Has anyone crocheted a Spongebob doll? If so, I'd love to get the pattern from you.

Thanks,
Annette

As previously stated by AMYS:

Crochetville's guidelines do not allow links to or any type of discussion about any unlicensed patterns of trademarked characters that may exist somewhere, to protect Crochetville from charges of contributory copyright or trademark infringement. So you won't be able to find links to any free patterns here. :no

Annette, SpongeBob is a trademarked and copyrighted character. In order to distribute patterns of him and other characters legally, a designer would have to obtain the proper permissions from the copyright/trademark owner. This usually involves expensive licensing arrangements that independent designers just can't afford, especially if they were just giving their patterns away.

Additionally, many large companies have very stringent requirements for companies seeking licensing arrangements to meet before they'll even take time to respond to their inquiries about licensing.

This is why there are very few licensed patterns for any trademarked/copyrighted characters available anywhere. And as I was quoted above, our guidelines don't allow links to or discussion of how to find any unlicensed patterns that might exist somewhere for various characters.

For some reason, many people don't realize these issues are of concern when they come here looking for these sorts of free patterns. There have been an unusually large number of threads this week from people looking for free patterns of various trademarked/copyrighted patterns. Just to help you feel you're not the only one who's asked this question, only for us to have to tell you that we regretfully can't help you. :)

I have a question on that, though. What if someone buys the pattern, does it up and decides they hate it? Can they not give it away (the pattern itself, not a photocopy) if someone wants it? Or perhaps if we know where it's being sold (legally), can we post that? (Like a link to Amazon.) Is that OK?

First of all, as far as I'm aware, there is no licensed pattern of Spongebob available anywhere. If you think you know of a place where there IS a licensed pattern, please send me the link first, so I can check it out and make sure it really is a licensed pattern. There are so very, very few licensed patterns for trademarked/copyrighted characters, that links to legitimate sources for them are quite rare.

Now, let's switch gears and move on to a pattern that someone has purchased from a legitimate source. If you purchase a pattern and no longer want it, you may give your original pattern away or you may resell it. However, if you do this, you may not keep a copy of it for yourself.

When you own a pattern, it is legal to make a working copy of it for yourself, so that you can mark it up or whatever without ruining your original. But if you give the original pattern to someone else, you must destroy any working copies you have made so that you no longer have the pattern in your possession in any form. (Other than a completed item you might have made from the pattern.)

Thank you Amy. I've never seen a SB pattern, although it would be great. :) My question was more of an "in general" one, since I will be weeding out cross stitch patterns and such over the next few weeks. :)

Thank you!!!

I made my own pattern as I went making a SB. I used an empty cigarette hard pack as my square, dangling legs and arms, & a small red tie. My granddaughter grabbed it as soon as it was done.
