I wanted to add a charity that I recently started participating in. It is called Hugs for Homeless Animals Snuggles Project.
Basically you make snuggle blankets for animals living in shelters. You can search the site for a list of shelters in your area and in other countries that participate.
Please check it out.

My local shelter is on the list I'm gonna use up my huge yarn stash on this charity. I look at my chihuahuas on their blankies and feel so sad that animals don't all have a loving warm home to go to:cry .

I am so glad to see someone responded to this!! I think it is sad as well. I know their our lots of people who need items this year but lets not forget about the animals, they really need a warm place to sleep.

I guess my question is...do these shelters wash the blankets? I mean, I know it would be nice for the dogs to have...but on the other hand, I can see the shelters saying "no thanks" because then they will need to be washed occasionally...just a thought....what do you all thinK?

Depends on the shelter. Many use towels which need to be washed anyway, so they welcome the blankets. I would be sure to use sturdy yarn like Red Heart and secure your ends very well since they won't have the time to wash them on delecate. The other good thing is you can use up any "ugly" yarn, the animals aren't too picky when it comes to color <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cutewink.gif" />
Check with your local shelter. If they can't use them, check with the snuggles project page. They have lists of shelters that will accept them.

All the shelters listed on the Snuggles Page accept blanket donations and according to my shelter, the blankets stay with the animals when they adopted so they will have something familiar to take with them to their new home.
