Hello all,
I was recently given 5 skeins of Mongolian Cashmere -Silk Wool 2ply:

http://www.jadesapphire.com/

Each skein is 55 grams and says approx 400yd.

I'm fairly new to crochet so I've never worked with wool this fine before, so I'm looking for some patterns that would be suitable. But nothing too advanced!

Also, this might be a dumb question, but what does the 400yd mean? Each skein is a different colour, so I don't know how far the wool will go when crocheted up. Will one skein be enough for a scarf or a throw rug or neither? 400yd seems a lot compared to the weight of 55g, but maybe it goes a really long way??

Anyway, I'm a bit lost with this wool but it's very beautiful and because it was a gift, I do want to use it so I can show the person who gave it to me what I've done with it.

I'd really love your feedback.
Thanks so much! :)

:cheer I see you are new and from Australia so welcome from a Kiwi.:cheer

:hook The 400yds means it is 400 yards long which is a bit less than 400 metres. 39 1/2 inches to a metre.
It must be very fine yarn because I have 8ply (DK) yarn here which is 100 grams and it only has 310 metres.

If you wanted, you could double it up to make a thicker yarn but it really depends on what you want to make with it.

I sometimes find that I keep a yarn for a while and eventually, I decide what I want to make with it.

Sleep on it for a while.

Have fun.

PS, I had a look at the link and I see that they have knitting patterns which take 1 ball for a scarf or a small shawl. Crochet will take a wee bit more but I would work with a larger hook to create a nice open fabric.

Thanks Colleen.

It was such a beautiful gift to receive, but with 5 mostly non coordinating colours, I'm not sure what I can make!! And I've only worked with 8ply & 12ply before, so it's going to be very different for me.

I'm looking for some patterns that aren't too difficult and not too prissy - as in, I need something that's a little forgiving to someone who isn't yet the neatest of crocheters! :blush

I'm looking forward to using it though. Crocheting is surprisingly addictive! :)

Hmm, how about double up the yarns, particularly to "mismatch" what you pair up, so it will hide a bit how the dyelots don't match... get a biggish hook, maybe and I or a K for a lacier effect and chain till you have long enough for a scarf and crochet up (with the same hook) sc up the chain in enough rows till you have the width you want. If you have yarn left over when you are done, put fringe or tassles at the ends.

not really a "pattern"...more like "really rough guideline" .
