Need help writing pattern

I am writing a pattern for a stuffed giraffe to give my dad for his birthday. I made the legs and something that could be a body, but I'm trying to figure out how to attach the head and neck without making it look really weird. I first tried to make the body and neck one piece, but I couldn't get that to work either. Anyone have any ideas? This is the first pattern that I've tried to write.

I would make the head and neck as 2 pieces and leave both ends of the neck open to attach to the body and head. I've written a tutorial for how to join the neck (open) piece to the body/head (closed) piece here: http://www.planetjune.com/blog/joining-amigurumi/
