Yep!! Learn how to make an even chain BEFORE going too much further!!! They need to establish a rhythm with their crochet, and the rest will come naturally! And don't hold the yarn too tight - it should FLOW~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!

Well, I have to disagree with teaching the chain first, though it is usually taught that way. I have taught hundreds of people in person, and have learned that working into the chain is the hardest thing for them to learn.
So what I do is, for each student, I make up a small piece worked in sc --
maybe about 15 sts wide, and 3 rows high. Then I have them work in sc
for a few rows first. This gives them something to hold on to. Then they learn to chain to turn, do hdc, then dc, then tr. By then they have learned about chains. By now they can begin with a foundation chain and have
little trouble working the stitches they know into it.
A lot of professional teachers use this method. It is a little bit of work for you to make up the swatches, but it's usually worth it.
