Okay, this is driving me crazy. I swear someone posted a link to where this pattern could be found just a few weeks ago, and now I can't find it. I tried a forum search and nothing came up. Perhaps I've finally lost it? :confused
Anyway, there's been a discussion in one of my Flickr groups about how this (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=696770955&size=l) afghan was made. Ring a bell for anyone? Thanks!

it's pretty! i like the motifs. reminds me of daisy wheel flowers (or cathrine wheel). no idea how they did it unless they refer to joining each motif as you make it, kind of like when you make a motif doily. you work each motif separately but you join them as you go in certain places to get the shape you're after

No idea either. Looks like the wheel/disk thing to me, too.

The woman that took the photo said she saw it in a NYC boutique and was wondering if anyone knew how it was made.
It might not be a join-as-you-go pattern, I just could have sworn that someone here a few weeks ago was looking for a join-as-you-go pattern and someone else posted a link to something that looked similar to the photo. Like I said, I think I've finally lost it. Or perhaps the making was just destined to be a mystery...:2spin

That looks very similar to a pattern I've been planning to make in the Join As you Go Afghans book.

looks relatively simple...maybe make a ring, 8 sc around, ch 11 (or so) loop, sc back to the ring, another ch 11 loop, sc back to the ring...repeat around...next motif start the same but on first chain loop either do half the chain and sc to the first motif and finish the loop or do the whole chain, remove hook and loop thru a corresponding chain on first motif, sc back to the ring, repeat once, finish motif as first. Row 2, continue as second motif but join two sets of chains, one on bottom, one on side. this is type of thing I have done on doily motifs like renegade said.

That's the clue I was looking for! It's the 9th picture down on this (http://cgi.ebay.com/JOIN-AS-YOU-GO-AFGHANS-Crochet-Patterns-Book-NEW_W0QQitemZ150138439271QQihZ005QQcategoryZ11797Q QcmdZViewItem) page--is that the afghan you were planning to make from the book? Okay, so it's not the same one as in the picture, but it's the one I saw last week that I was thinking of. Thanks so much--now I won't have that running around my brain.
Harmonise, thanks for the pattern suggestion. I'll pass it on to the woman who was looking to make the afghan.

I think the post you were talking about from a couple weeks back was a pattern from someone who is making the afghans for a charity. If you emailed her she would send you the pattern and just asked that you use it for charity. I could be wrong but maybe this will help locate the original post?
