Eddie Bauer has some nice crochet items right now that I love. They are beyond my capabilities to figure out how to make, but I must have that scarf! I have no idea where to even begin. Any ideas how to go about making it? Thanks!

You have great taste! I loved all three pieces.
I can't begin to tell you how to make the tops, but here's a link for potholders done in the basketweave stitch. http://www.jimsyldesign.com/~dishbout/cpatterns/basketweave.html (http://www.jimsyldesign.com/%7Edishbout/cpatterns/basketweave.html)
It would be a matter of changing yarns to achieve the one in your link.
Here's instructions for another way to do it: http://www.knitting-and.com/crochet/tunisian-intarsia.htm

I have done basketweave stitches before and I like doing them. What throws me off about this is if you zoom in close it looks like with each color block the stitches go a different direction?! Yet they do not look like individual squares put together. I can't figure out how that is done.

basketweave on the diagonal, that's all.
turn your head to the left a little, and it's regular basketweave.

You could do the scarf using entrelac crochet as well. If you don't know how to do Tunisian crochet you get to learn that to do the the entrelac.
The tunic has what's called the spider stitch (I think.) There is a pattern for a spider cardigan in July/Aug Crochet! You might be able to find it online as well.

that isnt really a basketweave st it is enterlac in crochet, basically you crochet a little square then you turn and crochet down one side until that second little square is the same size and turn and go down another side and slip into the sides of the little box next to where you are working so that is remains solid, and continue this until you have a scarf.

Does anyone have good links to clear directions somewhere for how to do entrelac??

If you scroll down some you can find an entrelac tut here. (http://www.hookyarnandneedles.com/Techniques/)
If you do a search her on the 'ville you should find more threads with some help as well as this came up a last year.

Wow I can see I have quite a bit to learn before tackling something like this! Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to have to read up on entrelac and experiment some. Wouldn't you know I finally find something that I would like to make for myself and I will have to wait a bit while I learn some techniques to make it. Then I will have to sort out how to deal with all of those colors! I wish I fell in love with something that had a clear cut written pattern!
Thanks everyone for all of the links. I have alot of reading and practicing to do.

To me, the scarf looks like it was done in the Corner Start Stitch (Diagonal Crochet Stitch) using dc sts and you can see the stitch pics along with a written tutorial here:

I don't think I would want to make the scarf using all those colors though - you might be better off using a varigated yarn or maybe a few different varigated yarns to try to duplicate the color effect if you really want it?

:cheer Entrelac is better knitted and is not as hard as it looks. Just fiddly.:cheer
I looked at a jumper pattern for many years before I finally decided to give it a go and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was, as long as you are working straight. Impossible to increase or decrease.
Maybe you can find some nice muted self-striping yarn which will create a similar effect without changing colours.
Have fun.

Well, I tried the basketweave pattern for my DIL, she asked if I could make it. I inspected the original, spent hours fiddling around and finally concluded it would be better to buy it! If anyone figures it out, please tell me. Zaraliz

Just for reference, this is the basketweave stitch and it's really easy:

The entrelac isn't as hard as it looks. And I'd personally argue that it's "better" knitted. I think it's up to one's personal preference and capabilities. I'm doing a diaper bag entrelac now and have done several other pieces with the stitch. Easy and attractive.
Edited to add: I LOVE that scarf! The colors are gorgeous. That'd be a great way to use up scrap yarns!

Having seen the actual scarf in the store, in my opinion it is not basketweave or diagonal stitch, nor is it entrelac done in Tunisian stitch. It is entrelac done in double crochet and is extremely time consuming and fiddly - all those ends to darn in! Mabye a good compromise would be to do the diagonal stitch in a varigated yarn. I shudder to think what those Third World crocheters get for making these scarves. Zaraliz

Wow, I don't think I could make the short sleeve cardigan w/linen/cotton yarn for the $19.99 it's selling for! Great buy!!

No you probably coudn't costwise. Are you truly getting something of quality? I have seen things that are crocheted and mass produced and they just are not as nice as something hand made with quality fibers.

Ya, I'd take it any day for $19.99 - may order it or the other one actually or the 3rd crocheted sweater I found at eddie bauer! They are sooooooo NICE!

I think they are just trying to unload that particular cardigan. The regular price is $54.50, discounted to $19.99. A great buy, but like sammimag said, I would want to look at its quality in person before paying even $19.99 (yes, I'm a starving student).

Eddie Bauer is known for quality items - and you can always return it if not to your liking - just in case I can talk you into getting one too for that price, smile. Hugz, Louise
