Greetings everyone! :waving
I started crocheting about seven months ago while preparing for my second amputation. I wanted something that I could enjoy while on bed rest during my recovery process. Although I am still very much a novice, it's been a wonderfully rewarding and fulfilling hobby for me. Not to mention an awesome stress buster! :)
I am going to be having another operation on November 21st, 2007. I would like to find a beginner friendly take-along type of project that I could work on during the recovery process and all of the time spent in my doctor's offices.
I just can't decide what to pick! So, I thought I would post and see if anyone has any suggestions or advice on a beginner/novice friendly project for me. :)
The stitches I know so far are the single crochet, double crochet and half double crochet. I am looking forward to learning more! I would appreciate any and all suggestions! Thanks for taking the time to read my post!
Happy Hookin' everyone! :hook

That's mostly all the stitches you need to know. Everything else is a form of those. ;)
What kind of project did you want?
An afghan?
You could make a box stitch afghan in fall colors:

This square would be beautiful in fall colors:

Or this one:

How about a wreath? Only the flowers part will be take along-able:

Pillows:

When I go to doctor's office I like to take along squares to make for afghans. You just pick a pattern you like, and go for it! It is mostly mindless crochet after you have done one and figured out the pattern. You can make a lot of them and put them together to make an afghan. I love the portibility of it, and they are small, 6 or 7 inch and don't take up much room in a totebag. I hope your recovery is fast! There are tons of patterns on the net, or get yourself a book on how to make them. :manyheart

I am sorry that you have to go to have surgery, and I hope for a speedy recovery.
A fun project is to make something using the ideas from the crochet a long-Van Goghs Closet. You crochet with 2 threads of yarn and a large hook(a K is good)You can do one row of single, then next in double, next in hdc-then change one color and follow the pattern for 3 rows.(You can make this as large or small as you want(I am making an aphgan)Use your favorite colors-and the fun part is how amazing the colors blend and you can use as many colors as you want.Look at the thread on the crochet a longs and you will see many pretty things made with this idea!(It is explains how to do this in much more detail.)

Scarves are an easy thing to do also. I like making simple ones by just doing sc, or hdc stitches. Great to use up scraps too! Good luck with your surgery, I do hope the recovery is quick! Michelle

A very big :ty to those who offered suggestions and well wishes for me! I appreciate them very much and all of your ideas have helped to spark my creative wheels!
Michaels craft store has some new yarns in stock and they are on sale! I've decided to choose a project and make something from one of those yarns. I am looking at making an afghan. Has anyone ever tried cashmere yarns? Are they good for making blankets? I love the texture of cashmere so I'm thinking of doing that.
Again, thank you for the suggestions! C'ville is such a wonderful place with fantabulous members! :manyheart
Happy Hooking all! :hook

I've actually fondled that Bernat cashmere yarn and it's really, really yummy! I think an afghan would be wonderful out of it! (Though I don't know what the washing instructions are for that yarn....)

How about a quilt afghan? The individual squares that make up the large square sections of the "quilt" are only about 2 1/2 inches square. It's busy work rather than having to concentrate on a pattern. You could use your waiting room time to crank out bunches of the little squares, and then during your recovery time you could assemble them and stitch them together. There are some GORGEOUS quilt afghan patterns available free of charge from Welcome to the Happy Yellow House! (http://www.happyyellowhouse.com/) You could even change the suggested colors to fall colors if the quilt you like is in colors other than autumnal ones.
Best of luck to you with your surgery. I hope the operation itself and your recovery are uneventful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Christmas is fast approaching. Do you have gifts to get? Scarves are always a winner and work up pretty quickly.
God bless

A great big :ty to all who sent their well wishes as well as wonderful project ideas! They sure did get my creative sparks going! :)
Although I have heard mixed things about the alpaca yarn from the Bernat line of Naturals, I am going to make a swatch out of it and see how it turns out. If I'm not pleased w/ it for a blanket, I'll use that for a scarf and perhaps use the cashmere or bamboo that I picked up (I couldn't resist splurging on such soft yarns!) for my blanket. :)
I will definitely let you guys know how things are progressing, both with my work and my operation. Again, :ty everyone! Crochetville is such an awesome forum. I am so glad I found all of you!
Love & Best Wishes to all! :hook

Just to say I hope all goes well for you. Please let us know how things go. I think small squares which you can then join up at a later date would be practical and easy to carry with you. Good luck

What about a ripple ghan?? I learned off this one: http://home.att.net/~susanBinKC/patterns.html?ripple.html
If you know how to DC you can do it!! You will just learn DC Decrease but it is easy-peasy!
Also, my favorite scarf pattern is the One Skein Scarf from the SNB HH book! It's really simple and easy and looks amazing!
Thinking of you and praying for a speedy recovery!
