If I need colors, I go to Ben Franklins variety store.

On line I use Herrschners. Mary Maxim is not bad either.

Try this web site, maybe you have a Ben Franklin near you. They have hardware, variety and craft stores.

Just wanted to pop in and say that there are some AMAZING colours here in Australia of the thread variety. I'd be happy to look into them for you. I wish I was bettter at thread crochet, I would use them more.

Where do ou all get your thread from?

Locally I don't have too much of a selection, either. I order a lot from Herrschners (http://www.herrschners.com/), Lacis (www.lacis.com), and knitting-warehouse (http://www.knitting-warehouse.com/).

Is there a particular brand/color/size you're looking for? I order Cebelia from Herrschners and knitting-warehouse, and I recently ordered cordonnet flora from Lacis.

Opera is probably my favorite thread but I get it locally at AC Moore. My Michaels/JoAnns have some thread colors, but not very many, and most of it is SouthMaid (ick) or Royale (which is okay).

If you are looking for something I can pick up locally, we can work something out. :)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Bec, that would be great. How do you convert Australina prices to American? I am looking for just...pretty colors...bright....I just haven't seen too much here in the stores that has inspired me. I want to do more crocheting with thread but I need something pretty to make me motivated! Let me know what you find next time you go out, and round about how much they are a ball? Thanks!
Jess, let me look up those names and see the colors. I really can't find any pretty thread. All I can find is Royal and Aunt Lydias. Which is fine for some things, and they have a couple pretty colors. I don't have AC Moore here. I will pm you when I peek at them, ok? Thank you!!

Hi Jessi,
Here is a currency converter I got off Yahoo! (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=4.50&from=AUD&to=USD&submit=Convert) I've seen really bright colours as well as veriegated ones in pastels and other variations. Check these ones out:

I think they cost around $3-4 AUD. Next time I go I will investigate further!! :sher

This is the best little currency converter I've found online:

Re threads, I'm all ears too, as I've also been looking for more variety. It's been years since I've tried my hand at thread crochet. I absolutely adore doilies, but don't really have much use for them here - I am thinking more along the lines of accessories and, when I'm feeling really ambitious, perhaps some clothes - thread seems like it could easily be used for summer-weight tops, maybe even a skirt, with the right pattern, especially with the right colors.

Maybe because it's summer, but I've noticed that some of the Hobby Lobbies and Michaels in my area (haven't had a chance to visit JoAnns yet) have begun to somewhat expand their selections of threads and lighter-weight yarns, though the selection is still not as extensive as I'd like it to be. I am hoping to pick up some new variegated #10 thread from HL on my way home tomorrow or Monday, once the paycheck's in the bank.

And of course, I also have the lovely thread I got from Jackie to play around with... :hook

[hope this doesn't post twice - got a wierd error when I hit submit, trying again]

Those are so pretty! I don't see that kind of thread here

I get most of my thread from AC Moore and Michaels. I like Opera, Cebelia, and Tradtions.

I also get some of my other threads from these online sources...

http://www.pkcrochet.com/store.html (http://www.pkcrochet.com/store.html--Patti) Patricia Krisotffersen's site. She has some of the coolest doily designs as well.

Lone Star Yarns (http://www.lonestaryarns.com/crochetthread.html) I've been ordering from Lisa for years. Many times, I can order on a Friday, and get my items on Monday. I like the Optima Thread (http://www.lonestaryarns.com/optima.html) a lot too.

Is that where you got your clover soft touch thread hooks? :)

[I've been wondering, and meaning to ask and she has them!]

I got my thread Clover Soft Touch hooks--size 6, 8, and 10--on eBay several years ago, and I really like them. I make most of my doilies with my size 6.

I have anchor lifestyle threads here in a lot of different colours and in variegated ones. these are manufactured here in the Philippines. If you remember Jackie Lim posted a pic here in one of the threads.

Ok, so I think I am getting scared away from the whole thread thing. I have a ball of Aunt Lydias here and so I tried making a bookmark....how do you all have the patience to work with the thread? I mean, the tiny needles....the thin thread....I think I am going to have to finish my WIP's and then work only on the thread thing.......because everything made with thread looks so pretty, and I'd love to do it.....*sigh*

It took me some time to get used to it. At first, I kept splitting the threads. Had a very hard time holding onto the the thread, couldn't see the stitches, held onto the hook extremely tightly so my hand would hurt after a short while...but I eventually got used to it, and completed some things and loved them, and did some more, and it got easier and easier, and now, yarn feels very weird, way too big and bulky, but I can crochet with it a lot faster now =)

Bec, for some reason, the first time I viewed your post, I couldn't see your pic, now that I can...whoa...those are great! See, I don't see anything like that here. Those colors are waht I am talking about...and maybe a varigated or something. Why don't theyhave those here, or maybe I am just not seeing them.

I did see those pics that Jackie put up, I thought they were so awesome! You're lucky to have places like that near you!

I guess I will just have to get some pretty, inspiring yarn, and chain myself to the chair :hook
