I actually used 4 different colors of embroidery thread :yes and at first only changed one of the colors out every 3rd row. I soon saw that the dress would be too long if I kept it up at that speed :idea so I had to change it out at every row and it became too drastic. :eek

The bloomers are solid white and the booties :socks are going to be white with the same trim as the sleeves. The bonnet however is still in the making... I haven't decided what to do with it yet. Karen :princess aka Krakovianka, gave me the idea :hug with her painted doily that she did and I wanted to do something small to start with. Karen, (Krakovianka) did tell me that it is hard to rip out your stitches and she was totally right :thair so that kept me from redoing the top of the dress. Once this doll dress is done, I am thinking of doing another painted item. :artist I just haven't thought of what yet... I just know it will be planned better! :compute

It looks good from here... do you have a larger picture by any chance? These old eyes are not great with itty bitty pics :sigh

looks great but even being young that thumbnail is a bit hard to really appreciate your work. sounds like a lot of trial and error :)

Sue,

I think it looks great. The colors complement each other so well that even the less gradual color change looks good--just not what you imagined, I know. I have considered almost all the thread projects I have done so far "experimental," and part of a learning process, so what I hope to eventually be able to do is plan out the colored thread pattern with confidence that I will get what I want.

And as far as ripping it out...forget it! I would highly discourage anyone from trying this technique with a complicated pattern. Better for something easy, so you are less likely to make mistakes!

But I still think the doll dress is cute, and very unusual.

Sorry the picture was sooooooo small. I have moved the picture to a blog I started so I now have a place for my pictures online. I hope that helps to make it bigger for you. When I opened it in the new place, it let me use one of my programs and that way I was able to resize it! It was originally a downsized version for the thread but I couldn't figure out how to put it in here so I put a link.

Thank you Karen! I thought using 4 threads would be hard but it isn't too bad. They stay tangle free with the setup I told you about and actually wind themselves around each other. The color change from the 1st 3 rows to the 2nd 3 rows is very gradual, which is what I wanted but I just didn't have the space in the size of the dress to do it in. I wasn't planning this out.

Can't wait to start the next one even though I don't know what it will be! I might just try my 1st doily... We aught to do a painted doily CAL Karen! What do you think?

I think it would be great to do this as a CAL, because there is so much you can learn from others. Anyone else game to try a "painted" doily? You could even try a small pattern, maybe 12 or so rounds, to get used to working with thread. You'd still end up with something entirely unique and original!

Why don't we go post it in the CAL section Karen? You have so many doily patterns, why don't you choose one and post it for us to use? Would that be good for you?

The dress is very nice. I only used two colors for a doily before. I used whie thread & green & yellow embroidery thread, #40. I had no trouble ripping out mistakes, embroidery thread either machine or hand is thicker than sewing thread. It looks cute on your doll model!
A CAL for something painted sounds like fun!

I too would be interested in doing a painted crochet-along! If you start one, I will definately join up!
