View Full Version : Update for Jordan

an 8 yr old girl (dtr of a guy my DH works with-who we do not know) has relapsed into leukemia. i would like to make her a hat of some kind but am unsure of what would be appropriate. considering i do not know her or her parents or her style or anything....
should i even do anything? would a blanket be good for the hospital?? or is she too old? she'll be in the hospital for 3 months in dallas.
ideas?? i really need help here.
oh, and if anyone feels led to do anything for her, i'd be glad to get you more details (via email)
thanks, ladies :grouphug
our young Jordan that we have all grown to love and care for so much has passed away.
thank you all so much for the blankies and stuffed lovies that were made for her. they truly did brighten her days at the hospital and warmed the hearts of her mom and dad.

Rebecca,
<a href="http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/cancercaps.html" target="_new">Bev's Country Cottage</a> has several good hat patterns. You can also do a search for "chemo caps" for other sites out there. I think a hat would be a nice gesture if she is going to be going through chemo. I have a friend in chemo right now and she was surprised how cold her head gets even though the weather is warm.
Use very soft yarn, cotton & cotton blends are nice. I like to use colors that are perky but not gaudy. Some 8 yr olds are very fashion concious lol! I've made a few caps with Bernat Cotton Tots, it's very soft and a nice looking yarn at the same time. You could also do something funky with a soft eyelash yarn.
A nice idea too would be to work up a few extra and give them with a note saying the daughter can pass them along to other kids on the floor. She might get a kick out of having something to give to her new friends.
I hope she does well

I think Holly's ideas are great! I think I would also make a little pillow for her...crocheted home-made things I think would make her feel more comfortable in a hospital.

Oh!
I just found this on another page
<a href="http://strngbn.tripod.com/dammitdollpic.html" target="_new">****it doll</a> I bet the mom could use one of these about now.

A blanket would be a very good idea. Rick was in the hospital many times a few years ago, and one of his top complaints is that the hospital rooms were always very cold. You lay in a bed all day, still, and the cold just creeps in on you. The nurses are up and moving around and hot, so they crank the air conditioning. They would bring extra blankets, but he never could get warm. I think if you gave me a little push, I'd do this one. I'm feeling like it would be a good thing. Come on, give me a push. What colors are you thinking? <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/hug.gif" />

thank you for the link to bev's site. there is a link on there to www.headhuggers.org they have some good patterns for young girls. also an idea i think i will use:
a regular beanie style hat made from several strands of fun fir.
kinda looks like fun hair :)
that's pretty uplifting. i'm thinking a bright pink or purple for that. and just other girly colors for other things.
my husband emailed the father today to find out her favorite color and approximate sizes. i'll definately let you all know when i hear back.
thanks for your help on this.

julie and chelle - thank you so much for joining me on this one. i am so excited to get something to her. :bounce i just got an email back from her father and he says her favorite color is purple. she's a typical sz 8 with a 19"head (guess her mom measured :lol --- typical of a mom). in the 3 emails i've gotten from him, he has said thanks about 20 times. you can feel the gratitude. i can't wait to get started!
here's my email:

Ooooh Purple! That's my kind of girl!! :) My 3 yr old has changed her favorite color from pink to purple cause it's mommys favorite color :fluffy
I will email you for the address on where to mail the finished pillow. It's so good to "hear" the gratitude in emails, I love that feeling of making others happy!

Purple, cool! I'm thinking shades of purple then. Maybe a quick ripple or something more. I'll check my books. I do want to do two strands though, I think that would be warmer, don't you?
rebeccav
June 4th, 2004, 03:29 AM
i love ripple blankies. just a thought: one thing that i have found that looks really great together is the RH light and lofty (or baby L&L) with a strand of RH baby pompadour. that could get a bit pricey, though. i use a Q hook and they work up really quick. great for babies.
i just got back from WM. i picked up 3 skeins of lavender eyelash to make her a fuzzy skull cap (beanie). i'll start on it tomorrow.
for now, i gotta hit the hay. g'night.

I've just been informed that we have to make a trip to Sam's Club tomorrow. That means we will also be stopping into the Joann's nearby. I'll get the yarn there and start on it this weekend for sure. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" />

June 7th, 2004, 12:24 PM
i made little jordan a furry cap yesterday. it is really cute. lavender, fuzzy, soooooo soft and oh so warm. maybe even a little too warm for a texas summer, i hope not. i had to wait until this morning so my son could try it on and make sure it is the right size (you should have seen his face:| ). so now i will stitch in the ends and have my husband give it to her dad this afternoon. i used 2 strands of eyelash together. it was hard to explain to my 5yr old dtr why she couldn't have the hat and why it is going to this girl we do not know. man oh man, what her mother must be going through. :cry
on a happier note, the hat is done and i think she will really enjoy it. i have another skein left over so what i am thinking is that i will make a scarf out of a compliment and make the ends out of the eyelash. that way, when she is better, she can keep the cap for a winter hat and have a scarf to match!
what do you think?
how is everyone else coming along?
Julie
June 7th, 2004, 12:33 PM
I bought yarn yesterday, finally. I put a picture in my blog but the colors didn't photograph as well as they look in person, but you can get the idea. As soon as I finish this post, I will get up, do my routine chores, head to the store and rent a couple videos and work on it. My goal is to have it finished no later than Friday. Having announced that, I will have nothing but trouble finding time to work on it. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/oops.gif" /> Wish me luck!

I bought a 14" x 14" pillow insert and started making the "case" in purple homespun baby. The case will have the opening in the back to pull the pillow out when needing to wash.

Today was my day to go to the "hat club" where we make hats for cancer patients. A lady there had made the cutest hat for a young girl. it has stripes of different colors and has 18" braids coming out of the top. They say that the girls like this kind because it feels like they have hair to swing around.
I'll try to get the pattern next week and post it here.
I'll bet she would like lots of different colors and styles, a different one each day. ;)

YAY :cheer she received her hat yesterday and her dad says she really liked it! she was able to walk around the hospital last night and wore her hat. some of the other patients liked them and asked how they could get one :fluffy i'm so glad it made her comfortable:fluffy
one of the nurses is also taking up collections and fun fur yarn donations to send my way for them to give out to some of the other kids there. makes me feel all fuzzy :rollin :rock

Joy, chelle is making a pillow of of homespun (if i remember right)-so soft and snuggly, and julie made that beautiful blanket. the only thing i have done so far is make a beanie-skull cap style hat out of lilac fun fur. = i need to find a way to post a picture of that. anyway, there are several other little caps i found on Bev's Cottage site. i'll have to search for the link if you need it. but it's up to you. if you feel led, feel free to do whatever you think.:grouphug

I finished the afghan, I hope she will like it. I'm torn between adding fringe/tassels to it, what does anybody think? I'm worried it may be too fussy for a hospital stay with the fringe, but then I think an 8 year old girl might be thrilled to have it. What do you all think?

I got the pattern for the bear from Annie's Attic. Mine turned out smaller because I didn't have a crochenit needle. I just used a double-ended one. Then I used a smaller needle for the hat and flowers.
Thank-You girls, I'm glad you think it turned out ok.

It was part of the pattern. They have several bears to make on the same pattern book. I ordered a crochenit hook, so I could try making one with the right needle. I like doing things the right way, but I wanted to get the one above out, and didn't want to wait for my needle. The other bears are holiday bears.

Here are the 2 hats I made in the pattern I thought she might like. The Red, White and Blue one I knew would be too small based on the pattern info. I tried a larger hook and it is too big by about 1 ". So I'll donate those to the hat club tomorrow. I'll try a smaller hook and make another purple one.
Any ideas on how to finish off the top tassle? The pattern shows it about 3" long and sticking out. I left them much longer incase somebody has another idea.

If you wanted to make spirals, you could do a chain and then put 3 dc's in each chain. There's an example of what I'm talking about in my album crocheted wearables, called "sarah's hat".

Dot,
I love your idea of spirals. Can I do that with the ends I have now...make a chain of each one of them and then turn and attach yarn and do the dc back up to the top of the hat???
OR is there a way to attach the spirals after I make them?
Barbara

June 29th, 2004, 01:05 AM
<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/scratchchin.gif" /> You could probably do it with what you have there now, but I'm thinking they will be fairly short spirals. I did the spirals separate from the hat and attached them later. I think I'd try using the strands you have first though.
I forgot to tell you how much I love your little hat. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/thumbsup.gif" />

Thanks! I'm having such fun trying out new patterns.
I tried the spirals with my existing yarn...no good. not long enough. I'll try making the spirals first and then attach.
How long should the chain be?
bythehook
June 29th, 2004, 10:41 AM
I think if I were doing it, I would make one chain then length of the hat from top to bottom, work the dc's in that and when I put the last dc in the chain, (don't break off) make another chain slightly shorter, say 5 or 10 chains shorter, and then put the dc's in that and keep adding chain lengths in shorter increments until I had as many dangeling spirals as looks good to you. If you leave a long enough tail when you start and end, you can just draw the tails through at the top of the hat, and tie it on. I can't wait to see what it looks like when you're done.<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" />

holly, those hats were so absolutely darn cute!! i LOVE the pinky one. what kind of yarn did you use for it? it is GORGEOUS!
so here's the story: everytime anything has came in the mail, or i finish up a new hat or whatever for Jordan, i sit my kiddos down and let them look at the project and talk to them about the hard work you wonderful ladies put into it for this girl who is sick that you have never even met....yadda yadda... i talk to them about charity work and donations for the less fortunate.... blah blah --- great thing, right? well today, with that absolutely precious duck hat, my youngest claimed it. it was hilarious! he would not let me have it back... i had to bribe him with a bowl of applesauce "you can't have applesauce and the hat at the same time - give it up" so he did and i ran off and put it away --- he screamed for an hour after the applesauce was gone to have it back.... poor baby. think i'm gonna have to make him a duck hat:frog you mind sharing where the pattern came from? :D

Oh poor baby!!!
I didn't mean to make him cry <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/wha.gif" />
Ok, first, isn't that pink yarn the best?<img border=0 src="http://img66.photobucket.com/albums/v201/ilexmi/rainbowhat.jpg" /> I got it on Ebay from
this seller <a href="http://search.stores.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&sid=279584&fp=0&srchdesc=y&query=yarn" target="_new">Over The Rainbow Yarns</a> It's her "binder" cotton yarn. I've bought from her twice, she ships instantly and you get a lot of yarn for the price.
Next, the duck hat. <img border=0 src="http://img66.photobucket.com/albums/v201/ilexmi/duckhat.jpg" />
I didn't have a specific pattern, I just winged it. Winged it...I'm such a quack up <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/nahnahbooboo.gif" /> I saw this <a href="http://www.geocities.com/kmo159/chk.html" target="_new">CPC Chick</a> and was inspired. I made a basic round single crochet hat in yellow. For the beak I made a little oval in orange (chained 5-6, sc up one side and back down the other, increasing 2 sc in the end 3 sc) about 3 times. I folded it in half and sewed it by the middle onto the hat. I think I used a G hook.
I made a little fringe with the same Orange and stuck it through the hole in the top, secured that by sewing around the bottom. I frayed the strands so it was frizzy.
Last but not least, I took some navy blue and embroidered on the eyes.
I'm sorry I can't be very specific, I didn't write it down while I was doing it.

July 15th, 2004, 02:47 AM

oh, my vic will be 2 on thursday
here's an update from Jordan's dad:
I know everyone is anxious to hear about our meeting with Cook Children's Hospital this weekend. I'll give you the good news first. They do have several umbilical cord blood matches for Jordan. The one we will use has a very large count of stem cells. Preliminary testing is a 5 out of 6 match. They took some blood samples from Jordan to double check to make sure how close of a match it is. We should know today or tomorrow exactly how perfect it is. This means that she will only need to stay in the hospital for a couple of weeks and stay in Fort Worth for three months for observations when they do the transplant. By using cord blood, there is less chance of graft-verses-host disease. Now for the scary news. Jordan has a window of 6 months that she can not relapse out of remission. If she does there is nothing else they can do for her, which means she won't make it. After the 6 months, if she relapses, they can do another transplant. All though the second transplant has a much less successful rate. The longer she goes without relapse the better chance she has. We are scheduled for the next two weeks to prepare Jordan to be shipped to Fort Worth. She will have to have surgery for her teeth, sinuses, and replace her catheter. They will not have to give her any more treatments because they don't want to bring her immune system down any further. The transplant team will not have to give her radiation either, because she is showing signs of mental effects from the first time they gave her radiation. My family will head to Fort Worth probably the first or second week of August and I will travel there on weekends. Thank you for all your prayers and continued support. We will really need them in the coming months. If you have any other questions please feel free to call me or come by.

this is an email from Jordan's dad:
I have an update on Jordan. I think most of the information is pretty accurate except for some dates that might change. All of Jordan's test came back good except for her renal exam. The exam showed some gall stones in her gall bladder. The stones are what was causing Jordan to be septic. On the 16th, next Monday, they are going to do surgery to remove her gall bladder and replace her double lumen central line with a triple lumen and will keep her overnight for observation. Then on the 23rd, the following Monday, the doctors are going to admit Jordan into the hospital to start the chemo and possibly oral radiation to kill off her bone morrow. Then possibly do the transplant on September 1st. Now all these dates are dependant upon Jordan's body and how it reacts with everything they are planning to do to her. Mom is holding on pretty well but is in unfamiliar territory, so she is a little on edge. Can't possibly imagine why. From my family to all of yours, thank you for your continued support and care. God bless!

Hey ladies - what about doing something for Jordan's mom? I'm thinking basic stuff here, an afghan for her, something easy like 12" granny squares. We each could do a couple, a few squares, same color scheme and pattern so it would look nice. One of us could join them together when they are done, I'll even volunteer if you don't mind having them whipstitched together. It's a thought, feel free to shoot it down or suggest something else. She's away from home in a strange city in a super stressful situation, we could send it to Jordan's dad for him to take to her maybe. A gift from him and all of us, too? :thinking1

What a GREAT idea!! You know moms gotta be more stressed than the child herself! I will volunteer to attach the squares and do the border, unless you are really looking forward to doing it Julie. I can also attach a hang tag with everyone's names (and emails possibly too?) who participated in making the afghan for her.
I vote for caron simply soft yarn - it's cheap and very soft. Much better than RH in my opinion.

I will be going into town tomorrow and will see what I can find at michaels or walmart. Have we decided that it will be teal and lilac? Will we be using something like cream to tie the colors together? Let me know what we're doing!
Of course, we could pick one brand of yarn and then make the squares any color we'd like and it would truly be a comfort ghan, with any square pattern of choice (with all the squares needing to be 12"). ??

Who should I email?

I would also like to part of this, if there is still room. I lost track of this post and was really glad to find it again this morning to see how things were progressing. I'll keep them all in my thoughts and prayers. It can't be easy on Dad with all he has to do either. Is there an idea for him?

We haven't decided yet on how many squares we each need to make, it will depend on how many folks want to join. The more the merrier! I'm not sure about colors yet, either. LOL I'm thinking probably the teals and violets, we just need to settle on a brand and the specific colors.

Here are some pattern suggestions (listed in no particular order):
Dream Catcher (http://www.digitalgranny.com/va/showsquare.phtml?ID=589)
January Square (http://www.digitalgranny.com/va/showsquare.phtml?ID=590)
Caring Hearts (http://www.heartmadeblessings.org/patterns/caringhearts.asp) - if we did this one it would probably have to be a solid color square so the hearts would show up.
Bold Squares (http://www.texasdg.net/daynascrochet/pattern.asp?id=25)

of those, i like the bold and january squares.... i worry about others being too busy for her color choices????
i'm not much of a 'bright' color person (earth tones) so my thinking is maybe a light lilac, light teal and med. purple with the teal being the edging and such??????
i'm going to run to JA real quick and see what i can see......
i think, as long as we all use the same colors, 12" sq and edge in the same color (like the 63sq cal) it will look great if we choose different squares...the only thing is... layout. i'll plan this out if everyone will email me and let me know which square you want to do if we choose to go this route.

If we all do the same squre, I think I like the January square the best, then the Dream catcher square.
I also like the idea of each of us choosing our own squares to do so there is variety, but I think it would be nicer if we all used the same 1 or 2 colors so it coordinates. I'm a matchy-tachy kind of gal <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cutewink.gif" />

I agree that we should each do our own square choices but make them all the same size. What do you think of making the squares in your own color choice of the shades of teal and purple? Like, teal and purple are our set colors but we can choose what shade we want of those two colors (whether it be dark, medium, light - there's only one teal, but many shades of purple- like lilac, lavender, purple). I think that would be pretty and we dont all have to scurry around trying to find the exact same two or three colors. Believe me, I can make them all tie in together when they are being joined ;) It would still be the same yarn brand though.
Just throwing some ideas out there for everyone!

I think that's a great idea. I don't know about everyone else, but Wasl-Mart is the only place that's really close enough for me to run to just for a skein of yarn. If we could all choose our own shades, and brand and such, I think that would be easier. Does anyone have any idea how many squares each of us will be doing?
Julie
August 14th, 2004, 06:26 PM
So far there are 8 of us who have said we will make squares:
me
Antarachik
HollyM
MommaChelle
Rebeccav
TiffCrochets
DefinitelyDeb
Crochetis4fun
If we were to do 24 squares total, 4x6 layout, that would be three squares each.
I think choosing our own colors is a great idea, keeping in the teal and purple theme. My Wal-Mart isn't stocked so well that I would maybe be able to match the selection that was made. This will be better!

well, heck i am just now getting to a computer to read updates of what everyone is deciding. this is what i found:
Hobby Lobby has skeins of lion brand jiffy for jus 1.82 each. we can easily get 2/3 squares out of one. and they have great colors, one called country green - which is really more on the teal side, fisherman (cream) and lilac. i bought these 3. i have no way of getting them posted right now - i'm at my father in law's (this dial up waiting is killin me) but anyhow, it is acrylic - easy care and it has a bit of a halo so it is really soft. so i guess this is what i'll be using if we choose our own yarn.....?????

I just came back from town (we have 2 towns on each side of us) and there's no Joannes in either town. Walmart didnt carry caron perfect match and I didnt go to michaels since I didnt know what we're doing yet I figured that can wait. We are about to head to the Other town now (smaller). I will wait to get my yarn until we have it set as to what we're doing. I hear everyone likes the different shades idea - what about brand?

I think that yarn & those colors would be great.
I think the "Violet" would also tie in nicely w/out clashing.
Woohoo, I get to buy more yarn <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif" />
The <a href="http://www.lionbrandyarn.com/" target="_new">www.lionbrandyarn.com/</a> has color swatches for Jiffy. It wouldn't let me link to the direct page though, you have to click on "our yarns" and find the Jiffy section.
Julie, since this was your idea, would you like to make the final decision on if we are doing the same square or different ones? Seems like everyone is amicable to doing either.

I think, actually, that you all are fabulous! :)h Personally, I think if we all try to keep it to teals and purples, whatever square we choose to do should be fine. Pick whatever 12" square you want to do, I think it's going to look great if it is all the same color scheme. Maybe, as we buy our yarn, we can post which ones we buy. That way if I don't make it back to the store until Tuesday, and I know, for example, that Rebecca and Holly are using the same of one color, or Chelle is using a different color, I might try to buy that color too, for accent or something? I do have RH Ocean and Orchid, and so will try to use that at least a little in my squares. I also have a ton of RH Pale Plum, and I'll probably use that, too. I don't think using RH is necessarily a requirement, but it would be good if the squares could all be made of yarn of the same weight if possible. TLC, Caron... The LionBrand Jiffy is gorgeous, I wish I had easier access to Hobby Lobby. :worried

:clap Sounds good! I havent seen teal yarn :blush except for the small yarn picture on the caron website - do the country green and sage yarns fit into that category of a shaded teal?
I just went back to the caron site: here's the teal, juniper, and soft sage

I always think of teal as a kind of blueish-green color. The second row looks like it more to me. I like the teal and slate blue together, that looks good. And I'm already re-thinking my choice of RH Ocean... When I ran into Michaels yesterday they had pulled almost all the yarn into shopping carts and were rearranging. I know Caron has great teals, unfortunately I wasn't "allowed" to see any. :irked

We have a Ben Franklin and Michaels so I figure that I would probably be able to get what everyone or someone decides on. Are you all going to do one of your 63 squares? heheehehehe... Buellar... !! :clap
Okay, this is what I think and you all can stomp your feet and tell me no if you want to. I promise I'm easily swayed to any opinion.
1) Make any 12" square you want, it doesn't have to be one of the ones I listed above. Just make sure when it is done that it is 12".
2) The colors will be teal and purple. You can do all teal, all purple, or teal and purple. Just make sure the colors are teal and purple.
3) Try to stick to worsted weight yarn if you can, but it doesn't matter which one. Red Heart, Caron, Walmart brand, Patons, whatever. If the colors are good, go for it.
4) Since nobody has complained about doing three squares each, let's plan on that. Three squares each. If this is a hardship for someone time-wise, speak up and maybe one of the others can do more squares. :thumbsup If somebody new comes in and reads the thread and would like to join in, I'm sure we can figure out a way to include either more squares or other items.
5) Chelle and I both have volunteered to join the squares. I whipstitch my squares together, and Chelle does a really pretty openwork to join hers. Obviously only one of us can join them, so maybe we can flip a coin or tell a joke or something to decide. (And Chelle, if you really want to do it, you certainly can. I just feel bad about making you since I'm the one that suggested the whole afghan thing. I love the way you join your squares!)
6) I probably should set a deadline for getting all the squares completed and turned in. Right now, let's all try to get our yarn by this coming Friday, the 20th. I think we could have the squares easily done by the end of this month, but then I don't have kids and am not working right now so you can all kick me at will. :kick
7) Most importantly of all, this is a good thing. Pour all kinds of good thoughts and prayers into your squares, and hopefully we can help Christie and Jordan get through this trying time.

As people get their yarn, please do post what brand/color name you'll be using so anyone who wants to match can.
3 squares is certainly doable by me & I think an end of the month deadline is good too.
If for some reason we end up with extra squares, maybe a lapghan could be made out of them? If the joiner doesn't mind, of course!!! I'm sure there will be times Jordan is in a wheelchair so a lapghan could be a nice little something to have.

Very nice Julie! Does purple mean any purple color? And for those who can get teal, please do because I cant get that here.
I totally and completely volunteer to put the ghan together, I love joining squares :cheer You can mail them to me when they are completed. I think it costs about $1.18 to mail three squares in a manilla envelope (I just finished a square swap where we did 3 squares each). My email is crocheter [at] verizon.net for my mailing address. I will ask for opinions on edging colors, joining colors, and border colors when I receive all the squares - will take a picture of it in place (to post) before being edged and joined to make the color decisions easier. We could do a poll or something on it.
How nice this will be for Jordans mom - a ghan full of love! BTW, what is her moms name?
Julie
August 15th, 2004, 02:16 AM
Rebecca said her name was Christie. :)) Chelle, I will happily bow to your wishes to join the squares. I really DO like the way you join them.
Any purple color, shades of, whatever. Probably more of a blue-purple though, so it will blend with whatever teal we can find.
Holly! Excellent idea for doing a lapghan for Jordan! Let's hope for extra squares, and if we don't get any this time, maybe we can do one for her soon. :bounce

That's all I know to say about adding cream or green to the squares. If you want to for accent colors, go for it. I'm going to stick with teal and purple. I kind of like the idea of tone on tone, sort of, so I'm looking forward to using the two darker colors.

I think edging and joining colors will be up to Chelle for the most part, because she has offered to do the edging and joining. We can't really decide what to use now, until all the squares are made and she can lay them out. She said earlier she would take pictures, I think, so we can vote for best choices. Does that sound right to you, Chelle, or do you have another thought? :thinking1

my older sister is christi
oh course me, rebecca
my younger sister is rachelle (chelle is what we call her and how we spell it and everything.......)
LOL Rebecca, that is kinda neat :)
Holly, I know there's a post floating around here somewhere showing my joining method but I cant find it :shrug What I like to do is take each square and border them all in the same color (preferably a lighter color so the squares really pop/stand out from the other squares), then I edge that in one row of single crochet in the same color that I will be joining it with (a different color than the bordering), then that color would also be used for the first round of the afghan edging...with 1 or 2 other color used in the edging too.
Anyhow, to join the squares, when I do my sc edging I count the same number of sc for each side for every square - so they line up evenly when joined. Then I join the squares by doing a sc in first square, ch2, sc in same stitch on second square, ch 2, skip 1 space on first square, sc in next space, ch 2, skip 1 space on second square, sc in next space - etc. I join my squares to make the vertical strips, then I join the strips. I LOVE seeing squares come together in an afghan - ever since I thought up this joining method :thumbsup I put a picture of the joining in my photobucket album chainjoincloseup.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/chainjoincloseup.jpg) the red and blue are the squares, with the white border, with green edging and joining. What the white border also does is lets me make these squares the same size - sometimes the squares are off an inch or so from the other squares, so I make the border accordingly so the squares are the same size. This also makes for a bigger afghan :thumbsup
Julie, yes when all the squares are turned in, I will lay them out and take a picture so we can vote on colors to edge, join, and border the afghan with. I dont want to only put my opinion into the joining of the ghan, but for everyone who made squares to also be a part of the joining of the afghan.

<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" /> I bought my yarn at WM this morning. I got RH *Monet* [was it Julie that mentioned this?] and Lavendar. Oh so pretty! <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rowofhearts.gif" /> I'm proud of me too. I left the store with only the yarn I came for. Me too!
I got RH Dark Plum and also Orchid.
I didn't see anything in Walmart or AC Moore that said "Hi! I'm Teal!" in any brand. The closest thing IMHO, was RH Spruce. It's a little bluer than their sages. So I bought it of course <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cutewink.gif" /> I don't think I'll do a whole square in it but if I do a multi colored square I may include it.
Oh, and since I had a coupon burning a hole in my pocket I got Leisure Arts 99 Granny Squares to Crochet.
Did you all know there is a "63 MORE Squares" afghan book out?? Somehow that managed to leap into my cart.
Chelle, thanks for the joining explanation!! DS wants an afghan and I think I'll do it in squares. He picked out some sages and some dusty yellows (cornmeal was one, and then the next darker shade of that) I did nix the traffic cone orange lol! He's only 9 so his color coordination skills aren't so hot.
DH really is a good egg. I mean, it's not like I wouldn't have bought the yarn *anyway* but it's nice that he's supportive of my little obsession <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/sweat.gif" />

I picked up a skein of RH in Orchid and Monet today to complement my Med. Purple. Now the hard part is choosing a pattern! There are a lot of beautiful ones just calling out to be made! :)

While I was working on a square today, I had a thought. How about if each one of us duplicate one of our three squares (which would mean that we are making four) and make the lapghan for Jordan? If we made a duplicate square it would make a smaller version of Mom's and I thought that would be pretty cool. What do you think? Good idea...To MUCH work? :shrug

I do appreciate all the work that you will be doing for us all on this. If you want help, I would be willing. It's just that you do such a beautiful job joining. Three :cheer 's for Chelle.

P.S. I did find a varigated yarn by RH today with Teal in it. It's called Gemstones. I bought one and will use it in one of my squares. Probably the one I will double up on. :bounce

poop! i'm bummed about my first square. i took everything with me to my kiddo's (oldest 2) swim team junk.... and left my patterns at home:bang ----- i didn't want to waste the time, so i just did a traditional granny :irked i'm thinking of going back and adding a 3D rose to the center - but wanted opinions first.... that might throw off the look of the ghan???
the square is out of the med purp and i was thinking of the rose in the pale plum :huh

It's <a href="http://www.texasdg.net/daynascrochet/pattern.asp?id=63" target="_new">Sun Daze</a>.
The colors are Dark Plum and Orchid, I think. I've looked at so many purples now! <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif" />

I love the look of the dark plum with the orchid, Julie! I knew I should have nabbed the dark plum. Oh well, there always is tomorrow. Hehe :sheepjump

Two squares down!
I found both on CPC
The first is the Circles on the Square pattern. This is the first square I've ever done so be kind! I need to block it to see if it will straighten out. If not, I'll redo it.
<img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/ilexmi/circleonsquare.jpg" />
The 2nd is the Waldo's Puzzle square. That turned out to be not as scary as I thought it would be. I'm pretty happy with it.
<img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/ilexmi/waldosquare.jpg" />
Both are Dark Plum and Orchid, the teal is Spruce.

holly - i think they both look great!! and you'd be surprised to see how much joining will straighten out those pesky squares. you might wait to hear from chelle and see if she thinks it will be necessary.
i'm only 1 square complete -
plain 'ol granny :blush

Oh yes, joining squares definately helps with the pesky ones that refuse to straighten out! The squares look great!! I really like the waldo's puzzle square! Granny squares are Always great to have too. Everyone is doing a beautiful job on their squares! My squares will be in Orchid and Light Plum, I have a couple more rounds to do on the first square (it's 10" so far) then I will post a pic of it.

That Waldo Puzzle Square was really cool! I wouldn't mind doing a hole afghan with that pattern and color! I thought of doing one with a rose on one Rebecca, but I like traditional granny squares. I've finished three squares and will post a picture tomorrow. I'm to tired tonight!

Julie & Rebecca,
I forgot to say how much I like both of your squares!!
Rebecca, I think a rose would be fine if you feel like doing that!
I'm glad it looks like my first square is ok. I think I had some tension issues because I was having trouble figuring out what went where so it wasn't smooth crocheting lol!
The Waldo one went very smoothly. The only slightly tricky spot is making sure the rings are linked correctly and laying the right way before you start the background. Once they are in place, the outside of the square goes very easily.
I can't wait to see this whole thing finished!

Holly, your squares are gorgeous! It will straighten out, don't worry. It's one of the wonderful parts of joining squares. I love the Waldo square!!! <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rowofhearts.gif" /> I saw the pattern for it and was tempted but chickened out. I'm so glad you did it!!! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" />
Your square looks really good too, Rebecca! It wouldn't take too long to put the rose on it if you want to, and you could even go crazy and make it out of two colors if you want to. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif" />
I can't wait to see your squares, Chelle, Joy and Tiff! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/thumbsup.gif" />

August 17th, 2004, 03:22 PM
Chelle,
Yes, it is Red Heart. I got mine at AC Moore, have not been to Michaels lately. They did not have it at Walmart.
I liked it because it was just a little bit bluer than the RH Sages.

You know, we dont have anything around here! There's no Joanns, no Hobby Lobby, no AC Moore - we'd have to drive to Santa Barbara (about an hour) and even then I dont know if they have those stores. Michaels is more expensive, but the Red Heart price difference with Walmart isnt TOO bad, and I really like the look of the spruce with the purples. :)h

I finished my square - *and my second square
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/comfortghansquare1.jpg *http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/luv2crochet/crochet/comfortghansquare2.jpg
From the 99 granny squares booklet. I used Orchid and Light Plum. Im planning on putting plumberry variegated into my next square. *My second square is the same Orchid color as the lighter color of the first square, but look how different the camera picks up the color when next to a different color! The variegated is Red Heart Plumberry. Anyhow, my second square is done and I realized while I was making the square that it seemed familier and I was thinking someone posted a square just like it, and I was right! Deb! LOL I've had that Lacy Sun pattern in my binder for over a month waiting for the right opportunity to make it.

Joy, don't you dare rip that out, it looks terriffic! Where is the pattern from?
I have to pick my 3rd one to do. I think I'm going to do another Waldo for the lapghan. I did take a square break today. Had to take DS to see the Yu-gi-Oh! Movie and knew I wouldn't make it through if I actually had to pay attention to it lol! I started the first few rounds of a baby blanket at home so it would be established enough to do it in the dark <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/nahnahbooboo.gif" />
This is the pattern <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/va3/heartfeltangels/littlestarafghan.html" target="_new">star afghan</a>
It's really easy & cute. I'm doing it in 3 different colors of Cotton Tots.

I will be on the hunt for the spruce yarn this weekend when we go school clothes shopping for the kids (fun!). I want to have that yarn color as a border/edging choice and want to have it on hand for that just in case. I may need to pick up more plum too since Im close to being out of that and can pick a darker plum if necessary. I have another FULL skein of orchid :) Anyways, I just want to be sure I have access to the colors we choose to use.
