I'm not sure if this is the right spot I didn't know where else to put it.I am going to post a pattern on C'ville and I was wondering if there a way to sort of protect it from other people selling it before I do if I do decide to do so,Ihaven't any idea as to how to do that as yet, thanks for any input at all

Are you going to post a pattern for free on Crochetville, and then try to sell it later? :think If you want to protect your pattern (the actual text, diagrams and photos) you will want to copyright your work with the U.S. Copyright Office. It's not hard to do and they have a lot of helpful information on their website for first-time copywritters :D http://www.copyright.gov/

There was another thread that went into detail about US copyright law (no idea about Canada).

Interesting, apparently you can protect from others selling your PATTERN but can't stop anyone from selling the objects they make from it.

I have seen some people write their name or web site across the picture of the finished piece in an effort to keep others from claiming it as their own.....but what would prevent them from simply making the item and taking a new picture of it?:think You can PM our very own Jimbo here at Crochetville, he was a Patent Agent before he retired.

Patents and copyrights are two very different things. It would be very, very difficult to obtain a patent on a crochet pattern. But you can easily copyright your written pattern. If you live in Canada, you would need to research Canadian copyrights - but your Canadian copyright would be respected here in the U.S.
