows so far, but it will work up quicker since it's considerably smaller than an adult poncho!
**Ha! Nevermind, I will be done with this poncho in a couple of days lol, it's really going that quickly! This is like my practice piece before I work on my poncho. So this wont be part of the crochetalong :pig **

and me, pfirsch--Brown Sugar, LTD (http://www.livejournal.com/users/pfirsch)
Who else? I'll keep the list up on my LiveJournal. Y'all can also add the list to your respective blogs. I have no idea how long this will last; so, we'll just keep it going until everybody has a finished product or until nobody wants to play anymore, whichever comes first. Since I'm making this up as I go along, please feel free to correct me or put in your two cents.
jennmwalsh, how can we make the writing on the button readable next to the yellow? Different color? Different font? Now that I'm seeing the button from a different monitor, it doesn't look so huge anymore. Maybe we can keep it the same size and just work on the font. I'll E-mail you with some ideas.
Ok. So, Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I will buy yarn between now and tomorrow. I've already chosen a stitch and can't wait to get started!

yarntomato, I like the button, too. Now, I just need to put it up on Live Journal. So, I need to know:
What is the HTML code for hyperlinking buttons?
Pfirsch
Donna
April 7, 2004, 10:50 AM
Thank you! :)
How to display and link the button:
<a href="http://pub119.ezboard.com/fcrochetvillefrm32.showMessage?topicID=6.topic"><img src="http://img45.photobucket.com/albums/v138/dbelle/crochet/ponchorama2.jpg" width="88" height="31" border="0" vspace="3" alt="Poncho-rama"></a>
Anyone can paste the code above in her blog or web site exactly as it is, with no changes, and the button will appear and it will be linked to the Poncho Crochetalong topic here at Crochetville. It grabs the image from my photobucket account. If you want to save the image on your own server/web space, just change this part: http://img45.photobucket.com/albums/v138/dbelle/crochet/ponchorama2.jpg
The border="0" stops there from being an extra border around the image because it is linked. Without border="0", there would be a border around it the same color as the rest of the links on your page.
The vspace="3" (meaning 3 pixels of vertical space) keeps the button from being jammed right up against other buttons or text that are above or below the button.
The alt="Poncho-rama" is the text that displays when someone puts their mouse on the button.
pfirsch
April 7, 2004, 12:58 PM
My boy did it for me, but thanks for the explanation. I will be able to do it without him next time :b I put the button up on LJ already. I linked it to Crochetalongs instead of straight to Crochetville.
Will you be joining us?
I'm off to buy yarn in a few minutes. I just hope I will be able to decide which to get before they close.

The poncho pictures came from e-bay. Somebody from another board and someone here were talking about them. That's where the idea to start this whole thing came from.
As for my poncho, I'm using Vienna (100% Baumwolle mercerisiert, gasiert), a mercerized cotton that I got at Wolle Rödel, a local yarn store, for 1,45 € per ball. The yarn is really nice, but much thinner than I'm used to using which lead to me pulling it out three times already. I think I've finally found a stitch that's a keeper, but I'm only on the second row. Hopefully, I haven't spoken too soon.;)

I'm not a big fan of dc.
Sorry that the stitch doesn't appeal to you. I just picked dc because I thought there would be more improvisational possibilities. Since I forgot my copy of the Harmony Guide back in NC, I realize now that there aren't that many dc variations online. It's all a learning experience, right? Like realizing yesterday that I won't have near enough yarn to finish my project.:\
I'll still be cheering you guys on, though.

Sorry that the stitch doesn't appeal to you. Although not my favorite, dc is a useful stitch, and I'd bet it's probably one of the most widely used stitches overall. I know you gals will come up with some fab ways to incorporate it. :D I guess I'm just not feeling overly creative in the area of ponchos right now. :b
I won't have near enough yarn to finish my project. pfirsch, what about buying a batch of complimentary yarn, and crocheting your poncho holding one strand of each together? You can make a little bit of yarn go a lot further that way. Since I've been buying thrift store sweaters and unravelling them, I've found that many of the prettiest sweaters are made of two or three strands held together. One I pulled apart had a strand of multicolored thick and thin yarn and a strand of glittery yarn. Another had a strand of soft, fluffy gray, a strand of plain, string-like white, and a strand of nubby white.

How do you get the quotes? Hi, Amber! First highlight and right click to copy the stuff you want to quote. Click reply. Right above where you make a reply, there's a line that says Formatting--you can choose Plain Text, ezCodes or HTML. Choose ezCodes. Some buttons will appear to the left of the reply box--image, link, email, quote, etc. Click the quote button, right click and paste the stuff you copied into the little box that comes up. Continue typing the rest of your reply.

My poncho is going well (although I did have a weeks head start.)
My problem is that I've run out of wool. It was some end of stock wool that I got cheaply off the market, I've been back to the stall and the man can't get anymore.
It quite long, but just not long enough to totally cover me on my camping weekends, so the red border will have to be longer. I've still got to do the neck and hood, so it won't be ready for this weekends expedition, but I'll take it with me and crochet on the beach.

Once you figure out how to get buttons on your site to show up;) , you can put up the button for Poncho-rama and go to town. The poncho needs to be a variation of dc, but you can make up a pattern of your own, if you want.

I'm pretty happy...I only have one more ufo to finish before I can start my poncho...FINALLY. I finished my boyfriend's mother's Mother's Day gift, and a shalw for me for my boyfriend's upcoming graduation. My stupid camera broke, so I have to wait until it comes back from being repaired to take pictures...hopefully at least before Mother's Day!

Thought I'd post on my "progress" with the Poncho-rama --- sending the 1/2 finished "poncho" to the FROG POND!!!!! GRRRRRR!!! (as I said before) I'm posting my frustrations here because my husband has no sympathy for the frogging of a project.. except that he can't understand why I would do it!
I finished one of the same pattern about 2 weeks ago and started on another one in black for the ponchorama and when I went to try it on again.. I hated it. So I'm going to be frogging them both in hopes that I can make ONE that actually looks how I want it to. What I did (and I'm so embarrassed to say that I thought this would work) was made a triangle shell stitch shawl and "laced it " up the front into a poncho.. I thought it would be cute.. I changed my mind. Now I've decided that I am going to try to make this particular stitch into 2 rectangular pieces and sew into a poncho. I have no idea how to translate this stitch into a rectangle... LOL this should be fun!!!!

Sorry you had to frog your poncho.:(
What is the stitch you're using for the poncho? I think that I may be able to help you form it into a rectangle. Once you know the repeat in the pattern, it's really not too bad to figure out.
There's a diagram at the bottom of the page for a Striped Poncho (http://www.adultramblings.therapids.net/stripedponcho.html) on adultramblings's vintage pattern site that shows how to sew the two rectangles together. I'm not sure if that's the shape you want, but it is an option.
I will try to work on my poncho today. The sun is out; so, maybe I can get my hands warm enough to crochet for a while.
Keep your head up, Mouse. We're crocheting along with you.:hugs

The pattern that I was using <a href="http://web.************/web/20010802222825/www.cei.net/~vchisam/groovy/7706.html" target="_new">Groovy Shawl pattern</a>. I would like to make the pieces about 15 inches wide or so (little bigger is fine.. just not smaller)

Well, Mouse, I don't have to actually do anything! There are two great links that will explain making those rectangles much better than I could:
Crochet World (http://crochetwiz.4t.com/main.htm) has a pattern for a Granny Rectangle (link is on the right)
There's a pattern for a Rectangle Granny Square Afghan (http://www.angelcrafts.net/recgrannyafghan.html), at Angel Crafts (but if it's a rectangle, it's not a square, is it? :rolleyes )
Or you can do dc in Groups of Three (http://www.shopsparkles.com/Crochet/thrdbls.html#Double%20in%20Groups%20of%20Three) I think this will give you much more freedom to make the rectangles exactly the size that you want.
To have the poncho not stretch so much from it's own weight, adding a border to both rectangles before you stitch them together would be a good idea. Even if you still want to tie them up, I think it will hold up better with a border.
Sorry to go on and on.

First of all..I do want to make a poncho and am learning a lot by 'watching' you all BUT I do intend to make one and I thought a black one would be cool.:Y Right now I am struggling with a pink tank top design that I found in a magazine. :D After a very bad experience with a shawl in eyelash yarn, I have been reluctant to try a poncho(such a big project)!:blush
I was walking through department store at the mall this week and saw ponchos in the trendy teen department. One was long and scarf like very similar to the beginning poncho pics here. The other was white and short almost like a little cape or cape-let done in lacy white open work stitches. :clap I thought it was a great idea for a poncho like wrap for summer without being as big as a poncho. BUT would it count for a poncho here?

Why not? There are no rules about length. Mine should fall just to my waist when it's done.

Ok:Y I'm on for doing that as soon as my tank top is done.

This is so great! Just the other day I decided to make myself a poncho (very basic giant granny-square with an opening up top for my head). So I was looking for some pictures of actual ponchos for inspiration when I stumbled on this ez-board. I think it's fabulous that all of you are making them too (the pictures are great). If I can figure out how, I'll try to post a picture of mine when I"m done.

Was REALLY hoping to finish my poncho this weekend. I actually thought I had it finished yesterday, but wasn't happy with it so had to rip back. I had crocheted a long strip, inspired by one constructed that way in the Weekend Knitting book. Didn't like it as there was a point in the front, but not in the back. A further look at the book showed that was quite evident, but somehow I missed it. So I frogged back, and will construct it like the one someone posted from this (http://www.adultramblings.therapids.net/stripedponcho.html) pattern. I probably only have 3 or 4 hours max of crocheting to do on this, but today my hands hurt (overdid crocheting and knitting yesterday I guess), so will need to lay off crocheting for a few days (which seems to hurt more than knitting). So close yet so far!

Hi kids.
I'm going to have to pull out of the CAL for now, as I'm not sure how long it will be before my wrist will be comfortable crocheting again. I seem to be doing alright with knitting, but this whole healing thing may take far longer than I'd expected. I'm keeping the poncho on my WIP list, though, as I'm determined to finish it when I'm able. I'll stay in touch with the thread; I can't wait to see you all with your fab ponchos!

pfirsch...I sent you the email, did you receive it? Just checking!
The yarn was Caron Ultra Soft. It felt really good to work with, and I think Caron just became one of my favorite yarns. It was really a good choice, color wise, and feel wise.

jennmwalsh, I just put it in the gallery. I couldn't figure out how to put the link to the pattern in the description, but for anyone who is curious, her poncho was made using

Hi,
I just finished a pink poncho for my son's girlfriend, and am working on another one for ME! from a big cone of burgundy-ish chenille I had in my stash..can I join? Will send pics as soon as I can...Not happy at all with the neckline on the pink one..so will adjust it a lot next time. Have yarn ordered for 2 more ponchos to make next week, I ordered a pattern from the UK..and the whole poncho is crocheted from eyelash yarn. I can't wait to get started on one! I think? :fc

Well I never officially joined this CAL but I thought I would show you what I came up with anyway! I'm kinda frustrated cause after I made it, I realized I used the wrong hook and it's too small for me, I wear a L-XL and this fits a S-M thru the shoulders just fine. Oh well, I'm gonna have my mom wear it and see if I can get some orders that way. I used the capelet pattern from the coatsandclark site. It works up really fast and is super easy to do.

Here is a close-up of the stitch pattern, it's kinda hard to see in this yarn but I'm pretty sure it's the Aligned Shells stitch (square #25) in the 63 square afghan pattern.

I finally finished my poncho! Of course I don't remember where I got the pattern now, either, but I'll find it. It was one of those freebie tear off sheets. It was made with two strands of yarn, one forest green, and one strand of white. I think it came out gorgeous if I do say so myself! I must take pictures now!!

Is the poncho crochet along still going on? If it is I would love to join. I have wanted to make one for quite some time.

It is still going on, but I am wondering if anyone would like to take over the reigns.
Anybody? Please?
mimikj, the rules for the crochet along are on the very first page of the thread.
