Good scarf pattern for thick and thin wool yarn?

I know I could do something like hdc....but I'd like to do something interesting but not have too many issues with places where the yarn is thin.

Am I asking a stupid question? :think

I made this as a gift - it's crocheted with a very open stitch, and then strands are woven. I tied them together at the end for a large tassel effect. The recipient really liked it - at least to my face!
