I just got a call from a gal who wants to take a joint class with her 13 y/o son next week. So I'm on the lookout for guy friendly patterns, that would be suitable for a newbie/beginner. I know there is a skull in the SNB Happy Hooker book, and will look more closely at that today, but thought I'd ask here too.

Drew *thecrochetdude* If you happen to read this: I told the mom about you last week when she stopped into my shop. She had mentioned wanting to get her youngest son to crochet, as one of her older sons does a bit. And I mentioned that perhaps if he saw some other guys that crocheted, it may help. So anyways, I gave her your blog address and told her to check you out and show her son. Well, she told me on the phone when making the class, that he loved the stuff you make and that's why he wanted to learn... from seeing your site. **Thought I'd give ya a bit of an ego boost! Everyone likes complements**

Thanks in advance all!

Is he into sports? How about a hackey sack?

Although they're made with thread, maybe you could bump it up to size 3 thread or sport weight yarn.

A scarf would be a good beginner project and there are a lot of patterns to choose from.

Beanie and simple hat patterns are numerous as well.

How about things based on T.V. shows, movies, or video/computer games?

What about a stuffed critter of some sort? There are patterns out there for insects, etc.

Depending on his style, what about a messenger bag?

Since you mentioned the skull, you might find something in the Halloween section of pattern directories like CPC.

You may want to check out http://www.monstercrochet.com/Patterns.html There are patterns for severed fingers, a Psychotic Tomato…

Have you browsed the crochet section (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=354.0) at Craftster.org? Or the crochet blog (http://www.craftzine.com/blog/archive/crochet/) of Craftzine.com? Etsy also has a lot of fun and interesting patterns.

Try an ipod or cell phone holder? If he's into Harry Potter, maybe a house scarf.
