My pastor asked my group to make stoles for our church. Has anyone done something like this before? A stole is kinda like a scarf. I might just do a single crochet scarf for it, but I want to see if there are any other ideas out there first.

You're making a prayer shawl. Krystal16 made a post about stole threads - i'll see if I can find it. I can't but there's a good list of links here

I think that's called a 'Mantle'. You might try googling that instead. All the ones I've seen are embroidered.

Most will be too fancy/lacy/etc. for what you want. You might find something plain enough to work for you though.
Here are some hand woven stoles. Might give you an idea. Of course you might have to have certain colors and things for yours. Click on the names next to hand woven clergy stoles:

There's a nice cable scarf that would work well as a mantle in the December issue of Crochet Today: http://www.crochettoday.com/articlepage.aspx?articleid=80
