Does anyone have a Free pattern for a summer top, with then straps, I have seen one in magazine adds, but it is for knitting, I know it should be simple, but I really like to work off a pattern, and I also would like suggestion of what yarn to use, I live in florida so it must be lite weight. :clap

I found a few links you might want to check out. The first link is not a free pattern but I think it is quite beautiful.

I was looking for something like this too. I just want to make a tank top out of worsted weight cotton.
I found this pattern from Lily

I totally know where you're coming from there! hehe. I'm attemping a cap-sleeved sweater from Crocheted Sweaters that I think will work okay with my uhhh chesty self. I think it could also be adjusted to a tank top pretty easily. :)
[not a free pattern obviously, but very cute.]

Actually, I've been trying to find one that is more appropriate and it is rather difficult.
There was a nice one in last month's CROCHET! magazine, more like a shell.

Oh, and I don't know if you have seen this one. Size given up to 38, but I think it's easy enough to change. Length can be increased easily. If I was to do it, I'd make the straps wider, works a lot better on "chestier" girls.

(I've done their sleeveless turtleneck pattern, it was easy to follow, and alter)

aww, this is cute. I would definitely need it MUCH longer :) I got a belly to hide. hehehehe I love this top though. I'm not confident in my abilities to alter something though. Someone can MAKE a pattern for a tank top that is crocheted. I'd LOVE that :) Especially if it were for the bigger girls. Hehehehe

I think it would work fine on anyone, chesty or not, using a strapless bra. It is a very flattering style.

I've seen people work spaghetti strap tanks in the round. Basically they make a chain a length that goes all the way around the body, join it, and then work a tube in the round. Once it's the length they want it, they add the spaghetti straps. For me that would need a little more shaping at the waist and chest, but you could probably do that with some stitch or hook size adjustments.
There are two tanks in 24 Hour Crochet Projects and I keep thinking of another pattern I've seen but can't remember where...

That is what I was concerned about, if I should crochet in the round, or make two pieces and stitch the sides????? then add straps, I also wonder if I need to increase on bottom and decrease other areas, I think I would just make a huge mess of things, doing it with out a pattern, I am a great crocheter, but I need the pattern. I just might give it a try, but also wonder what type of yarn to use, cause I think it would need to give a little.

Crochetme has a great tutorial for shaping (http://www.crochetme.com/Feb_Mar_2005/reads_waist_shaping.html) - it's written about sweaters, but it would work for any kind of top, I think.
Hope that helps some!

I just read that tutorial for shaping, that settles it,I amnot making a top, jeeze what a job, see that is why I want a pattern, I could never just start making one, then decr or increase, where I am suppose to. So I am still pattern searching (note I hate to pay for patterns), that is my problem, lol, but thanks for your help.

What's that about? I have also been looking for a pattern for a sensible, simple, sleveless top and haven't found anything yet that doesn't look like Victoria's Secret or Golden Girls, LOL. It's amazing that out of all of those patterns there are none that are just simple tanks.

I would make a big mess out of the shaping too. I need a pattern. Not good on my own :)

I found the one I want, but of course it is knitted, I hate that. It is on the Coast and Clark site, made in TLC, I just see no reason why they could not show a crochet pattern for that, it is just what I want. Sure hope one of knitters friends sees this and knows how to transform into crochet, :clap

Very funny, all in Greek, but it sure is a super nice tank top, If I thought I understood the measurement chart they showed I could figure it out, but I really prefer a pattern, I havce no confidence in my self.

okay, first - gather some supplies: 1-2 yards of rolled paper (or paper table cloth-these are super cheap)
pencil
shirt that you like the "fit of"
COURAGE
1. put your shirt on, mark with a pin where your bra straps are
2. take it off and smooth it out over your paper
3. trace the sides of your shirt
4. mark for your shoulder straps using your pins as a guide
5. mark where the ending is - or trace the bottom
6. mark the space you'd like your neckline to be (or trace)
take the shirt off the paper and sketch out your neckline and bottom hem (if needed
VOILA! you now have a pattern.
make it as simple as possible. you can double crochet, right? you know how to increase in dc? you know how to decrease in dc?
make it in 2 pieces.
start at the bottom making a chain 4 chains wider than your paper pattern. (2 for turning dc and 1 for each side seam)
write this number down!
work your way up, just as if you're making a scarf. when the pattern makes a decrease, you do too :)
always making 1 as the first stitch and 1 as the last stitch and any others needed evenly spaced through the row. (refer to beginning chain -2 for turning dc the number you now have is how you will determine the "evenly spaced bit")
do any increases the same way.
make the front and back this way. put them RIGHT sides TOGETHER, tightly whipstitch your side seams. turn back to RIGHT SIDE OUT
you now have a tube. mark the straps locations.
rejoin your yarn at what will be the arm pit, single crochet to the marked stitch (working from side to front), chain the length you need the strap to be (try it on). when you have the length you need, begin to sc again at the marked stitch on the opposite side of tank (back) sc your way back to the first sc, join, finish off.
repeat for next strap work from side to front, over shoulder to back and join.
join yarn again at center back, sc around to shoulder strap(chain), sc into chain across to front, sc across neck, up chain for opposite shoulder, on 2nd half of back, join and finish off.
you should now how your very own custom spaghetti strapped tank :hook
:cheer :clap :cheer
be proud of you! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!

That's a great idea, Rebecca! I did that with one of my daughter's shirts to make her another and it worked really well. I'd definitly recommend this method to someone wanted to make their own shirt.

Even though it's called Toddler's Chunky Cotton Tank (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=9234.0) , I think that it could be converted to fit an adult. I also think that the straps can be made thinner with no problem.

Looks like crochetkim has a simple halter too that would be nice. If you don't want to pay for a pattern, how about making a simple tube, then adding straps--they can start at the center and come out at a V, or they could be placed evenly on either side of the tube--use a tank you have as a guide for placement.
Good luck!

I purchased the spider web skirt from Josi Hannon, she has software on her site that will develop a pattern specific for your size you put in the parameters, and it for a tank but the straps are not extremely thin I've been looking for the same ....as well but try it you might like it, and the workings are pretty basic single crochet too so see if it works for you :clap Ivanna/musegimm

I'm making this right now in TLC Cotton Plus. I have the back done and about 3/4 of the front. I did choose to make it about 2" shorter to give it a more modern shape and will do the shell bottom round like in the pattern, but then plan on adding a sc round with picots along the bottom for a little extra detail.

I made the summer top in this book on page 48. I used Coats & Clarks "Aunt Lydia's Quick Crochet" cotton (worsted weight). The same color as the "off the shoulder" top pattern. http://www.coatsandclark.com/fun_and_free/crochet_thread/apparel.htm
It looks just like the crochet yarn Melissa Leapman used in the book. It fits through the bust, but it's a little wide in the hips (which is not the way it should be, since I am wider in the hips than the bust....) Anyway, I think I would start with fewer chains in the foundation row, and then do the decreases every 4th row instead of every other row for the bottom rows.
I'll try and get a picture posted.....

Light Brown Top (Translated from Russian to English to Crochet)
(My Russian friend, Lillia did her best to translate this pattern from Russian to English. She does not do Crochet, however, and some of the terms were way too technical for her to be able to translate…...)
Size: 42-44 (European) Size: 8-10 US
Thread: 250 grams of 100% cotton, 800 meters (872 yards) total,
alternatively – use a cotton blend 50 grams, 158 meters (172 yards) each
Gauge: 26 stitches by 14 ½ rows = 10 x 10 cm (4” x 4”)
Hook: # 2 Notions: 6 buttons (the kind with shanks)
For the main design, the number of chains is divided by 8 +1, plus 3 chains for turning chain. Follow the schematic. Do rows 1 to 10 one time. Body is rows 11 and 12 – do 38 times, then row 13 one time, then repeat rows 14 to 19 until end of crocheting.
[see schematic]
BACK:
Foundation row: chain 113 + 3 chains for turning, and continue with main design.
Main Design:
1. 1 dc in third ch from hook, and 1 dc in each ch across. Ch 4 and turn.
2. Sk next dc, 1 dc in third dc. Ch 1, sk 1 dc, 1dc in next dc. Repeat across. Ch 3 and turn.
3. 1 dc in next ch, dc in next dc – (do 1 dc in each st across). Ch 3 and turn.
4. Repeat row 2.
5. Repeat row 3.
6. Repeat row 2
7. Fan Pattern: Ch 4, *sk (ch, dc, ch) and crochet 3 dc in next dc, then ch 3 and do 3 more dc in same dc (fan made). Sk (ch, dc, ch) and do 1 sc in next dc, ch 1.* Repeat from * to *, ending with ch 1 and then dc in 3rd ch of turning chain in row below. Ch 7 and turn.
8. **Sk (ch, 3 dc, ch) and sc in next ch. Ch 4. Sk (ch, 3 dc, ch) and dc in next dc. Ch 4.** Repeat from ** to ** across, ending with dc in ch 3 of turning chain in row below. Ch 4 and turn.
9. Repeat row 2.
10. Repeat row 3.
11. Body: 1 dc in 2nd dc and 1 dc in each dc 10 more times (ch 3 counts as 1st dc + 11 dc = 12 dc made). Ch 1 and 1 dc in next 12 dc. Repeat across, ending with dc in 3rd ch of turning ch in row below. Ch 3 and turn.
[Note: somewhere in here you are supposed to switch back to Fan pattern - see schematic.]
12. Repeat Row 11, but start increasing width of back by adding 1 stitch on either side of every 4th row – do this six times (1 stitch each side by every 4th row for six times = 125 stitches). Continue repeating Row 11 until piece measures 10 inches.
13. Shaping Armholes: When piece measures 10” (approx. 37 rows), shape armholes by decreasing in every other row – do 3 decrease stitches each side, then 2 decrease stitches each side, then 1 decrease each side. (105 stitches.)
14. Shape Neckline: When piece measures 17” (approx. 62 rows) begin shaping neckline, finishing each side separately. Use two markers to mark center 71 stitches. Crochet over to first marker, ch 3 and turn. Continue in pattern until piece measures 18 1/2”. Fasten off this side. Connect yarn to piece at marker on other side of neckline and continue in pattern until piece on that side measures 18 12” too. Fasten off.
Left Front:
1. Chain 57 + 3 for turning, and continue with main design.
2. Repeat steps 2 through 11 the same as back until piece measures 10” (approx 37 rows).
3. Shape Armholes: decrease same as back (but only on left armhole side of piece).
4. Shape Neckline: after piece measures 11” (approx 40 rows), start decreasing on right side of Left Front piece in every other row – do 6 decrease stitches in every other row 5 times, then do 2 decrease stitches every other row 2 times. [Note: looking at pattern, decreases might need to be done in every row – see schematic.] Finish same as back.
Right Front:
Repeat as mirror-image of Left Front.
Finishing:
Stitch side seams and shoulder seams.
Finish edges. [Note: here the translation breaks down somewhat as my Russian friend does not speak crochet and the terms are very technical….] The best I can tell is that you do three rows of single crochet around the piece, then a fourth row where you do chain loops (ch3, sk 1 ch, sc in next st) around piece. You make 6 evenly spaced button holes on the Right side in the second row of single crochet (ch 3, sk 3 st) 6 times.
Covered Buttons: There were directions for making covered buttons, too, but these were way too technical for my friend to even attempt. The best she could come up with is that you ch3 and then sl st into 1st ch to make a circle….. It seems as though you do at least 4 rounds, then you put the button in the middle, pull on the thread to draw up the edges of the circle and secure. (You could probably adapt any covered button instructions for this.)
Mark placement for buttons and sew on 6 buttons.
